i love you and all, but i'm not paying forty bucks [fifty after ticketmaster's bullshit "service fees"] to go see you when you roll thru anaheim in november. i can't justify paying that sort of money to come out and see y'all perform. not even if talib kweli is on the bill [which he is] and you guys swear to god that you'll do "definition" sometime during the evening.i hope you understand.yours truly, jason

so i got off the phone with april at scion of buena park not too long ago and she had some good news...apparently they've got a 2006 xb in camouflage [see above] that should be coming into the port sometime around the 22nd of august. while i had my heart set on the blue, they don't have one of those on their delivery schedule for another month. and while i could be patient, i really don't want to wait that long.sure, i could try to hunt a stock blue one out at another nearby dealer but it's sort of a pain in the ass. from what i understand they end up tricking most of the new cars out at the port unless they've been earmarked for someone.*shrug* it doesn't upset me too much. after all, the camo was my second color choice. it's a bit more mannish of a color than the pearl blue anyhow.but yeah, i'm excited...

my old circle of friends used to have this inside joke where any time netbsd was brought up someone would loudly chime in, "ah yes, netbsd... you know there's a port of netbsd that works on my grandmother's vibrator, right?"most of the times it'd induce both shudders and guffaws. and eventually the standard response became "i never have been able to get the vibrator port to work... but my toaster runs it like a dream." it was sort of like our own little absurdist secret handshake as we never really thought that netbsd would ever really run on either device.well, it looks like someone finished the toaster port. i guess all we need now is for someone to cram a gumstix in a jelly dong...

i had a very "gee whiz" moment over the weekend with the bank of america website, so i thought i'd share...ever since b of a fucked me over with a direct deposit snafu back in 1998, i've been bank account free. yeah, i'm one of those weird anomalies that you only ever hear about. other than having to jump thru a few hoops whenever i wanted to cash my paycheck, i really haven't had too much of a problem without one. honestly, it wasn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. in fact, i was really happy without one...that is, of course, until i figured out that i sort of needed one if i wanted to buy a car.since i'd cleared things up with bank of america back in 2000, i thought i'd give them another chance. besides, i work in a building where the bank is literally downstairs. call me lazy, but it seemed like a nice fit. *shrug* were there a wells fargo in the same building i'd probably be with them right now.now since i'm sort of a hermit, i really wasn't looking forward to sitting in ...

a little birdie got a copy of the new album [plans] to me.so. very. good.and despite the fact that i totally downloaded it, i'm going to have no problem buying a copy on august 30th.but as suck free as i think it is, i know pitchfork is going to take a shit all over this one. which is unfortunate but expected. *shrug*

death cab for cutie's new single "soul meets body" just took over the top heavy rotation spot on my ipod. seriously good stuff. well, i like it. *shrug*also, "marching bands of manhattan" is very reassuring. i have a good feeling that the new album - which is their first on a major label - isn't going to suck.p.s. i'm not sure if it's my ibook's lack of ram or the fact that it was taped off the radio but that link for "marching bands..." seems to have a couple skips. just letting you know that you shouldn't expect a perfect copy. hope that doesn't ruin it for you. enjoy!

does anyone else find it funny that epitaph went thru a whole bunch of trouble to "internet proof" the new danger doom album? i mean the internet pretty much made dangermouse the latest hot producer, and this is the thanks we get? pfft.i hope this was the label's choice and not dangermouse's - otherwise i'm bound to label this one of the quickest 180's i've ever seen and move on.

august is not being that awesome of a month so far.i had my laptop open and charging back in my bedroom last night while i was in the front of the house watching entourage. when i came back to shut it down and go to bed, my ibook couldn't nudge itself out of screensaver stasis."odd," i thought. "but things have been taking a bit longer since i rma'ed that ram. i'll take a shower and see if it's cool then."ten minutes later, i'd come back to my room and still the same screen greeted me. something has to be frozen... oh well, hopefully a reboot will help.so i issue a cmd-ctrl-power and the machine does it magic. but on the reboot it can't get past the boot screen. hrm. a reboot and a cmd-v to verbose mode might give me some idea of what's going on.when the computer comes back up, what do i see but "not a mach-o file, bad magic number" peppering my console. fuck. this can't be good. and after i do a whole bunch of research on the issue i find out that no, it's not good. and it seems ...

for the past two weeks, programs have been randomly crashing on my precious ibook. since i'm no stranger to troublshooting mac issues, i run the normal battery of tests.i checked every plist twice... things still randomly crashed.i cleared my font and system cache... still no improvement.i booted from the install disk, ran disk utility and repaired both my permissions and the hard disk... after that, it took a couple hours for the random crashes to come back. but they did.i run the hardware test disk... bingo!it looks like the 512mb stick of ram is in the process of failing. *shrug* it could be worse... it could have been the dimm that's soldered onto the board. that might have been no fun.guess who gets to spend an otherwise lazy friday at work on the phone with 1-800-4-memory to start the rma process. if you said "jason" give yourself a gold star.thank god i bought the memory with the lifetime warranty....

cool hunting - now with rss ads, originally uploaded by boogah.waking up to find the that cool hunting's rss feed had republished itself was one thing. but to find that all the entries contained the exact same american apparel banner ad is another. i love what they gang there does, but i don't appreciated ads being shoved down my throat.someone ought to build a php/perl/ruby/python/whatever script that strips ads out of feeds...

i've suddenly found myself with a hefty handful of media to digest...rolling stone 970, the hunter s. thompson tribue issuean xvid hdtv rip of last night's "alias" [via]audio from evan, danny and merlin's etech talks [via]the bbc radio play of william gibson's "neuromancer" [via]it really doesn't look like that much of a pile until you take into account the run times... "neuromancer" is two hours long; the etech talks go for about an hour and forty minutes; "alias" is another forty minutes; and i can digest the rolling stone in about an hour.the thing is, my info sponge of a brain sort of wants to finish it all tonight. and it may seem antiquated, but i need to focus on one thing at a time to really absorb it. since i can't justify spending five and a half hours doing each individual task, i won't finish all of it. besides, seinfeld is on in a half an hour...updata: i took a sick day on friday, yet i still haven't been able to slog my way thru the radio play for "neuromancer". i'm ...

hit a couple of places that were new to me over the weekend, so i thought i'd go ahead and review them...:: gr/eats - the shrimp curry was superb and the mixed fries [potato/yams/bananas] were a welcome change from the straight up potato offering found elsewhere. if you haven't had almond jello, do try theirs for desert. it's extremely simple and unadorned, but oh so tasty.:: fred 62 - i really enjoyed fred 62's mac `n cheese and their burger was rather big for the price. even though i don't like baked apples, the punk tart was outstanding. the waitstaff was all male, so i prefer swingers in that respect.

it looks like all the cool kids are ramping up for emerging tech 2005. i hadn't realized it was less than a week away until i caught the post on the make blog about the ipod ready event schedule. and that sort of brought it all home.you see, i've found crash space and requested the time off from work, but i have no way of actually getting into the conference. i can't afford a $425 day pass, let alone a $1000 admission. that shit is too rich for my blood. especially when i'm saving up to get a car. something i haven't had for almost seven years now.you know how hard it is not having a car in los angeles? actually, it's not very hard at all. sure you almost always miss your connector bus, but you get used to it after a while. but try being leashed to such an undependable mode of transit when you have a girlfriend who lives 35 miles away. someone you adore and makes you feel complete for the first time in your life. then the thing you've grown used to becomes a huge pain in the ass.i ...

:: if you find yourself over by the beverly center, do go get a snack at boule. the hype they've been getting is well deserved. their pastries are absolutley divine and the staff is kind, attentive and attractive.p.s. get a taster spoon of boule's lime basil sorbet. your mouth will thank me later.p.p.s. in case you'd forgotten, there is nothing of redeeming value at the beverly center. try to avoid it if at all possible.p.p.p.s. megs took some pictures of what we picked up on our visit.:: apparently the big food item right now are paninis. for the uninitiated, a panini is basically a pressed, grilled sandwich. they're pretty damn tasty when done correctly. but if you listen to the folks at williams-sonoma, you're going to need a panini press... and that's gonna cost you around $60-100. so if you can't wait for target to sell a $15 panini press, here's a quick kitchen hack for you...take a brick and wrap it in tinfoil. when your recipie calls for you to place your sandwich in a ...

so it looks like evan and noah have been busy... apparently they've assembled a crack team and will soon launch odeo, a podcasting startup.as much as i've aped on podcasting in the past, i think evan and noah may be on to something.Compared with the other various approaches so far, Odeo (pronounced OH-dee-oh) means to be podcast central - an all-in-one system that makes it possible for someone with no more equipment than a telephone to produce podcasts and also makes it possible for users to assemble custom playlists of audio files and copy them directly onto MP3 audio players. ... Odeo plans to base its business on the premise that the explosion of digital audio content has created the need for a central place to find relevant material and that there will also be a need for a market to buy and sell "premium" content in much the style of the eBay online marketplace.don't worry about the high pitched squeal you just heard... i'm pretty sure that was dave winer. but i'm not sure if ...

i've had a 3 day weekend to try to work thru the cold i came down with on friday, but it looks like it's going nowhere. i'm dripping mucous from every oraface that can excrete it. belive me, it's not pretty.since i've been quarantined in my bedroom for 90% of the weekend, i expect cabin fever to set in sometime around mid-afternoon. i guess what i'm trying to say is, don't be surprised if i show back up a bit later and start rambling.

"Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide, the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most men's reality. Weird heroes and mould-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that the tyranny of 'the rat race' is not yet final."hunter s. thompsonbonus link: i've gone ahead and set up a torrent of one of hunter's appearances on conan so people could see him in action. if i recall correctly, he was there to promote 2003's "kingdom of fear". enjoy!

there are a few things about the new mac blogging tool bubbler that struck me as odd:the bubbler logotype has a differently colored "r" as its last letter.bubbler parent company five across sounds like another [very popular] blogging software publisher.maybe i'm trying too hard to find a similarity. but there's still something about both of those things that puts up a red flag in my head.
