Kaboom! Ancient collision scarred moon to its core. Ohio State University planetary scientists have found the remains of ancient lunar impacts that may have helped create the surface feature commonly called the "man in the moon." Their study suggests that a large object hit the far side of the moon and sent a shock wave through the moon's core and all the way to the Earth-facing side. The crust recoiled -- and the moon bears the scars from that encounter even today. [Science Blog -]

NYC Fall Fashion Week: Stargazing at Michael Kors. As a separate post from the actual Michael Kors show post (since that deserves undivided attention), I thought I would provide some dish on the front-row celebrities that I observed before and during the show. First to arrive was LeAnn Rimes in a cream-colored crochet dress, in which she still managed to look a bit country bumpkin. She sat at the very end of the runway, and seemed lonely for several minutes when no one was taking her picture, but lit up when the press swarmed around her (until, of course, the bigger celebs arrived). Next to come in was Hilary Duff, well-coordinated with a white headband, scarf and pea coat. Hilary looked much more elegant and womanly than she does on camera, where she has always looked so cartoonish to me. She sat through the show with a serious face, obviously trying to prove herself. Nicole Richie did not look as sickly thin as I expected in a black crewneck top and crinkled velvet skirt, but I ...

NYC Fall Fashion Week: Michael Kors. This meandering stream of consciousness guide to Kors collection captures the essence of the 72 designs that came down dueling runways as one cohesive collection. Kors blended smart Brit, American Ivy League and a touch of the twenties for a modern reinterpretation of collegiate chic. The dueling runways (rather than having models make a u-turn in the tent) allowed viewers to get a full view of both the front and back of the designs. Rugby stripes, plaid, argyle, tweed, paisley and brocade all made a strong showing in the collection, the belts were low-waisted instead of high, and the lovely assortment of knit caps are sure to be warming every cool noggin come next autumn. -Ali []

Dear NRDC BioGems Defender, I am writing to share wonderful news of a spectacular victory for the Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia -- one of NRDC's very first BioGems! For nearly a decade, we've waged an all-out campaign to win government protection of this vast coastal temperate rainforest that is home to the Spirit Bear, a rare white-colored black bear, and other populations of endangered wildlife. Yesterday, the government of British Columbia officially announced that it will grant formal protection to more than five million acres of this irreplaceable natural treasure. Five years ago, under pressure from hundreds of thousands of BioGems Defenders and other activists, British Columbia officials and logging companies signed a groundbreaking accord with Canadian First Nations and environmental groups in which they committed to negotiating formal protections for the rainforest. When British Columbia's premier did not immediately ratify the conservation agreement at the ...

PHOTOS: Colorado Vacation. Happy New Year! The northwest is getting little snow and more rain so we paid a visit to family in Denver, Colorado. The Summit County pass is probably one of the best deals in the ski resort industry. The prices are half what they are in the Northwest and their good for multiple resorts. Even if the pass isn't a free ride, you'll still get hooked up with a discount. We hit them all - Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin), Keystone, Breckenridge and of course Vail. Orquesta Maravella. "Here's one of the best Spanish orchestras. From Catalan town named Caldes de Malavella, this orchestra still exists on our days. More than 50 years working around European scene, you can check it looking at the back cover. They recorded a lot of stuff in sixties and seventies covering international pop hits directed by Luis Ferrer, the most interesting work of their discography. Inside the zip file you can find a vinyl from 68 which includes a great cover of Soul Finger, a French classic (Love is Blue), and the winner Spanish song of '68 European Song Contest (Eurovision) titled La la la. Protecting the North American Rain Forest. BBC Environment -- Canada's province of British Columbia has announced plans to protect a huge swathe of Pacific Coast rainforest, known as the Amazon of the North. The forest is home to a rare white bear species and is the ancestral land of several indigenous Canadian tribes. The deal will save a vast area of forest for wildlife, while allowing sustainable logging in other parts. The settlement between tribes, loggers and environmentalists is being hailed as an example for other countries. The land covered by the Great Bear Rainforest is huge. At 64,000 sq-km (25,000 sq-mile), it is about twice the size of Belgium. It stretches 400km (250 miles) up the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island all the way north to Alaska. It has seen frequent disputes in recent years between the lumber industry and environmental groups. Under the new agreement, about a third of the land is being preserved completely to protect wildlife in the region, including ...

NYC Fall Fashion Week: Bill Blass. Turtlenecks and designer eyeglasses - while these trademarks of intellectual sophistication were not present on the runway, they dominated the style of the literati in attendance for the Bill Blass show. It was the crowd you would expect for Blass: sharply dressed middle-aged men and women who probably spent their twenties frequenting coffee houses. The show's concept focused on the no-nonsense, on-the-go career woman - the models walked briskly down the runway and did not pose at the end of the runway to be photographed but made a quick u-turn as though they couldn't be bothered to pause (they did not even look at the cameras as they turned). Daria and Gemma opened the show with walks that floated along the runway - conveying that while they were fast-paced, they were not frazzled nor hurried. The designs captured this concept of a woman who is serious and focused, but in a cool, calm-and-collected way. The collection consisted of outfits that ...

Why Dialogue. David Bohm wrote: "Dialogue" comes from the Greek dialogos: Logos means "the word", or in our case we would think of "the meaning of the word", and dia means "through" (not two-a dialogue can be among any number of people; even one person can have a sense of dialogue within him- or herself if the spirit of the dialogue is present). The image this derivation suggests is of a stream of meaning flowing among us and through us and between us-a flow of meaning in the whole group, out of which will emerge some new understanding, something creative. When everybody is sensitive to all the nuances going around, and not merely to what is happening in one's own mind, there forms a meaning which is shared. And in that way we can talk together coherently and think together. It is this shared meaning that is the "glue" or "cement" that holds people and societies together. Contrast this with the word "discussion", which has the same root as "percussion" and "concussion". Discussion ...

NYC Fall Fashion Week: Urban Menswear Shows. Sean John While the bare-chested, muscle-laden men were a welcome departure from the endless parade of stick-thin, waify female models, the Sean John line remained true to its straightforward, street-inspired urban look. No surprises here, not even an appearance from the Diddy himself. academiks An urban menswear line that featured an array of urban casual looks, from workshirts to t-shirt to dress shirts with loose ties, always paired with work boots. Brown and mandarin orange dominated the line. -Ali []

NYC Fall Fashion Week: Sofada. "Sofada" is derived from the Portuguese word for "naughty." And while this namesake captures Alice Dobson's concept, perhaps a term for "when naughty meets nice" would be more fitting. Dobson's designs are flirtatious, but with a sophisticated, ladylike approach. It's no wonder she cites 1940s pinup girls as inspiration. Dobson captures the pinup style expertly: outfits for proper, well-groomed women who have a sex kitten purring within them. Sensuality and naughtiness, in the form of tulle and ruffles, peak out from the bust and hemlines of slim, fitted silhouettes that flair just enough to be playful. Her success lies within her restraint - recognizing that sophisticated sensuality is about understatement, she employs the use of ribbons and frills sparingly, but effectively. Dobson even gives brocade a youthful exuberance. The styling further underlined Dobson's concept, as the models strutted down the runway with hair loosely pinned to their heads, ...

The Sahara of Snow Plusieurs développements, dont une surprise majeure, dans le dossier Weed la semaine dernière. Steelers Win. The Steelers were 7-5, then won their final four regular-season games to secure the AFC's last playoff spot. They went to Cincinnati and won a wild-card game. They won at Indianapolis, which had the league's best record. And then they handed Denver its first home loss in the AFC championship game. And now they're the first 6th seed playoff team ever to win the Super Bowl. History made. [MetaFilter]
