I'm now a beta associate
I'm now a beta associate although my association is still in beta. Which is fine - because that is the way it's supposed to be... I'm looking very much forward to be working with even more good people in my network. Very very exciting.

The Beta Manifesto
Over at CPH 127 they are discussing "Beta" after posting "The Beta Manifesto". I've decided to post my ranting comment here as well: "Warning: Rant coming..... I'm happy that you don't mean "Under Construction" the way most 1.gen. websites tended to present themselves just a few years back! Thomas is on to something by saying that the reason why we need to call it beta is, that we compare it to another era (industrial) where atoms - bricks and mortar - made products and services "finished". We don't just yet understand how this state of flux (beta) is the norm and not a state "before" finishing. Two remarks: Many years ago (20 something) this was often referred to as the "zen" of everything - and budhism was popular among "new age" thinkers in the west. The point was - primitively put - that the important part was "the way" or "the process" and not the end product or the goal. Computer gurus from California were often into alternative culture - like "zen" culture. One proponent of ...

Incentivizing knowledge sharing
Creating Incentives! What's the deal? Here's a deal. Very cool. Incentivizing knowledge sharing - Filed under: collaborationRandy Morin over at The RSS Blog has a post today about his 10 favorite blogging tools. The most interesting thought there to me is that he rewards whoevever tags the best link for:randymorin in del.icio.us each month with a free book of their choice (up to $20) from Amazon.com! I think that's pretty interesting. Link love is often the incentive for knowledge sharing online, but this makes me wonder if anyone else does things similar. The engadget mobile giveaways are apparently wildly successful. The nonprofit organization I work for, Net Squared, recently gave away an iPod nano to one respondent in their survey of nonprofit organizations about Web 2.0 adoption. What other methods of providing incentive for people to share have people come across? I think I'm going to do something like Morin is doing myself. Such a good idea, but are there better ones out ...

Examining the roots and growth of Web 2.0
RSS - a membership organisation. Very well put. So what to make of it? Let me think for a while... Examining the roots and growth of Web 2.0 - Filed under: blogging, RSSHeather Green and Steven Baker's excellent blog at Business Week has two interesting posts available this morning both related to the nature and extent of Web 2.0 tools. The most recent is an intro to a new Business Week online segment called Web Smart. The series of stories will highlight in text and a podcast a different company "that's using the Web to improve productivity, reach out to the public, rev up marketing, or streamline internal operations." The first Web Smart profile is on Boeing, who apparently uses blogs both internally and externally. Sounds like a great series. Examples of corporate use of new web tools, amongst companies large and small, are very useful for those of us who try to get others turned on to the possibilities. Perhaps Biz Week's series will shed some light on the debate over Steve ...

A very cool company.... Pandora Squared - Business and Web 2.0 Consulting, Social Media Marketing, Software and Blogging Any media firm that takes the path of News Corp. demonstrates a good understanding of the commercial viability of the web as a content delivery and advertising generation platform. And while MySpace is still to produce the advertising dollars that its owner hopes to recover, the fact that it has so far generated 70 million registered users may just be a good starting point for capturing the ever-elusive youth market.

The elements of interaction design
This article deals with interaction design bigtime. There's even a book coming up! The Elements of Interaction Design :: UXmatters In much the same way that inert gases don’t mingle with other gases, objects that don’t move don’t interact. An interaction is some sort of communication, and communication is about movement: our vocal cords vibrating as we speak, our hands and arms writing or typing as we send email or instant messages, sound and data moving between two entities.

Jews in the ashtray
The iranian newspaper Hamshahri has launched a competition to find the best cartoon about the holocaust. This reminds me of the old joke:Question: How many jews can can you put in a VW? Answer: 105 - Two on the front seats, three in the rear and a hundred in the ash tray. No offense. We laughed a lot when I was a kid. Here's a link to some jew jokes. :-) Here's a link to some Jesus jokes. I don't have a good drawing for that above joke, but I have a few other images. I know this is tasteless, and more or less offending. I don't mean any offense. This is an illustration, that such images are a part of western culture. The Mohammed drawings were not very special in that sense. When some muslims claim that we would never make fun of jesus and jews - they are plain wrong. In our part of the world we make fun of everything. I'm sorry some people take offense. We should be more careful what we say. But Jyllands Posten was actually trying out whether there was reason to fear. The direct ...

The Clash of Civilizations and the Mohammed drawings in a cultural perspective
I just dug out my copy of Huntingtons "The Clash of Civilizations". This book offers great insights to the nature of the conflict between Denmark and the Islamic civilization. There's now an excellent article in Wikipedia summarizing the main points of the book. There's also more than one version of the original article on the web. One point made by Huntington is that we in the western world often mistake our values for universal values - and so insist that every country in the world should adopt these values - as they are superior to other sets of values (I too think they are but....). This entails a secular political system with parliamentary democracy, freedom of expression etc. It is not at all clear to all people in the other civilizations why they should adopt these "western values". We should take note of that - while maintaining that our values are untouchable in our part of the world. It is exactly the insistence that values are universal that sparks such controversy, and ...

The not so smart mobs
Technology plays a part in the ongoing conflict between Denmark and the Islamic world. As Trine-Maria points out in her excellent short analysis of the media usage (danish language sorry), some of the media carrying the messages are not so smart and not so good at dialogue. SMS is a problematic form of communication. It may well be that Howard Rheingold celebrates smart mob behaviour in his book "Smart Mobs", but (as he's not entirely unaware of) SMS "chain letters" can go bad. Rumor has it that SMS messages ran amok in the mideast - carrying rumors that the Koran had been burned in the streets of Copenhagen. This is - according to the danish police authorities - untrue - a total falsehood. But an SMS carrying such a message would be very useful to get people agitated I guess. In Denmark we saw a number of demonstrations saturday - fighting to set the agenda. Some of the people gathering had been summoned by SMS.Blogs are more dialog ready. They take comments and thus blogs will ...

Sad situation in blogland
Sad situation in bloglandAfter the first phases of the Iraq invasion, I promised myself not to post a lot about politics. I'll stick to that decision. However it saddens me to see a lot of thoughtless comments on the present controversy over the Jyllands Posten drawings of Mohammed.I'm all for freedom of religion and freedom of expression. I'm all for respect of each other, and peacefull debates over differences.I don't like the aggressive way some bloggers address this in. I don't think most of those thoughtless comments made in blogland were made by people who really thought about the fact that those same comments can be found by others - all over the world - and can spark even more controversy.Would it not be better to think before writing in this situation?Calm down everybody. Let's go back and take another look at the issue that started it all, and not act on rumors and word of mouth. We need peace and time to think - not war. -->

Open AJAX and no Microsoft.....
IBM leads Open AJAX coalition the heading says. Apparently a coalition of companies such as: BEA Systems, Borland, the Dojo Foundation, the Eclipse Foundation, Google, IBM, Laszlo Systems, Mozilla, Novell, Openwave Systems, Oracle, Red Hat, Yahoo, Zend and Zimbra - have started an initiative to promote the use of AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) in a number of ways. It's Open - so no Microsoft. Sad. I wonder if Microsoft will ever see the light. Naturally a lot of what goes on in the Open Source world is not in the interest of Microsoft - just like some of what goes on in the Open Standards world is not in the interest of Microsoft - business wise. But Ajax and Open Standards document formats must be in the best interest of Microsoft. Only - Microsoft still believes (and perhaps rightfully so) that they can control the market because they own the desktop. So it is not in their best interest to support the development of the browser into an interface as cool as that in the next ...

Microsoft shooting someone in the foot
Here's how idiotic you can be if you're a big corporation like Microsoft: After downloading the public beta of IE7 - the installer wants to make sure that I'm running on a legal copy of Windows (which I do). Now the verification proces wants to run an ActiveX object, but apparently my Firefox won't run it. So Microsoft asks me to do something else - which i respectfully recline - as I don't have the required desire to try this beta on my home laptop anyway. So now Microsoft lost a potential user of IE7. Not that I harbour any ideas that they are mourning the loss - but they actually effectively prevent people from migrating from Firefox to IE. Strange but entertaining. -->

Sex and Microsoft in the meantime
This is a very long post. To read it in its full length click on the "read more" link at the bottom of the post (if it is there (if it is not there - you're looking at the full length post ;-))). Microsofts next sexy incarnation will be hard to beat for the competitors - both on the desktop and in the business backend. Microsoft is feeling the hot breath from Open Source solutions like Open Office and Linux desktops like Kubuntu. None of them are real threats yet - and if it goes the Microsoft way - they won't be in the foreseeable future. Also Microsoft is aiming its guns at the Enterprise and Business Solution competitors by integrating applications into the very office tools that Microsoft "owns". This is the way to OWN the market in a business setting - seducing "Information Workers" with sexy productivity enhancing tools build right into their everyday desktop applications like Outlook, Word, Excel etc. As you can see - this is not really a post about sex. It is about the ...

Seth Gottlieb on Drupal and other OSS CMS's
Seth Gottlieb has published a report discussing how to select an OSS CMS - and how it differs from choosing a proprietary system. He has taken a look at a number of systems: Alfresco, Bricolage, Drupal, eZ publish, Lenya, Mambo/Joomla, MediaWiki, Midgard, OpenCMS, phpBB, Plone, Roller, Twiki, Typo3 and Zope CMF.Sadly his reporting on Drupal does not do Drupal justice as he totally ignores the real strenghts of Drupal - the taxonomy system, the APIs, etc - and thus misses the main points where Drupal excells and some of the others fail. But it's well worth the download. Technorati Tags: Drupal, OSSCMS -->
