It's a face-off of massive proportions, the sausage event of the century - sixthseal.com is proud to bring to you: Plumrose Premium Giant Hotdogs vs. Ye Olde Oak American Style Hot Dogs. It's an evaluation between the two different brands of canned hot dogs (sausages) in brine. I hate this stuff. :p This is the first contender - Plumrose Premium Giant Hotdogs (RM 9.95) a tall and sturdy built cylindrical shaped can containing 6 (six) "Premium Giant Hotdog" (it's not really that big, to be honest). ;) Plumrose Premium Giant Hotdogs has an image of a football player at the back to emphasize the Americana in the product. It's made primarily of turkey (mechanically recovered turkey, that is, which isn't exactly people per se, but it's turkey parts) and comes with a serving suggestion of a conventional hot dog (in a bun). The second contender is the Ye Olde Oak American Style Hot Dogs (RM 7.80) a conventional can also holding 6 (six) "American Style Hot Dogs" in the can. These are the ...

Pizza Hut came out with another new pizza in commemoration of the Muslim celebration with the Mystical Moroccan Pizza. The Mystical Moroccan Pizza is a unique square pizza (instead of the usual round ones) that comes with the tagline - Discover the Exotic Flavors of Morocco. The Mystical Moroccan Pizza comes with a similarly themed Pizza Hut "spinner" game which is now standard with all new promotional pizzas. The spinner games give the patrons who order the promotional pizza incentives in the form of free food and drink, depending on the luck of the spin. This one is called The Mystical Spin and plays on the square shape of the pizza. The two spinners are called the "Destination Spinner" and "Number Spinner" and the first one directs the player into one of the four quadrants which depicts holy sites in the Islam faith. The prime prize is always another promotional pizza. I got the Breadstix and asked to change that to a Pepsi instead (coz I was thirsty). There is also an option ...

I was trawling through the aisles of our local supermarket today when I noticed this brightly packaged cereal to commemorate the opening of the Hong Kong Disneyland through a licensing deal with Disney. I'm not a big cereal eater (though I'm a big fan of cereal, if that makes sense) and the particular words that caught my eye is the "WOW! The milk turns PINK!" bit. Intrigued (well, not intrigued per se, but something like that), I purchased the RM 7.90 box of Kellogg's Disney Mickey's Magix cereal which is a toasted oat cereal with marshmallows. It's made in South Korea. WOW! The milk turns Pink! Sorry, I just wanted to say it again. :p Anyway, the cereal comes with marshmallow bits of different colors and the vaguely star shaped cereal is an oat based grain with specks of raspberry coloring, which is what gives it the Wow-the-milk-turns-pink property. I added some milk to the cereal and it actually tastes pretty good. There's just enough marshmallows bobbing around, they ...

KFC just came out with a new Mexican themed wrap called the Bandito Pockett with Pineapple Salsa Sauce. It features a lot of cultural themed advertisements that Hispanics would probably find offensive due to the heavily stereotyped distillation of their culture. It's a good thing we don't have a large Hispanic population over here. ;) The KFC Bandito Pockett Pineapple Salsa Sauce is unusual in the promotional arena due to the emphasis on action oriented lifestyle concepts that is so predominant in this ad campaign. There is a distinctively "macho" feel to the promotional material which comes with taglines like "Flex your muscles to the people inside". The taglines range from vaguely interesting and chuckle inducing to the overboard trying-too-hard-to-be-funny promotional cardboard place cards. There are Bandito Pockett promotional banners lining the top of the KFC franchise with the phrase "Jump and touch this", which toes the line between cheesy humor and plain unfunny but the ...

I went to Luconia Cafe last night to meet up with Valerine to get my tickets to go back to Sibu tonight. Luconia Cafe is a local watering hole near my place (shit, I probably shouldn't be revealing so many details :p) and it's a great place to have a couple of drinks. Luconia Cafe only serves alcoholic beverages (although they do have some non-alcoholic drinks as well) and the food is subbed to the next door cafe - Thyme's, which I've reviewed in a previous post on sixthseal.com. The interior of Luconia Cafe mainly consists of leather chill out chairs with pull over seats and I went there at about 8 pm last night. Irene [blogspot.com] called me up and asked where I was and she came over with Tiffany [blogspot.com]. Valerine and her friends Ivy (also from Sibu!) and Monica also came in soon after that. I had Sex on the Luconia (RM 18) a cocktail derived from Sex on the Beach with a strong hint of Malibu (the coconut liquor). I met Daphne with her friends there too and I tried to ...

bla bla bla... restaurant is a relatively new eating establishment that opened up in Kuching. It has a purplish pink neon sign with a speech bubble around the restaurant's name. It looks like a small place but it's actually 180 meters inside! The interesting bit about bla bla bla restaurant is that there is a water walkway/bridge with "stepping stones" which you have to pass through in order to enter the restaurant. It kinda screens the patrons a bit, coz you have to be at least reasonably sober to navigate through, ya know. ;) The square block bridge is also where the eating establishment branches into the upstairs dining area or the al fresco seating areas to the back. There are goldfish swimming around in the flowing water if you look close enough. Bla bla bla restaurant has a great ambience with the water features and other well placed decors like this great platter of fresh produce... There is a futon mound where you can relax and have a couple of drinks coz you can get ...

MC3 is the latest club that opened up in Kuching in the new Travillion mall at Padungan. It's located above Zen and it seems to be the most popular place to go clubbing in Kuching. I went to MC3 three nights in a row (it's named MC 3, after all). ;) The place has a nice decor and a great sound system (love the bass) with more lasers and other light displays than you can shake a stick at. The place had a great turnout on Friday night and it was absolutely packed on Saturday night. The Halloween Party last night (Sunday night) was mostly comprised of regulars coz it's a Sunday night after all. I can't believe I went there three nights in a row, I was actually pretty fucked by the second night (due to the comedown) but I went again the next night and last night. Jesus... MC3 club plays a variety of dance music but I love the hard trance they were putting on for the Halloween Party last night. The bass was so strong; I could feel the air inside balloons reverberating to the beat, ...

Ketamine is a drug that I've used on numerous occasions but never have really written a trip report about since I consider it a "regular use" drug. However, I do have various trip reports (personal) and videos shot while I was snorting or injecting ketamine and I decided it was high time (no pun intended) to put up the latest one. ;) I have obtained 2 grams of ketamine crystals earlier this week and decided to go for an introspective k-hole trip by insufflating the entire packet of ketamine (which cost me RM 450 - k is not cheap over here). This is the best batch of ketamine (in powder form) I've ever had the pleasure of sampling, though I've had access to liquid pharmaceutical ketamine for IM injections before. The majority of ketamine users insufflate (snort) the crystals instead of using a syringe to IM the liquid form of ketamine and despite certain preconceptions, it IS possible to k-hole by insufflating ketamine crystals of suitable purity if it's done in excessive amounts ...

The Guinness (or any other brand of stout) Shake (or Float) is a delicious concoction made with stout (the dark beer) and ice cream. It's preferable to use vanilla ice-cream in this recipe as a flavored ice cream adds an undesirable taste to the resulting drink, though experimentation is encouraged. There are various recipes for making a Guinness Stout Shake and this one is a quick and dirty method of banging out a fast one within minutes with ingredients that are readily available in your kitchen (that is, if you keep beer in your fridge). ;) 1. Stout (the dark beer) Guinness Stout is my preferred stout of choice but Panther Superior Strength Extra Super Stout is a hyperbolic, but acceptable substitute as well. It's cheaper than Guinness and I love the brewery's name - Bali Hai. Heh! 2. Ice cream (vanilla) It's always a good idea to use premium ice cream (with an appropriately high fat content and a correlating rich texture) instead of quasi ice cream, but sometimes, we just have ...

I noticed a Frisbee shaped product in the adidas store last time I went in and was intrigued by the packaging. It's an Ultimate Frisbee regulation disc (175 grams) and it retails for RM 19.90. I don't play Ultimate Frisbee, though I've heard of it, but long time readers of sixthseal.com would know that I'm an easy sell, especially when it comes with nifty packaging, so I got one (though for what purpose, I couldn't ascertain at the time of purchase). ;) The Ultimate Frisbee regulation disc weighs 175 grams and comes enclosed in a black adidas cardboard enclosure. It's a relatively light flying disc that has matte black coating and the adidas logo prominently displayed on the front of the disc. There are printed rules and regulations about the Ultimate Frisbee game ("rumored to be a non-contact sport") and it sounds interesting enough, but considering I don't play Ultimate Frisbee and don't even know why I got it in the first place - a (timely) revelation came to me last night and ...

Colgate just came out with a new line of toothpaste called Colgate Propolis. The packaging comes with imagery of bees and pollen. Propolis is the term used to describe "bees wax" - the resin building block used by bees to reinforce their distinctive comb textured hives. The tube that comes out of the Colgate Propolis toothpaste box looks like regular Colgate, except with the new Propolis ingredients. The toothpaste is promoted as a golden gel and it doesn't come with any literature suggesting benefits to the teeth and gums (if any). The Colgate Propolis toothpaste is actually a golden gel colored substance! It doesn't foam much when used to brush the teeth and it leaves a distinctive honey like aftertaste, which I found weird in the beginning, but it kinda grows on you, really... It's a change from my regular toothpaste anyway. ;)

This vivid purple yam is a tuber plant has a rough and dark colored exterior and a purple interior. It's requires proper cooking (like most wild yams) to detoxify the plant and make it edible, but other than that macabre bit of information, it tastes really good - fibrous and starchy texture, with a slightly sweet aftertaste. I'm told that people used to eat this to supplement their diet during the famine but personally, it tastes alright to me. :)

Country Cafe Music Restaurant is an old high school hangout that will always have a place in my heart. I used to go there with my buddies when I was in Form Five and just hang out and try the ever-changing huge menu that they had. It was nostalgic... I brought my girlfriend there last night and the familiar interior greeted me, bringing back a rush of high school memories. Unfortunately, although the interior looks pretty much the same (with some renovations) the menu wasn't...the place has undergone new management and the menu that has us spoilt for choice has been trimmed down into less than a couple of items... I ordered a wine cooler (had another one later during the meal to toast the old memories of Country Cafe where the emphasis was on food instead of a football (soccer) hangout) and my gf opted for 7-Up. This is what I had for dinner - its beef chop. There really isn't much choice on the menu, unlike the previous management where sashimi, tempura, cold noodles etc were ...

My mother-in-law to be had her birthday dinner at Sheraton Restaurant in Sibu on Saturday night. Sheraton Restaurant is an eatery that's been around Sibu in one form or another - they recently moved into their own building due to the high customer demand. The birthday dinner was a family event with about 10 people for a dinner gathering. Sheraton has a nice and subtle interior (which is a nice change from their previous occupancy). The restaurant is almost always packed - it's famous for their fish head curry. This is what we had for dinner: The cup overfloweth (with cucumber juice) This is a Foochow tradition where whole eggs are boiled and then deep fried before being cooked in chicken soup. It's a must have for birthdays (for Foochows anyway). There was also a thin noodle dish (not quite rice vermicelli) that's served at the same time as the egg dish. Here's a closer look at the deep-fried boiled eggs soup dish and the noodles dish. The next course is deep fried Chinese ...

I booked a ticket to come back to Sibu for the weekend (arriving Saturday night, leaving early tomorrow morning - Monday) just to attend to two birthday celebrations. The flight I was due to be on was 2:50 pm from Kuching to Sibu...and close to the departure time, the dreaded R-word came over the PA - it has been retimed. The ground crew distributed refreshment vouchers (which entitles you to a meal and a drink) at the airport restaurant (canteen would be a better description). It seems that the airport restaurant has new management and most of the major reconstruction at Kuching airport has forced it into a little nook by the side of the second floor. I wanted a sandwich but the sandwiches were all sold out so I settled for some fried rice and a 100 Plus drink (it's an isotonic rehydration drink that's very popular amongst drug users in Malaysia). The flight has been retimed to 4 pm and then to 4:40 pm and I feared that this would be a repeat of my previous business trip to KL ...

bed is the latest clubbing district in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. It is located at the waterfront and shares its block with other illustrious clubs and pubs like Nam Kwai Fong (a Cantopop feng tau joint) and Cock and Bull (a pub with draft beer that has a high expatriate and traveler audience). The flagship of this new nightlife neighborhood is the recently built bed club. The bright neon sign of this simple, yet elegant name is emblazoned across the building which houses the club. bed is a large club with multiple floors and areas and it impressed me that KK has this sort of facility. We went to bed (the club, not the act) on Saturday night to cap off our Kota Kinabalu trip with a visit to the entertainment facilities that the place has to offer. The bouncer at the door opened the door for us and we were instantly greeted by a huge dance floor located in the middle of the club. bed has state of the art sound systems and light displays. The VIP room is appropriately named the "bed ...

There is a popular seafood center in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah which serves a lot of live seafood. It's notable due to the way the live seafood offerings is presented - the customer is presented with a huge array of see-through aquariums that hosts a variety of (still alive) marine life from green lobsters to huge oysters and a lot of swimming fish in the middle. We decided to go for something a little unorthodox - frogs. It tickled me to no end to see large frogs jumping around a container for the benefit of the customer. I choose three large frogs to be cooked. Poor frogs. ;) The proprietor of the stall also recommended their eel. The eels were swimming around lazily in their aquarium and the eels are rather long, sinewy characters which looks rather like snakes with water as their habitat instead of land. I also chose an eel for our consumption. Poor eel. ;) There were also local oysters on display, which were flat, solid looking objects. I also choose a couple for our table but the ...

Gardenia Cola seems to be the leading coke (the drink) manufacturer in Sabah. This is interesting coz the other states seem to be dominated by the #1 cola based drink producer - Coca Cola. Gardenia Cola dominates the carbonated drinks shelves of hypermarkets and convenience stores like 7-11. I even saw several vending machines dispending Gardenia Cola and other Gardenia flavored canned beverages. Gardenia is best known for its bakery products and is a major producer of bread related goods in Peninsula Malaysia. Gardenia Cola is made by Gardenia Beverages in Kota Kinabalu, Sahab. Coca-cola (coke) is still the major brand of cola drinks in Malaysia though, except in Sabah. I could not resist addressing this cultural glitch and inserted RM 1.30 in coins into the Gardenia vending machine and purchased a Gardenia Cola drink. The distinctive red can of Gardenia cola dropped down into the holding cell of the vending machine, still cold from the internal cooling system. Here's a closer ...

The flight from Kuching to Kota Kinabalu took about an hour and half. Kota Kinabalu International Airport is breathtaking when the plane starts its landing sequence - it goes over the magnificent islands and austere seas and it almost seems like the plane is going to land into the sea... ...but it touched down perfectly on the runaway built right beside the open seas. It certainly is a novel experience... We took a taxi into KK and after walking around a bit, decided to check into Promenade Hotel Apartments at Api Api Center. Api-Api is the word the locals call Kota Kinabalu...interesting snippet here. Promenade Hotel Apartments is located in a nook of Api-Api Center right in the middle of Kota Kinabalu - it's all to easy to miss the place if not for the plethora of signs advertising the low rates of RM 68++ per night. Our hotel room is situated a little down from the actual reception block. This modular hotel apartment design is unique - we had to walk one block down and take a ...

I'll be flying to KK early tomorrow morning to scale Mt. Kinabalu (the highest mountain in South East Asia) with a couple of buddies. It's not a business trip; it's an impromptu decision to take a break from work (everybody needs a little time away, or so I hear ;)) so I applied for leave to go to Sabah. It's a pretty good price - RM 378 for a return ticket. I'll be gone for five days and most of the time will be spent climbing the mountain. I will have net access (will bring along my notebook and a 3G PCMCIA card) and I'll be armed with two digital cameras (with several SD and CF cards), plus a disposable film camera, just in case. I'll keep you all posted...sixthseal.com will be a travelogue for the next five days. :)

My House Steamboat is an eat-all-you-can steamboat buffet located in Pending. There is a cover charge of RM 18.90 per person and you are presented with a steamboat filled with your choice of broth (chicken or tom yam). My House Steamboat's implementation aims for the same target market as Hornbill's Corner [sixthseal.com], which is a similar establishment in town. The eatery has an appropriate (and literal) name as the steamboat eating establishment is located right in front of a residential house. There are a lot of interesting fabricated pieces for aesthetic value placed at appropriate intervals to add to the ambience of the place. It was raining heavily when we went there for the steamboat, which, as many Malaysians will tell you, is the best time to go. :) My House Steamboat has the standard fare of fried noodles, cooked vegetables, dishes of meat and other pre-cooked (but warm) food to supplement the steamboat dinner. The dining style is self-service, with one-way lines ...

The Road to Samadhi (Sempadi) It's a scenic pier on the beach by the sea... Fishing paraphernalia - shrimp for bait, fishing rods (anglers) and other miscellaneous items. How to hook bait 101 or spearing a sharp metal hook through shrimp This would be me, attempting to strike a suitable pose to look as if I was fishing although I know jack shit about fishing and the likes. ;) I went off exploring while waiting for a fish to eat the bait - there is a crumbly gravel path under the pier. Smoking joints while watching the tide come in is very therapeutic... I found a (dead and eviscerated) king crab... I also found several mud hoppers. Yes, there is a mud hopper somewhere here. It's a little like "Where's Waldo?" - you just have to squint a bit. The tree, struggling against the incoming tide: "Help me!", it said. Barnacle covered concrete structures underneath the peer - perfect for an afternoon nap. There's a lot of fish (small ones) in the calmer waters under the pier... ...

I received notification of a package sent to my old workplace address and went to pick it up today. It's a gift from Mr. Lim in Langkawi, who frequently sends samples of cigarettes which are always very much appreciated, especially with rumors of a RM 2 tobacco price hike to be announced on Budget Day. ;) It was sent in a POS Malaysia Pos Express Document Packaging and it felt strange to the touch. I opened it up and discovered the reason behind the unusual tactile sensations - the cigarette pack is ingeniously put into an envelope and sandwiched between two VCD's about a Buddhist society. It's remarkable how the Capri Menthol Superslims cigarette box is concealed in a Next Day Service document package. The VCDs helped to buffer the tell-tale shape and size of a cigarette pack. These are Duty Free cigarettes (Langkawi enjoys Tax Exemption status from tobacco and alcohol) and shipping them requires covert and innovative methods, such as this. Nice... Capri Menthol Superslims are ...
