College started today. As much as I wanted it to start, I now wish it had never started. They've introduced some icky rule regarding the term-work. Anyway, played table tennis after a really, really long time...that was fun.I have a terribly sore throat; it's just the throat, but I don't feel like doing anything...can't even sleep properly...I have been literally breathing through my mouth during the night.

Back in Mumbai
Back in Mumbai. While on the journey back, very surprisingly, I met Edgar at Ratnagiri. What was funny was that the compartment in which I was, halted exacty where Edgar was standing in the platform. Anyway, he didn't board the train; he was waiting for the next one.Another interesting thing: I spoke to a co-passenger, who is doing a course in professional photography in Mumbai; he happens to be from the same college where one (or more) member(s) of Motherjane were from.

The Joys of the Craft
I have always loved programming, duh, and I do know the reasons why, but I might not be able to enunciate them as well as the following quote (by F. P. Brooks, Jr., in his book The Mythical Man-Month): Why is programming fun? What delights may its practitioner expect as his reward? First is the sheer joy of making things. As a child delights in his mud pie, so the adult enjoys building things, especially things of his own design. I think this delight must be an image of God's delight in making things, a delight shown in the distinctness and newness of each leaf and each snowflake. Second is the pleasure of making things that are useful to other people. Deep within, we want others to use our work and to find it helpful. In this respect the programming system is not essentially different from the child's first clay pencil holder "for Daddy's Office". Third is the fascination of fashioning complex puzzle-like objects of interlocking moving parts and watching them work in subtle ...

Ecstatic...
Ever tried lying under the dark, starry skies? That's exactly what I did yesterday night, and it was wonderful. The rum that I had before, and the sound of LaBie (he's a Labrador named after Dream Theater's James LaBrie) were equally responsible for making it so special. The feeling was almost euphoric. The surrogate feeling of euphoria that you *could* get in whatever other way is nothing compared to the real experience.

Yesterday, HT, etc.
Yesterday night, we were at Fortune; Kamalesh, of course, was playing with his band. Lots of beautiful songs. Anyway, as for the food, we first had something called "Burmese Touch" (diced chicken cubes with noodles blended in exotic herbs), which frankly wasn't all that great. Later we had a typical Italian salad (chicken and beef cubes, mushroom, and other vegetables in mayonnaise); it was fantastic. Oh yea, I did booze, and fagged way too much.Did I mention I am obsessed with Motherjane's Mindstreet? My name has been mentioned in The Hindustan Times: "Managing change in ebusiness" by Puneet Mehrotra.

Looks like my "lashing out" at Charles Assisi's "Of Indian Software" (IC-CHIP Jan '04) has spawned some discussion at <a href="http://blogs.chip-india.com/readmore.php?entryid=173&blogid=1" class="content_link">Chip-India Blogs</a>.

Down with Love
Back from Down with Love. Not much fun.Anyway, had food from a place called RR. Amrita said it's so good that I had to check it out. They serve authentic Andhra food, which I don't know much about, but the food was quite nice...and it's really cheap! Next, Corner House; they have the best desserts...it's something you shouldn't miss when in Bangalore.

Met S Ramdas at his office in Indiranagar. We spoke about Python and Perl to developer magazines in India, etc, etc. Indiranagar, apparently, is the best residential area in Bangalore.By the way, I now know for fact that Bangalore has not just one KFC, but at least two. There's one here at Indiranagar, and this one's not as crowded, and is better than the one at Brigade Road.Anyway, later I headed to Styx. I haven't been to many pubs in the city, but of the lot I have been to, this one is the best.

Kal Ho Naa Ho
Watched Kal Ho Naa Ho yesterday evening. Everybody here at home wanted to watch so I obliged. I really have nothing much to say about the movie. It was just fine...same old crappy story, etc.I have always felt that if you have Sharukh in a movie, it'd do better than if it had someone else in his place. You know what I mean eh?

Love Actually
Watched Love Actually. Seems like Richard Curtis was sick of all the hatred that's all around. So he wanted to make a point through this movie: that it's only love that's all around. Quite true, at least in the movie. It's got not one, but eight couples dealing with their love lives. With so many people and so many activities, all in one movie, Richard has done quite a good job.It would be unfair to judge the actors' performance, because with so many characters, none have a major on-screen presence. However, the movie doesn't demand anything extraordinary, as is the case with most romantic dramas.I thought I'd say that I hated the movie, but somehow I feel like watching it again. Maybe it's because the movie is quite refreshing, or whatever, but definitely worth a watch...at least once!

Kill Bill
Watched Kill Bill yesterday. The editing wavered in quality, methinks; cinematography, excellent. The first half drags, but the movie gets interesting later. The "art of combat" is flawed, but more significantly, reality is skewed to more than an extent in a supposed-to-be-almost-real world. Despite all, I quite enjoyed the movie, and am eagerly awaiting the next part.By the way, we managed to find a couple of Irani caf´s at Dhobi Talao, but unfortunately they were closed by the time we reached...some day later, I guess...

py2exe
I started using py2exe recently to convert my Python scripts to executables. Pretty good. Anyway, to make things a wee bit easier, I wrote a small Batch file.
