D-Tower
Interactive mood survey. D-Tower, built in Doetinchem, The Netherlands, is a sculpture where the intensive (feelings, qualia) and the extensive (space, quantities) exchange roles, where human action, color, money, value, feelings all become networked entities. Designed by NOX Architects, the tower is connected to a website in two different ways. 1. The website is a visualization of the responses of the 45,000 inhabitants of Doetinchem to a questionnaire which deals with emotions like Hate, Love, Happiness and Fear. 2. The four emotions are represented by four colours: Green, Red, Blue and Yellow, which are also the colors of the lamps illuminating the building. If there was a lot of happiness in the city on day 1, the tower will turn blue. In a capsule placed underneath the Tower inhabitants of Doetinchem can also place personal messages on the emotional "Landscapes". [bTang reBlog]

Make Your Own From Backstage.com
The do-it-yourself film. How to Make Your Own Indie Film. Backstage.com is running a feature story on Creating Indie Cinema. The Guide to Making Low-Budget Films is a great intro into the world of making movies: "The rationales for making films are manifold: an undying passion to tell a particular story, a chance at making millions of dollars, or the hope of creating a 'calling card' flick which will result in more work. An actor unhappy with the roles he's been getting (or not getting) might decide to take his career into his own hands by producing a vehicle for himself. A writer unable to sell her screenplays (or tired of seeing her work destroyed by others) may finally direct her own project." … [Hacking NetFlix] [Cinema Minima]

Advertising and RSS
News: Overture Testing Ads Rolled Into RSS. This came across my desk tonight from a trusted source, and I checked it out, and it seems to be real: Overture is testing RSS ads in limited release, on small(er) feeds like this one from the MobileTracker blog. MobileTracker notes the news in this posting: If you’re an RSS feed subscriber you have probably noticed that the feed is now full text. That means you can read via RSS whatever you would normally see on the main MobileTracker page. If we add more content “after the jump” (like photos, which is often the case), you’ll need to click through to see it. You’ll also notice on the RSS feed that there are now advertisements. These are content targeted ads which means they should relate to the topic of the article. The ads are provided by Overture and powered by FeedBurner. We’re proud to work with both companies. Here's what the ads look like. This is what I've been on about for some time now - the inclusion of a major ad network play ...

Robin Guthrie
Robin Guthrie - Lumiere. Scott and I went and saw Robin Guthrie, of the Cocteau Twins, perform a live sountrack to his 40 minute film Lumiere on Monday night at the Magic Bag in Ferndale, MI. "Lumiere is a 40 minute long animated film created as a backdrop to a sublime collection of sensual and atmospheric, guitar only, instrumentals of truly hypnotic beauty performed live by Robin Guthrie. As the founder member of the seminal Cocteau Twins, Robin Guthrie has created some of the most beautiful music of recent times and is widely regarded as a musical visionary. The distinctive sonic landscapes that have become his trademark are again on display throughout the Lumiere performance and at time touches upon his, thus far, only instrumental album Imperial and his legions of admirers will find much that they recognize and love. Yet what marks this performance out from his recorded work is the spaciousness of the music. Robin employs an astonishingly down-tempo pace throughout the ...

Shanghai
Booming City, Slow Net. I've stayed in two Shanghai hotels on this trip. Both promised broadband Internet connections. Neither has come close to consistently living up to the promise. The economy here is growing like topsy, but even China's most up-to-date city continues to lag in this area. There is a saving grace, however. China offers dial-up access that is basically free. For the cost of a local call I can log onto a major telecom ISP and tunnel out with my VPN software. It's slow but at least it works. [Dan Gillmor's eJournal]

'Inside Digital Media'
"Inside Digital Media" Now Available as MP3. Phil Leigh’s near-daily Webcast program ”Inside Digital Media” has become a portable product. Previously available only as a computer stream, produced in cooperation with show sponsor RealNetworks, the 30-minute episodes can now be downloaded as MP3s with no DRM, transferred to a portable player, or burned to CD. Phil’s guests have included every major personality in the digital music space. (Not to compare myself to such luminaries, but I have enjoyed several appearances on the show, most recently here.) MyFi Notes
XM Radio Portable Device Seeks to Upset Apple Cart. XM satellite radio has released MyFi, a completely portable version of the service which, until now, was marketed for cars and the stay-at-home market in a cariet of formats. [Correction made; thanks to comment.] MyFi is designed to compete with iPods and other MP3 portables. To cast the battle in larger terms, MyFi competes with downloading, ripping/burning, local storage of files—the major artifacts of the digital music revolution. ”For people who want to aggressively find, download and own music and spend a lot of time doing that, iPods, Rios and the others are interesting devices to them,” said XM Chief Executive Hugh Panero. “Ours is more of a mass-market product for people who want to drink from the fountain of entertainment … rather than spend all that time searching and downloading,” he said. The outlook seems dubious, especially considering the economics of adoption. The device costs 350 dollars, then users must pay 10 ...
