future energy production
Think solar not nuclear for the energy of the future, say UK scientists. Solar rather than nuclear energy should be the UK government's priority in planning future energy production, according to scientists writing this week in the journal Nature Materials. [Physics Org]

Citrus Varieties
Chip helps growers with citrus varieties. Researchers have designed a computer chiphat can improve citrus varieties and suggest ways to better manage them. By helping determine which genes are turned on in a tissue of citrus -- genes that are associated with taste, acidic content and disease, for example, the chip provides information useful to researchers for rectifying existing problems and making improvements to the fruit. From Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano
Dear Friend: I am pleased to let you know that I have officially filed for re-election as Governor. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve you and our great state over the course of the last three years, and I am eager to begin the campaign for the next four. Together, we have made great progress in Arizona. We balanced the budget, moving from a $1.3 billion deficit in 2002 to a $1 billion surplus in 2006. We have renewed our schools by implementing voluntary full-day kindergarten and we have strengthened our state's economy by growing local jobs and investing in long-term projects that will bring even more in the future. We have addressed the issue of illegal immigration head-on and we have stood up for seniors, veterans and for the health of all our citizens. My friends, we have come a long way and we can go even further still. We will continue to manage our finances responsibly, invest in the future of our children, grow our economy and address illegal immigration. We ...

Look
Look Updated. The March issue of Look and Papierdoll is online. <shill> The photo above is from the March issue of Look. Photographer Carey Denniston took a couple of shots in the place I love, Brooklyn. Oh sure, Manhattanites and out-of-towners will question, what (if anything) is outside of Manhattan? We (and Carey Denniston) say a whole world. While I think the cheesecake at Junior’s is overrated, it beats anything you can get in “the city”. There’s also Coney Island in the summer (watch the glass), BAM, the Promenade (for the lover in you), DUMBO (the area, not the elephant) and a million and one things I can’t remember because it’s sooo early in the morning and I haven’t gotten my coffee while I blog in my pajamas (took the day off). PS: We must have really gone on a Project Runway tear at Papierdoll, we have a photo/audio interview with Zulema Griffin and our interview of the month is with Jay McCarroll. Stop reading and go there now. </shill> []

March 1, 2006 - Jazz is Hip
The Hippest Sounds on Earth. John Coltrane. Thelonious Monk. Hank Mobley. Lennie Tristano. Blue Note. Impulse. Riverside... In other words: jazz. Now three fans in Japan -- a country that has always appreciated America's gift to music even more than the US itself -- have created The Jazz Discography Project, a bare-bones, open-source, astonishingly exhaustive database of the hippest sounds on the planet. For aficionados, just reading an ASCII entry for long out-of-print stuff like A Message from Garcia, featuring a young and then-unknown musician named Bill Evans who would later reinvent his instrument, is thrilling. Ahmad Jamal
Ahmad Jamal - Seeds Of Greatness. First Sessions From The Ahmad Jamal Trio Selections from: The Legendary Okeh & Epic Recordings (Epic). I dont think there is anyone these days who denies the incredible talent and decades-long artistic contribution of Ahmad Jamal. But when he was starting out with his trio in the early 1950’s, he wasn’t getting a lot of respect from the jazzoids out there. He was often labeled a lightweight; Nat Hentoff once commented that Jamal was nothing but a lounge pianist. Jamal did not overwhelm you with a wild-rollercoaster wave of notes in his solos. His method was more geared to dynamics and phrasing. The style was understated, which was often mistaken for a lack of skill. And his band didn’t even have a drummer. The only other artist with a similar trio setup was Nat Cole. But there were a handful of people who totally got what Jamal was about. John Hammond, the legendary producer and talent scout (who discovered Billie Holiday, Bennie Goodman, Count ...

* Eye of the Goof on New URL *
One Eye Closes.... After many days of file uploading, template tweaking, squinting at hard-to-read CSS tutorials, and just slumping in front of my computer in a glazed torpor, I'm pleased to announce that Eye of the Goof: Mark II is now open for your browsing pleasure. Please change your bookmarks, blogrolls, and RSS feeds accordingly. The Elder Goof will remain open for the time being, but I plan to remove much of the content over the next few months, so if you have links you don't want broken, I'd strongly urge you to redirect them to my new domain at your earliest convenience. So long, reality, and thanks for the free lunch! [Eye of the Goof]

Edgeio
Edgeio Launches. After much anticipation and a period of being available to a private audience the team at Edgeio took the covers off of their creation tonight and launched to the general public. Edgeio takes listings (classifieds) from RSS-enabled sources and organizes them in a central location for users to be able to browse and search. The Edgeio ethos is that content belongs on the edges, and that is where the name originates from (Edge input/output). Content on the edges means the content on the millions of blogs and other sites out there which Edgeio does a good job of aggregating and organizing. From a seller’s perspective, to post an item you write about it on your blog and tag it ‘listing’ (along with any other keywords which are suitable to categorize the item for sale). Edgeio taps into the blog cloud via weblogs.com and other ping services (as well as its own ping server which is at http://www.edgeio.com/RPC2) to find new posts that have been tagged for listing. Once it ...

TRANSIT by Jazz / World Composer Jon Gagan
Jon Gagan's Transit is a synthesis of timeless jazz and world sounds. Jon's artistry as a bassist and composer really shines on this cool voyage through 13 tunes. It's the phrasing that stands out here...the groups of notes and Gagan's groove. Transit is available for download for only $10.00 at: http://www.ssri.biz/index.php?c=41 Individual tracks can also be purchased for $1.00 each. If you want a few choice bits, Mediaburn recommends buying "Point B," "Desert Return," and "Blues at Dawn." Want a couple more??? Then download "Linguo-", which has a very nice bridge, and "Mali," for more phraseology - hot and cool. Go ahead right on. Support a phenomenon. - Gary Santoro

Col Hans Christern, in charge of training Tiger crews, realised that a manual written by soldiers might be an easier read than the dull booklets authored by the manufacturers. Via Coudal. The Sounds We Hear
Scientists Show How Brain Processes Sound. Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University have discovered that our ears use the most efficient way to process the sounds we hear, from babbling brooks to wailing babies. These results represent a significant advance in understanding how sound is encoded for transmission to the brain, according to the authors, whose work is published with an accompanying "News and Views" editorial in the Feb. 23 issue of Nature. Original Champ Jerry Cole
Flip Your Id! It's Astro Sounds from Beyond the Year 2000!. From Inner Sounds to Astro Sounds Session guitarist Jerry Cole made several albums of instrumental surf rock as the leader of Jerry Cole & His Spacemen, but after playing on sessions that produced the Byrds' Mr. Tambourine Man and the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album, he realized he had to adapt to new musical trends. In the summer of '66, Cole responded by bringing several session buddies together to record The Inner Sounds of the Id, a psychedelic studio creation that was at least a year ahead of its time. The story might have ended there if the producer hadn't stolen the Id's session outtakes... (more inside) [MetaFilter]

The Adoption of RSS 2.0 on Mediaburn
Why formats like RSS 2.0 work. The roadmap of the RSS 2.0 spec, a piece of text that I thought about for years, but actually wrote in just a few minutes, has been the key to keeping RSS a stable platform for people to build on. There have always been people who feel that the roadmap should be broken, but it hasn't been broken, and it won't be, because now there's a huge community that has invested billions of dollars around its assumptions. The roadmap actually encourages risk, but some people always seem to want to have their ideas accepted without taking the risk. They think they can make something better than RSS and shouldn't have to go through the same vetting process that RSS itself went through. Now, it may be possible that after three years in the market, that RSS 2.0 could be radically improved, but the roadmap says that no person or group of people has the exclusive right to improve it, and that no one can interfere with the stability of the platform. That's no different ...
