US NewspapersThe US newspaper industry is a lose oligopoly dominated by around ten chains. These chains account for over half of the 50 million circulation in the US. 14 of the top 20 newspapers are owned by the top ten chains, and 60 of the top 100. Given rising revenues in the news business (advertising is up with a slightly improved economy and the difficulties of telemarketing), we expect that more of the smaller chains and family-owned newspapers will be acquired.In general, circulations keeps falling as younger people lose the newspaper habit. But most newspapers are now local monopolies, so they can squeeze advertisers to reach their remaining readership. Many news chains have been buying up TV stations, and new FCC rules will allow them to buy more stations in the same cities where they publish.
