Mediaburn DVD Recommendation. Waving the Nuclear Sword. George Monbiot writes: In nuclear politics, every action is justified by the response it provokes. The US explains its missile defence programme by claiming that other states are developing new weapons systems, which one day it might need to shoot down. In response, Russia has activated a new weapons system, the Topol-M, designed to "penetrate US anti-missile defences". Israel, citing the threat from Iran, insists on retaining its nuclear missiles. Threatened by them (and prompted, among other reasons, by his anti-semitism), the Iranian president says he wants to wipe Israel off the map, and appears to be developing a means to do so. Israel sees his response as vindicating its nuclear programme. It threatens an air strike, which grants retrospective validity to Ahmadinejad's designs. And so it goes on. ... So, without any proper public debate on either side of the Atlantic, both nations (the U.S. and U.K.) might have begun ...

Sounds of Star Death Near Middle C. Scientists have made the astonishing discovery that sound might drive supernovae explosions. Their computer simulations say that dying stars pulse at audible frequencies -- for instance, at about the F-note above middle C -- for a split second before they blow up. [Physics Org]

Huashan. We climbed Huashan, one of China's five sacred mountains (sacred to Daoism). We began at midnight and climbed in the dark and arrived at the summit at about 5:40. We waited about an hour in the cold until we saw the first glimmer of sun. By gabrielwildau(at)gmail.com. [Gabe in China]

Perspectives of Russian Art. Perspectives of Russian Art Prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 Americans had limited opportunities to view Russian art of the 20th century. The political pressures of the Cold War era resulted in the mutual cultural isolation of Russia from western Europe and the United States that also created an atmosphere of aesthetic mystery regarding Russian art . . Interview with a Vampire. John Galliano decided that blood, skeletons, whips and chains are long overdo in the world of haute couture. His collection for Dior was dramatic, magical and bordered on scary/sexy. The Dior show opened 3 days of haute couture fashion here in Paris. The models looked as if they were apparitions straight out of a surrealistic French Revolution. Their hair was bleached white, dark rims painted around their eyes and the color red was absolutely EVERYWHERE. My favorite piece (and a crowd pleaser) was an ecru dress with a huge tulle skirt with the slogan prominently displayed: “liberte, egalite and fraternite.” Security was ultra tight for this show, but being a student has its privleges. I will be catching the Dominique Sirop show later today and the Franck Sorbier show on Wednesday. The season has started. - Meryl []

Decision2006. Online election results will be available after the polls close in British Columbia at 7pm PST. Bloggers have been warned not to post early results from the east before the polls close in British Columbia. CBC explains. It appears that US-hosted websites ProAlberta and Captain's Quarters will be wilfully violating the Canada Elections Act and posting early results. Andew Coyne has suggested that posters to his website "[pretend] to report the results from some election in a foreign or imaginary land." Paul Bryan was fined $1000 for posting early results from the 2000 election and is currently appealing to the Supreme Court. Previously discussed here and here. [MetaFilter]

The focus will be on you with this warm white dress. The Halter straps will give an illusion of broader shoulders and the gathered fabric on the sides of the waist will slim down your core. This will give you a sexy hourglass figure. Wear a bustier underneath for a smooth silhouette and a fuller bust without any bra strap visibility. Accessorize with a pair of sparkling silver stilettos and a matching clutch. [Grooveeffect - An Urban Style, Music, and Events Guide]

Appeal. Peter Gabriel's Appeal A Digital Download of 2 MP3 format tracks (256kbs) to raise money for the South Asia Earthquake Appeal. The massive earthquake which devastated Kashmir, Pakistan and northern India last year has claimed tens of thousands of lives already. But with winter biteing hard, there are fears that the death toll could rise yet further This is a request for help. We've had ties with Pakistan for many years, particularly with Qawwali music and the extraordinary voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. His family have generously agreed to allow us to make available two tracks - one a collaboration with Massive Attack , 'Mustt Mustt' and one with myself 'Taboo', as a download to raise money. So basically you are getting two extraordinary pieces of music for the price of one! We need a lot of downloads and we need you to do a bit of marketing for us. So, if you could persuade say 10 of your friends to do the same download we can get real money to real people really fast. ...

String Theory and Intelligent Design. Physicists are not like ordinary people, and string theorists are not like ordinary physicists. Even compared with their peers, crafters of the arcane model of reality that is string theory think in terms of sweeping explanations of nature"s design.from the International Herald Tribune story: Leonard Susskind, a founder of the theory and one of its leading practitioners, brazenly lays out this no-boundaries attitude on the first page of his new book. His research, he declares, "touches not only on current paradigm shifts in physics and cosmology, but also on the profound cultural questions that are rocking our social and political landscape: can science explain the extraordinary fact that the universe appears to be uncannily, nay, spectacularly, well designed for our own existence?" What troubles Susskind is an intelligent design argument considerably more vexing than the anti-evolution grumblings recently on trial in Dover, Pennsylvania. ...

VIDEO: Big Snow, Little Movie. We apologize for the delay in video releases, but Mother Nature has been pounding the Cascade Mountains with wind and rain for weeks. The good news is that the wait is over and we were rewarded with an epic powder day. With over 2 feet of new snow in 48 hours, Crystal Mountain offers terrain that rivals any resort in the world. We got fresh lines all day long by making laps around the upper mountain, and it was snowing so much that our tracks were filling in every hour. The best run was by far Exterminator, a double-black diamond back to the frontside that is accessible via a small hike up from Iceberg's Ridge. Stay tuned for upcoming videos from Vail/Breckenridge, SIA.06 SnowSports Trade Show in Vegas, Winter X Games in Aspen and The Legendary Mt. Baker Banked Slalom. By Ridertech.com. (Now Podcasting Franz Bielmeier, Ente + Sally MP3) A Punk Legend Returns. Franz Bielmeier, also known as Mary Lou Monroe, was the founding member of Düsseldorf's great punk band Charley's Girls, who then evolved into Mittagspause. Remember the Ratinger Hof? Later, he set up the famous Rondo record label and wrote and recorded beautiful songs for his new band, Aqua Velva. After some private trouble he vanished, only to resurface again for the interviews published in Jürgen Teipel's book about the history of German punk rock, Verschwende deine Jugend; then he disappeared again. And now he's back. Franz has started recording again, and it's FAB. He gave permission to publish four of his new songs exclusively right here at The Cartoonist. With the exception of Dub, all those songs are part of his Schwester Strahl (Sister Ray) project. Be prepared for some fabulous noise: Baby Yo [MP3, 2.7MB]Ente + Sally [MP3, 4.3MB]Dub [MP3, 3.7MB]Unfall [MP3, 8.4MB] Franz Bielmeier is now looking for ...

LONDON - Benjamin Franklin, Londoner. The U.S. founding father lived in the British capital for almost two decades before the American Revolution, working to bridge the widening gap between the colonies and the crown. After decades of neglect and a $5.3 million restoration, his house was unveiled to the public Tuesday as a museum dedicated to a revolutionary who spent years trying to keep Britain and its American colonies united.
