Read/Write Web: Blogging and Culture in America and New Zealand
American influence on the blogosphere. Today I came across a very interesting article in the New Zealand Herald newspaper entitled "US power and influence warrent careful scrutiny" by columnist Barbara Sumner Burstyn. She starts off by explaining why she writes about America so much (and gets flack from her readers because of her perceived anti-American stance): "So why do it? The answer is simple: America matters. Politically, economically and culturally, the United States is the paramount world influence. Every day we, out here in the colonies, are affected by America. From the television we watch, to the runaway films our creative community must make to stay alive, to the rules that influence our food, medical and education systems and standards, to the shoes we choose to wear and the coffee many of us drink." I often wonder how much the so-called "blogosphere" is a product of American culture. This is a question, not a statement. When I look at my blogroll, I see a good variety ...

More on Joe Trippi From Betsy Devine
Joe says--it ain't so.. Big media has been happily bashing both sides of the Dean-Trippi divide. Sure, Howard Dean lost a string of primaries--but Dean must be a villain to replace Joe Trippi as his campaign director. Sure, Trippi turned Dean's campaign from a footnote into a frontpage story--but he must be a villain because his company got paid millions to place Dean's ads. Funny how Trippi's alleged greed never makes Dean less of a villain for replacing him. Funny how Dean's alleged ingratitude never makes Trippi less of a villain for getting paid for the work he did. One side of the story, at last, speaks up for himself. Joe Trippi just got his own blog, Change for America". In today's post he tells the story big media doesn't want you to hear.I recently inquired about the contract and my compensation. It turns out it was a 7% contract. Meaning that if $7 million in TV was bought 93% went to TV stations to buy the time and 7% or $490,000 was paid to the firm in which I was a ...

Dean's Statement on Wesley Clark
Dean's Statement on Wesley Clark. BURLINGTON--Governor Dean issued the following statement this afternoon, after General Clark announced that he was ending his presidential campaign: "Wes Clark ran a spirited race for the White House, and I congratulate him. His lifetime of military service has made a strong and lasting contribution to America's security. "I believe Wes Clark's supporters will take a fresh look at our campaign, because Wes Clark and I agreed that the best way to take on George W. Bush this fall is not with a Washington politician who voted to support this president's wrongheaded policies, but with an experienced leader and a grassroots campaign that can bring new people into the process and change the way Washington does business. "Wes Clark and I agreed that the most urgent national security threats are terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. Our campaign, strongly supported by senior retired military leaders, offers much to people impressed by General Clark's ...

Atom - The Echo of Nonsense
Is this Atom/Echo scam still alive??? If the format is not compatible with RSS, it's a tired power play. Haven't people learned? When Microsoft attacked Netscape and others in the 1990's, much of the promise of the internet died. Microsoft violated the Sherman Act and got control, but the company now rules a rather lackluster world. Will Google be just as foolish in the area of content syndication? I've written previously that it's probably too late to stop the RSS format. RSS is hip, popular, fashionable, and very American. In business terms, it has achieved a considerable scale. Perhaps we should just forget Google and use Yahoo. - Gary Santoro, Mediaburn.net Google, Please Don't Rend RSS Community. Google, please do the right thing. Support Atom if you want, but not at the expense of other formats. Don't be evil. [Dan Gillmor's eJournal]

Big Media Chiefs Pledge Support For Kerry
Guardian UK article on media executives supporting John Kerry for President. Politics as usual. What is even more laughable is Kerry's copying of Dean's campaign message. For the last 6 weeks, Kerry has talked about "Common Sense", Harry Truman, and fighting the special interests. These are Dean's campaign themes. It's as if Dean and Kerry were sitting next to each other in school and Kerry starting peeking at Dean's test paper. Next, Kerry will claim that he balanced the budget of Vermont! Whatever works, right Kerry? Come on - if you want to be President show us you deserve it. A real leader has his own message. - G.S.

Newspaper Chains
US NewspapersThe US newspaper industry is a lose oligopoly dominated by around ten chains. These chains account for over half of the 50 million circulation in the US. 14 of the top 20 newspapers are owned by the top ten chains, and 60 of the top 100. Given rising revenues in the news business (advertising is up with a slightly improved economy and the difficulties of telemarketing), we expect that more of the smaller chains and family-owned newspapers will be acquired. In general, circulations keeps falling as younger people lose the newspaper habit. But most newspapers are now local monopolies, so they can squeeze advertisers to reach their remaining readership. Many news chains have been buying up TV stations, and new FCC rules will allow them to buy more stations in the same cities where they publish. Update on Candidate Edward Ableser For AZ House Dist. 17
Hello Everyone, I want to update you with the latest news from my campaign. On February 3rd, a group of 15 campaign supporters spent the entire day at the polls collecting signatures, seed money, $5 contributions and passing out our new campaign flyer. As of this update, we have not only obtained, but significantly exceeded the required signatures to ensure my name is on the ballot in November 2004. Seed Money for our Campaign has been flowing in and only $300 remains for us to achieve our goal. For those that have yet to donate, if you can spare $5, $10, or $25 to help us reach our goal... that certainly would be appreciated. Remember to make checks payable to the Committee to Elect Edward Z. Ableser, and send it to: 1278 E. Pebble Beach Dr. Tempe, AZ. 85282 Moving forward we plan to canvas neighborhoods every weekend until election day. Additionally, I will be speaking to notable groups like the Tempe Kiwanis and Friendship Village in the coming weeks. I now have a Blog (Weblog) ...

This Old Video. One of the main reasons why I purchased a new G5 was to finally own a DVD burner. Not just to back up data, but to rid myself of the various VHS tapes I have been hauling around from various college dorms and apartments. Most were taped anywhere from 1985 to 1992, and since ripping the tape gun across the top over ten years ago I haven't watched any of them. I always had a feeling I would someday want them, or that technology would eventually get to a place where I could create a permanent digital copy of their content. And now, fifteen years later, I finally have the setup to do just that. So with my VCR plugged into an analog / digital converter box and a firewire cable running to my G5, last night I launched iMovie, cracked open a box, and started hunting. The first video I pulled was taped just a couple of months into my freshman year at college -- nearly 15 years ago. I pressed play, and was confronted with the yelps, laughter, and smiling faces of dorm-mates I ...

Re: The Fab Four and Expressionist Fab Culture
There's a TV show pushing a "Fab 5" catch-phrase. I'm not buying it. The Beatles came to the U.S. 40 years ago. That was a genuinely fabulous combo. Can't we get it right in 2004? The Fab 5? Spare me. I realize it's a light hearted catch-phrase, but I'm a serious kind of guy. Who's running the big media? I'm sick of this. Give me something good. The "Fab 5" are not EFC according to Mediaburn. The Beatles movie A Hard Day's Night (1964) does qualify. Totally.

Notes on Radio Userland
Publishing a second weblog as a Radio category. I've been experimenting with the use of RSS to publish Web content: Writing entries in Radio UserLand that are stored in an RSS-only category, using a cronjob to retrieve that RSS data every five minutes, making a few search-and-replace changes to the RSS with Perl, turning the data into an HTML file using wget and PHP, then including the file on a Web page. Radio makes it easy to route entries to several categories that are published on another site. The entries also can be collected in an additional category for an RSS feed. The process works, but I ran into three familiar obstacles with Radio's category support: Radio assumes that a category's RSS feed isn't being published elsewhere. The feed's link element has a category URL, which would send aggregator users to Workbench instead of the desired destination. Category feeds preface the feed's title element with a Radio user name ("Rogers Cadenhead: Drudge Retort" instead of "Drudge ...
