First of all, I apologize sincerely for the lack of updates lately; I have a few things written down, and just need to rewrite them in an appropriate form for the blog. However, I haven't done it yet because the site is in a transitional period (changing CMSs in addition to web servers), plus I've been having too much fun with my (über-hacked) Xbox! Anyway, here's this one. Perhaps some supreme force (or simply chance)...

According to 2001 Australian Census data (kindly supplied to me by the Australian Bureau of Statistics), just over 15% of people in Australia wrote that they belonged to "no religion" (the footnote specifies that this "Includes 'No religion nfd', 'Agnosticism', 'Atheism', 'Humanism' and 'Rationalism'."). Interestingly, the figure is over 20% in South Australia, but that is still a minority. And, yes, I am one of them. :) (As an interesting side note, a whopping 67%...

(I'm currently posting fom an Internet café, as I'm still in the Philippines, due to fly back home tomorrow night (2004-01-05), arriving the next day (2004-01-06).) I just came across a page that details how to make your own scanning tunneling microscope. I haven't looked through it thorougly, but I doubt it'd be very practical. :) I wonder if the microscope that this shows you how to build is capable of performing feats as done...

Hi, just a quick note to announce that I'll be in the Philippines from 2003-12-27 until 2004-01-06. I have no idea how much I will be able to access the Internet, so I may be unavailable through those channels until after I return....

I just came across a couple of amazing items. The first one is the Logitech diNovo Media Desktop. This is a Bluetooth mouse, keyboard, and "MediaPad". The MediaPad is basically a numeric keypad (the keyboard does not have one), but it also has a screen to display things like "email or instant message notifications, and it lets you monitor media selection playback status". Check out the picture of it to see how cool it looks. Apparently...

I think I've found a project for myself these holidays: Making paper moticycles. From the images at the site, these things look amazing. My first task will be to build the YZF-R1 and accessory kit. I think that whole setup is about the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Take a look at the image on that page; the detail is incredible! Anyway, I've first got to find a decent color printer (I've got...

Last night while lying in bed, trying (rather unsuccessfully) to get to sleep, it became extremely apparent to me how much I use speech in my head. When I think about something, it is nearly always in language (I talk to myself, internally). I'm assuming that this is standard human behavior. For example, try multiplying 48 and 29 in your head. If you're like me, you 'hear' yourself saying out what you're doing ("OK, 9...

Over the last couple of days, I've played Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates for many, many hours. It's an online game where you play the role of a pirate who can have sword fights with other pirates, join a crew, board a ship, and perform various duties there (sailing, navigating, bilging, carpentering etc.). Of course, you can attack other ships, or use ships to trade goods between islands. You can then use your money to buy clothes,...

For the last couple of weeks I have been getting mildly depressed (varying, actually) at the utter futility of life. In my current belief system, it really is pointless. That takes the pressure off people to "succeed" or whatever, but it means that anything we do is without meaning and will not be worth anything. And there's nothing I can do about it. I suppose that's one of the purposes of religion; to induce a...

My latest article seems to have completely disappeared from my server. Along with that, a whole ton of mail (and bounces) just came through today, some dating back to about a week ago. I think it's due to some kind of server change-over or something. If you e-mailed me and I haven't replied, please try again today. The article wasn't that great anyway, so I'm not too bothered about that (but seriously, where did it...

OK, I just found the coolest case-mod I've seen yet. It's called "3". Take a look at the picture of it on its web site. Oh man, that's a nice case. It's actually designed to look like the number 3, but I don't think that's immediately obvious. I think it's nicer just to look at it in the shape that it is. Wow. :)...

As you may know, I've switched over to a new server. I'm just finishing ironing out the wrinkles caused by the changeover. The biggest issue has been the e-mail; it's just not cooperating with me. I think it's back online now, though. I've just spend about 5 hours trying to fix it and get it set up. And now, the server's conveniently gone down completely. (Perhaps it is convenient though, 'cause it means I have...

What a strange idea! Take a look at the Gibson Digital Guitar. It's a guitar with two outputs: a traditional analog audio jack, and (get this) an Ethernet port. You read that right! Reading the web site shows you a lot of cool things that this allows. For a start, you can run the digital Ethernet lead over 2 km without any loss of audio quality (presumably standard Ethernet repeaters would be required, though). Also, the...

I just finished watching the great movie called Dr. Strangelove (Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb), by the famous Stanley Kubrick. Great title, great movie! You'll have cut it some slack because it's old (it was released in 1964) and excuse a couple of effects (maybe only on 2 or 3 occasions, though). The storyline and the actual movie are top-notch! There are lots of jokes, and they're not used...

Yes, I'm still here! Yeah, I know, one week (as you can tell from the subject if you're reasonably familiar with Unix, but anyway...)... I've been busy this week studying for my exams on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday I had German and IT, and this morning I had Physics. They're all 3 hours each, which is not so bad by themselves, but Thursday was a real killer. During the IT exam (the second one...

Mac OS X 10.3 (a.k.a. Panther) has been treating me mostly nicely so far. The only problem I've had is that my firewall somehow got screwed up, but a quick trip to the macosxhints Forums quickly fixed that. There are plenty of reviews everywhere, so I won't add to it. I will, however, discuss what I've found extremely cool and some interesting things I've noticed. Exposé. I love it. As I read somewhere, it really does make...
