I just took a look at my iTunes track play count. I was sort of surprised by some of the bands that I clearly like to listen to when I run. I think that I need to turn on "shuffle". Report on the Skoll World Forum for Social Entrepreneurship
By David GurteenSo much good stuff in this report from Lee Bryant on the Skoll World Forum for Social Entrepreneurship. But one passage in particular excited me: How do we get empowered adults if we treat young people as powerless subjects? We need a civil rights movement for children. Young people want to be effective in society, and they can be the most powerful force for implementing change if we let them get involved and help solve their own problems. This can also have spin off benefits in education and performance. Think on !

Vampires as rabid killers
Sure, but explain the stake through the heart. Early tales of vampirism frequently coincided with reports of rabies outbreaks in and around the Balkans, stretching back to a particularly devastating epidemic of rabies in dogs, wolves and other animals in Hungary from 1721-28. […] The vampire’s famous aversion to garlic and to mirrors could be ascribed to hypersensitivity, which comes with rabies infection, according to his theory. “Men with rabies … react to stimuli such as water, light, odors or mirrors with spasms of the facial and vocal muscles that can cause hoarse sounds, bared teeth and frothing at the mouth of bloody fluid,” he said. In the past, he contended, “a man was not considered rabid if he was able to stand the sight of his own image in a mirror.” […] He said even the vampire’s fatal kiss, the bite itself, could be traced to rabies. “Man has a tendency to bite, both in fighting and in sexual activities,” Gomez-Alonso says. “The intensification of such tendency by ...

Unsustainable
More good news. The human race is living beyond its means. A report backed by 1,360 scientists from 95 countries - some of them world leaders in their fields - today warns that the almost two-thirds of the natural machinery that supports life on Earth is being degraded by human pressure. The study contains what its authors call “a stark warning” for the entire world. The wetlands, forests, savannahs, estuaries, coastal fisheries and other habitats that recycle air, water and nutrients for all living creatures are being irretrievably damaged. In effect, one species is now a hazard to the other 10 million or so on the planet, and to itself. “Human activity is putting such a strain on the natural functions of Earth that the ability of the planet’s ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted,” it says. […] A growing proportion of the world lives in cities, exploiting advanced technology. But nature, the scientists warn, is not something to be enjoyed at ...

Sunday morning
If there is a wrong time to be caught in Madras, it is in the month of April. My sympathy and admiration lay with those who brave the searing heat and get on with their work. But last year, it was different. April started with a short spell of welcome rain. And just when I thought it was a one-off occurrence, it happened again this year. Sunday morning was pleasant. The sun behind the clouds. The smell of the rain-kissed earth. Damp roads. Cool breez

Problems with the LinkedIn process
On Ecademy there's a club called Attention as a product. run by Ronald Wopereis. Over on the other side of the world, Steve Gilmor is involved in attention.xml. So Ronald sends me a Linkedin request to put them in touch. Except that the only way for me to do that is via Jason Calacanis. Now I don't Jason well, and I don't know Steve at all. And passing this request reflects on me and I don't think I want to become known to these sort of people as someone who blindly forwards LinkedIn requests. Now since attention.xml has a wiki, probably has a mailing list, and Steve probably has contact details available on the web, it would make far more sense for Ronald to just call him direct like we always used to. I reckon this whole 6 degrees thing for deliberate networking is a load of old rubbish. It's an interesting statistical analysis but it's not actually useful. We all say "Could you introduce me to X": A-B-X. We sometimes say "Do you know anyone who could introduce me to X" A-B-C-X. ...

A Generous Allowance
Many parents give their children a small amount of money on a regular basis and watch how they manage it. This is called an allowance because they "allow" the child an opportunity to practice managing money. The practice continues throughout our lives. Managers mete out responsibilities to employees to see how they will perform. Teachers carefully check to see how much latitude they should give a class on an assignment. Doctors monitor their patients to see how they will respond to medication before they prescribe more. No one blindly hands out resources or responsibilities. We all give more to the one who has proven they can manage what they have. God does the same thing with His children.

RFID tags for cars
Texas is considering requiring all vehicles to have RFID tags in their inspection certificates. These tags are explicitly for identifying vehicles for enforcement purposes (more information on /.): Sec. 601.507. SPECIAL INSPECTION CERTIFICATES. (a) Commencing not later than January 1, 2006, the department shall issue or contract for the issuance of special inspection certificates to be affixed to motor vehicles that are inspected and found to be in proper and safe condition under Chapter 548. (b) An inspection certificate under this section must contain a tamper-resistant transponder, and at a minimum, be capable of storing: (1) the transponder's unique identification number; and (2) the make, model, and vehicle identification number of the vehicle to which the certificate is affixed.
