Richard MacManus: John Battelle, Barry Diller Conversation
Barry Diller conversation. John Battelle is speaking to Barry Diller of IAC. John asked straight off: why did you buy Ask? Barry: search box would keep evolving and more convergence through it. They "plunged" into an arrangement with Ask. If they failed and didn't gain share, that's OK - because it (Ask) has "enormous promise". Barry says a lot of things to do: gather a lot of services together that is differentiated as possible. Features are appealing - if they can market them "noisely enough" then that's a way to gain market share. They have a lot of verticals, services, which they can link up to Ask. John: Google is leader in the space and isn't losing share. What comes to mind when you think of Google? Barry: they were first ones to clean the page up - it was a kind of genius. [this is not verbatim btw]. Basically says they're a great product. John asks a question about being an "Internet Mogal". Barry talks about being "distribution agnostic". Things will come through the ...

Threadwatch 1
Threadwatch: 1yr Old Today. Threadwatch is one year old today. What started as a testbed for a new version of Drupal, and as an answer to my continuing embarrassment of not actually having a personal website to point friends to has morphed into a fun community of excellent folks interested in Search, Marketing and Tech. Thanks to the membership here, we've broken more stories, tweaked more noses and generally annoyed more Search execs than any other site i know of. Despite being a continual thorn in the side of pretty much everyone, we've gotten links and coverage from the Alexa hompage, Business Week, Guardian, Slashdot, Times, SEW, and on at least one memorable occasion, webmasterworld hehe.. Thanks to everyone who's made this such a fun thing to do! By Nick W. [Threadwatch.org - Marketing and Technology Discussed]

Twelve-Unit Grid Design
Organise your Life. With Grid-It! notepads. Via niblog.TWEN MAGAZINE WILLY FLECKHAUS, 1959 265 x 335 mm / 60 gridded sheets Notepad edition 100 copies Twelve-column modular grid One of the most notable grids ever developed for magazine layout was the one that Willy Fleckhaus devised for Twen magazine in Germany in 1959. With this unique grid he designed some superb layouts using varied content over the decade of the 1960s. The grid was a twelve-unit grid (also called a twelve-lined grid) and it was designed for a large page size - 265 x 335 mm. The small dimension of the grid only gave a column width of about 4 picas and it was probably never used; but by combining the units, Fleckhaus had the option of working in a 6, 4, 3, or 2-column typesetting. The horizontal divisions were coupled with nine divisions of the vertical space, creating a whole series of coordinates for the placement of visual matter and text units. (extracted from Allen Hurlburt, The Grid, John Wiley & Sons, ...

Surfing Culture Spreads in Alaska

LEE Associated Press Writer YAKUTAT, Alaska (AP) -- The chill of seawater mixed with glacial melt doesn't faze pro surfer Josh Mulcoy as he launches his board off a beach piled high with whole spruce logs and multihued rocks smoothed by the grinding of ice. "Right now it's not that bad," said Mulcoy, of Santa Cruz, Calif. "It probably gets worse in the winter." Mulcoy in 1992 was one of the first people to surf Alaska waves. His appearance on a cover of Surfer Magazine the following year helped establish Yakutat as the state's main surf stop...

Yahoo Releasing Blog Search. According to a Business Week article Yahoo will be releasing blog search sometime next week. Look for Yahoo! to unveil a response to Google's blog search early next week. This from Bradley Horowitz, director of tech development in the company's search group. He wouldn't provide details in advance. Details are sketchy if it will be a full blog search, or an RSS/FEED search. Steve Rubel caught a glimpse of it back in July, who knows how much as changed. By graywolf. Yes. Gimme More Saturn, More Mediaburn Please
Saturn's Moons. BBC Space -- It may have the look of a giant sponge, but this is Saturn's moon Hyperion, as pictured by the Cassini spacecraft. The US-European probe has just made a flyby of the satellite, crossing its surface at a distance of just 500km. The surface is speckled with impact craters which scientists say have been modified by some process, not yet understood, to create the strange look. Much of the interior of Hyperion is empty space, suggesting it is little more than a pile of space rubble. Researchers say they are keen to learn the nature of the dark material which seems to cover the floor of some craters. Also in Cassini's sights recently has been the moon Tethys. It is much bigger. Whereas Hyperion is just 266km across, Tethys has a diameter of 1,071km. Clearly visible in the new picture is the giant scar dubbed Ithaca Chasma. It is about 65km wide and several km deep. Cassini will return to Tethys in 2007 for another close look. Another flyby of Hyperion is not ...

(NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced plans to collaborate on a number of technology-focused research-and-development activities that will couple some of Earth's most powerful technology resources. NASA and Google have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that outlines plans for cooperation on a variety of areas, including large-scale data management, massively distributed computing, bio-info-nano convergence, and encouragement of the entrepreneurial space industry. The MOU also highlights plans for Google to develop up to one million square feet within the NASA Research Park at Moffett Field. "Our planned ...

Native American Exploration
Native American Exploration. A Native American Scoops Lewis and Clark. Moncacht-apé, a Yazoo Indian, traveled up the Missouri and to the Pacific 100 years before Lewis and Clark. He told his story to the Frenchman Le Page du Pratz, who recorded it as part of his 1758 Histoire de la Lousiane (new translations here). Thomas Jefferson owned the book, as did Meriwether Lewis. But a walk to the Pacific Ocean was no big deal for the Mississippi native--after all he had walked to Niagara Falls a few years earlier. [MetaFilter]
