Canon 30D Digital SLR Announced. Now I’m really behind the times with my Canon 10D. On February 17 Canon announced the newest model the 30D (in stores by March). It looks like a very small upgrade if you have a 20D as the CMOS sensor wasn’t even updated. New features I found interesting: Video Out with USB 2.0 (how this is integrated I have no idea) 8.2 Megapixels, 5fps The Canon EOS 30D will have a retail price of $1,399. (cheaper than the 20D) Larger 2.5 inch LCD More at the DPB and DPReview.com if you’re interested. [BrainFuel]

The Pacifics - Independent Filipino Hip-Hop crew from Chicago. The PACIFICS, an acronym for People Accumulating Creative Ideas Foregoing Ignorant Conclusions of Society, are a Filipino hip hop group hailing from the Chicago underground. Made up of MCs KP, Strike3 (aka. Mr. REXford), and Norman Rockwell, they have a smooth group rhymestyle similar to Jurrasic 5 - they bounce off of each other seamlessly and have a cohesive flow in which no MC dominates any other. Their music has a characteristic Chicago underground sound, with soul and jazz inspired samples layered on top of sparse beats and looming basslines. I first heard of the group when I was still living in Chicago around 1999 or 2000. In the time since then they've come up quite a bit, and have released several albums themselves while having tracks featured on several more. "Set It" is a classic, with smoky piano samples behind a rolling bassline. Other standouts to check out (with free MP3 downloads from their site) are ...

Broadband as Utility. Business 2.0 writes about City Telecom of Hong Kong: City Telecom [is] a Hong Kong company that offers 100 megabits per second--65 times as fast as a typical DSL connection--for just $25 a month, with no phone or cable strings attached. Ricky Wong, founder and chief executive of City Telecom, describes his company as "a broadband utility." City Telecom is already Hong Kong's second-largest residential broadband provider, despite competition from PCCW, the area's largest and oldest phone company; iCable, the dominant cable operator; and HGC Telecom, a firm backed by billionaire Li Ka-Shing. Now, in fact, those larger competitors have made it their mission to halt Wong's progress. Says Dave Burstein, editor of industry newsletter "DSL Prime," "City has inspired incumbents to sprint and catch up." In 2000, City Telecom spent $25 million to deliver residential Internet access, in part by using wireless transmitters perched on rooftops and cell-phone towers. The ...

--- A long time ago, before ipods, there were a group of cave men who, in between mammoth hunts and alien encounters, would play a primitive style of music with their primitive instruments on the street corner as glaciers drove by. Like so many young aspiring musicians of the era, they were frozen solid and locked in ice for an untold amount of time. Due to global warming (or whatever you want the reason to be) they recently found themselves thawed out with a huge sleepy sand in the eye and they all had to pee really really bad. After the shock and amazement of their new surrounding set in, they noticed that their instruments were still relatively in tune. The were taken in by the modern primates, bathed, shaved, and dressed. There was much rejoicing. --- http://www.ThePrimateFiasco.com

Spring 2006 Swimwear Trend - 50's Inspired Prints. Fifties fashion inspired many styles. We see some of 50's influence in swimwear for Spring 2006. Polka dot prints in a retro cut make this bikini a must have for this season. The Electrique Boutique carries a Polka Dot Bikini Set with a full back polka-dot bottom, a polka-dot top, and a hot pink cover up with a polka-dot belt. Also, try Pistol Panties for more pin up girl swimwear styles. A good one to try is the pink and white polka-dot structured halter top with band pants. Stars Evolve Rapidly, Violently in Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies. The discovery makes the fiery environment within a typical spiral or starburst galaxy look almost pastoral. Cornell researchers using the Spitzer Space Telescope say distant galaxies contain an inferno of very young, massive and violently evolving stars, packed together in tiny but extremely powerful cosmic globs. Beatbasement - Streaming Indie and Underground Hip Hop. Beatbasement is a streaming internet radio station playing nothing but the finest turntablism and underground hip hop around. They have a free 24kbps MP3 stream which is suprisingly good quality despite the low bitrate. They used to have a deal where for $10 a month you can subscribe to their 192kbps stream for super high quality tracks, but it looks like it's been cancelled... I actually subscribed to them for a long time and it's well worth the money, it's a great station and by subscribing you help to support it. It's got a definite Bay Area / L.A. underground slant to it (pretty sure they're based around here), but they still play tracks from around the world including Europe and Japan. If you're tired of commercial hip hop and would rather check out cuts from the likes of Souls of Mischief, Binary Star, Aesop Rock, Company Flow, KRS-ONE, Madlib, 7L & Esoteric, The Visionaries, Q-Bert, etc. then I highly recommend this ...

Get Concert Info + Music at Podhop. Podbop launched today, and for music lovers it may be the most interesting mashup we’ve seen yet. They’ve combined concert events from eventful and mashed the data up with band sites that include downloadable music. The result? search for any city in the U.S. (hopefully this will soon expand to become a worldwide service) and get results (including RSS for future events) that include all upcoming live music and links to download music supplied by the band. If the band has no music available, Podbop will show a blogdigger search for that artist along with the eventful data. Here’s the best part. Subscribe to any search (Los Angeles, CA, for example), and the MP3 files are included as enclosures in the RSS feed. The service is new and data is limited. But look for this to be a cult favorite. And if they release an API, look to see Podbop’s data mashed up with other services, too. In the meantime, I’ve subscribed to the San Francisco feed. Tags: ...

The Goof Sheds Some Weight. Unless you're reading my posts via an RSS aggregator, you've probably noticed that I made some significant changes to the site layout this weekend. I'd long been unhappy with how slowly my pages load due to the large amount of imagery, so I've eliminated much of it, and greatly reduced the size of what remains. It seems much faster to me now, hopefully, you'll agree. I'm also planning to tweak the overall palette of the site to make the text more readable, although I've tried that before without much success. Seems my choice of background lends itself primarily to Halloween-y variations of orange-on-black. Guess I'll have to dig more deeply into my dimly-remembered graphic arts education to come up with something that fails to suck. Now if I only knew how to clean up the dire state of my CSS templates without having to resort to days of tedious trial-and-error. [Eye of the Goof]
