Despite my window areas lacking any kind of hook, latch or other place to attach a feeder, I've rigged a bird feeder onto the satellite antenna brace in an attempt to bring some of the local wildlife to my window. The tree sparrows found it the other day and have been feeding fairly frequently--but certainly not all the time. And they tend to be skittish, flying off if I move even a little anywhere in sight. But if I'm patient and sit by the window for long enough, they won't notice me if I'm still. So I set up the...

This article in New Scientist invites us to "image movies and computer games in which you get to smell, taste and perhaps even feel things. That's the tantalising prospect raised by a patent on a device for transmitting sensory data directly into the human brain - granted to none other than the entertainment giant Sony. The technique suggested in the patent is entirely non-invasive.It describes a device that fires pulses of ultrasound at the head to modify firing patterns in targeted parts of the brain, creating "sensory experiences" ranging from moving images to tastes and sounds. This could give blind or deaf people the chance to see or hear, the patent claims". Sony patent takes first step towards real-life Matrix

Sumana rented it and we watched it tonight. It was really good, but in an amazing twist of fate the movie was ruined for me by false spoilers! Somehow while hearing about the movie (or, perhaps, seeing the name of the movie) I got the impression that halfway through, the main character got killed and came back as a zombie, but nonetheless they managed to pull it off as a romantic comedy. I thought this was so awesome that I kept wondering how they would manage it, and once it became clear that 1) it was not going to happen, and 2) the nature of zombiehood in this movie was such that it couldn't happen, it was a big disappointment. Still the best zombie movie I've ever seen.

If there’s one thing that’s annoying its waiting for Flash to load up on a flickr page just so I see a picture of someone’s cat. It also gets a little boggy when I try loading up more than one instance of Flickr. Well this fine human being name Neil used Firefox, Greasemonkey and AJAX [...]

I've had a Flickr account since the service first started, but I've never really used it. I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to set up a new moblog on my own site since TextAmerica no longer offers RSS feeds for free accounts, so now I’m joining all of the cool kids and hanging out on Flickr instead. It will mostly be my moblog, although I may post other pictures down the road. For family and friends, the RSS feed is here and my tags are here. In a way, it’s my own little experiment to see how well I do at adding metadata to my photos online since I’ve been horrible at doing this in the past.

An open source continuation based web server engine for Sisc Scheme has recently been announced. It's called SISCWeb and some examples are running here. SISCweb features an interactive, REPL-based web application development style. Developers can write applications interactively, without ever bouncing the server, and, insofar as it is desirable, without ever losing application state. (In fact, save for the Java portion, SISCweb itself is written interactively in a REPL.) Through the use of continuations, SISCweb does away with the page-centric execution model typical of web applications. Every time a response is sent to the browser, the program execution flow is suspended, to be then resumed from that exact point when the browser submits a request.

(Should we forbid community weblog entries? [Graham Jones (Infoseller & Professional Speaker)])
Yesterday I asked whether we should get rid of the social entries in Ecademy weblogs and I was told that they were essential - much like having chat over coffee in the office. So what then is the difference between such 'social' weblog entries and 'community' entries? Aren't they serving the same function? APE 2005 (Alternative Press Expo) was a good warmup for Comic-Con: < 1/10th the size, ~ 1/10th the cost, ~ 1/10th the time. It's also a good time to give more love to the indies that generally look a lot more lonely during the full-scale Comic-Con. I picked up a print, a poster, and a t-shirt, and got a sketch from each artist that I purchased something from. My favorite item is a PETA-be-damned "How to Create a Fighting Machine" poster print by Jared Purrington, which is a visual instruction manual for turning a roll of tape, a knife, and a hamster into your own instrument of death. Purrington's sketch for me can be viewed as a sort-of appendix: I also picked up a samurai rabbit shirt ("The Cursed" by Duzty) (no, not Usagi/Sakai). Haven't read the comic, as there is not much posted online yet. My last item is a print by Attaboy, which looks like this without the text. This is a quick sketch he did for me, which is appropriately twisted: Gallery Nucleus had a bunch of stuff that I ...
