Have been working on my project synopsis along with Krunal all day long; it seems to be shaping out quite well. I might put it online once I'm done.By the way, I have put up a Python implementation of the RSA algorithm; it's here. It's kinda messy and may be quite buggy too.

b4s Playlist Parser
A couple of days back, I started the b4s Playlist Parser project at SourceForge; I uploaded all the stuff sometime back. For the nonce, it's going to be as it is; shall work on it when I'm able to find time.I recommend using WinSCP for SCP; I had problems using PuTTY. Quite ironically, the SSH and SCP code of WinSCP is based on PuTTY!

Road Trip
We were supposed to drive all the way to Kerala on the 29th, but for reasons, things didn't work out. Anyways, yesterday we drove all the way to Shirdi; the journey was fine. We spent the night there. In the morning, we drove to a place called Shani Shinganapur. The way back home was really long and tiring. Nothing more...Got two class tests tomorrow...gawd knows what I'll do. Wish me luck!

Have been keeping very busy with all the assignments and the likes. The sort of topics we have to write on is depressing.Anyway, I finished the backend work for SBS Canada, using PHP/MySQL. Thanks to Amrita! It's through her that I got the work.By the way, I am now the technical editor for the CSI-SFIT student branch. Another something for my CV, eh?

I have been a victim before, and am a victim again, of the cheesy judging process that's prevalent in all the web designing contests at most MU colleges. My design, was without any doubt, the best at the web designing contest at DJSCOE's Protocol '03. I am aware that web designing is a creative process, and creativity cannot be measured. But when all the other works are botchy, choosing a good one shouldn't be difficult.I had a feeling Amrita would win the 2nd prize, and apparently she did (congrats!). But I also had a feeling that I would win the 1st prize. Anyway, I'll post screenshots of my design later, if I feel like.MU will remain what it is, characterized by all the middling folks who are part of it...and I'm here, stuck in this messy quagmire...like someone not in his natural milieu.

A Clockwork Orange
Just watched Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. The editing, in my opinion, is a bit sloppy. The screenplay is good. The AV sync, somehow, is bad. The second half of the movie is particularly intriguing. Definitely worth watching. It's one of those movies that's going to remain among my eternal favorites, probably more so because of the thought of the way things in life completely change for Alex (played by Malcolm McDowell) rather than the movie itself.I watched it on my damn PC, so the sound quality was shit.

The folks who developed the Abhiyantriki 2003 website have used one of my JavaScripts and coolly dropped the credits in them. How rude!

The Italian Job
Watched The Italian Job with Sunil; nothing spectacular here, nonetheless pretty enjoyable. I haven't seen the original one, so I can't say how this compares with it. Manu too was supposed to come, but he was tied up at home; I haven't seen him in months. After the movie, we wanted to try out something different instead of same old Mc, so we went out in search of an Iranian caf´, but without any luck; I know there are some in the fort area, but I couldn't figure out the way. So we had food at a small-time joint and then had beer at another. Now that my GRE and TOEFL are over, I'll have to attend college regularly, and the very thought of it is agonizing; the lectures suck big time.

Life is Good
The past few weeks have been really good and yesterday was really, really good: My TOEFL scores were decent. Managed to convince Krunal that the TOEFL is not very important (he was whining all the while about his scores). Vinod won a web-designing contest. Spoke to Deepa for some time; that was nice. My CV looks fine despite the not-so-good academics. Managed to find the Monaco font for PC. Managed to find a simple sed script to convert HTML files to LaTeX; I need it to convert my CV, which is in HTML, to DVI and I'm not interested in writing the TeX code from scratch. The script is pretty dated and will need lot of work around to work with the sort of HTML pages you would find today; I guess I should be able to code it. TBL actually wrote the script in a reply in a public WWW forum!!...but it was way back in '92...understandable, eh? Most importantly, the realization that everything on my part for the admissions are almost done. All in all, I feel good.

R
My TOEFL score is in the range 227-283; not to my liking, but then TOEFL is just a requisite for admissions and not a criteria.By the way, I have embarked on working with the R language; it's basically used for statistical computation. What aroused my interest in R is the fact that, though it's very similar to S, the implementation and semantics are based on Scheme.Vinod won the 1st prize in the web-designing contest at Fr. Agnel's technical festival—CIGMA '03. Way to go!

Spent last night writing an article on syndication. Amazingly, there were a number of typos; maybe it's because of my screwed-up keyboard or maybe it's just me.eDesic events are back! Some smart-alecky dude had coolly formatted our college's server long ago and for reasons I can't figure out, we did not maintain a backup of the eDesic stuff. Anyways, I managed to find the event registration modules and the basic pages lying on my PC; they'll do for now.Our class will be going on an 'industrial visit' to Infosys, Pune tomorrow. I'll have to miss it because of my TOEFL on Saturday; I wanted to go but maybe some other time...gawd knows.

Is being too good so bad?
Krunal and I went for the web designing contest at TSEC's ISAAC '03. I wasn't very keen, but Krunal needed the certificate bad...yea, he was confident we would win.Apparently, the judges couldn't quite believe that we created our website in the allotted time. The last time we were here we had a big argument with the organizers about the results—the judges had not considered our website because they felt it couldn't have been made by us. This time around we won the 2nd prize, which is really a pathetic consolation. Thankfully, this was the last time we would be ever going to TSEC.I guess among so many mediocre folks, it's really difficult to stand out when you're too good. I might be sounding chesty, but then that's perfectly alright.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VINOD!!Watched Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl with Sunil. It's pretty good. Johnny Depp, particularly, is brilliant. How much ever I try, it's difficult to totally abstain from having a fag. However, I am trying and that's only because of a special somebody.

A Note On Productivity
I have realized it's not important in what way you have been productive through the day; what matters is whether you have been productive at all.I was absolutely unproductive throughout yesterday. In the night I spend little over a couple of hours writing a program—in JavaScript—to read DevArticles' XML feed. The program supports sorting (newest/oldest), number of items to display etc. It was simple enough to code, nonetheless satisfying. This makes me realize another thing: no matter how you fritter away the entire day, a satisfying experience such as this, is enough to make the day not-so-wasted-away and yes you feel less guilty, consequently you get a better sleep too!I'll put up the code online someday later.Yesterday night, I heard a rendition of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here by Limp Bizkit & Goo Goo Dolls; it was a piece of unmitigated shit. Never, ever mess with a Floyd song!

New Newsletter Module
Sunday—as has always been the case—is the most unproductive day of the week. I lazed around almost the entire day.Having said that, what is productive and what is not depends on your perspective. Today I was productive in another way: I rewrote my websites's Newsletter module in PHP. Actually, it was incumbent upon me to do so. When I had written the Newsletter module (in Perl), I had little idea of how many would subscribe to it, so I did not use a database for the mailing list. Believe me! In retrospect, it was foolish of me not to use a database, irrespective of the number of subscribers I had expected. Anyways, since I use a MySQL database, PHP was the obvious choice. I have yet to ratify whether it's working fine.

Email versus E-mail
As we progress and all sorts of new stuff comes up, inevitably neologisms need to be created. Why not, then, use email instead of e-mail? Come on. Shoot the hyphen! After all, we use words like microcomputer and microbiology and not micro-computer and micro-biology. Ahem, there still might be people using those words—you can't call them words technically—but then they are just anachronous. I wonder why the transition from e-mail to email should take so much time; the transition will take place someday though, I think. Anyways, I ain't a good elucidator or what I just said might not be cogent enough, so you might want to read a more authoritative piece of text by D.E. Knuth here. I should hope you use email and not e-mail henceforth.
