Skype Dialer for Outlook
Peter Kalmstrom has created a plug-in for integrating Skype with Outlook. It also requires IE as your browser. While this is not interesting for my desktop, and Linux-box at home, it is potentially useful for my business laptop, which is fully MS as it is integrated with our company's back-office. Skype and other tools like RSS, IM etc. have been taken up by my colleagues since I joined them last year at a steady pace. Offering a way in which it really connects with our default working environment supports that. Via Terry Frazier, who saw it at Stuart Henshall's.

Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) - the first benzodiazepine
Chlordiazepoxide is the very first benzodiazepine that came out and it's the prototype for the benzodiazepine compounds. Leo Sternbach was the man who discovered the psychoactive properties of chlordiazepoxide, and it as a fluke too. He worked on synthesizing biotin when he first went into Roche and when that was done, he was about to clear his lab when he noticed a crystalline compound. He didn't think it would be worth sending for tests, but dropped it off anyway, and that decision gave us the wonderful benzodiazepine family we have today. ;) It's all written down in "Good Chemistry: The Life and Legacy of Valium Inventor Leo Sternbach" and his personal memoir "The Benzodiazepine Story" published in-house by Roche (rare book). The product trials started in May 1957 and the excellent results from the clinical trials allowed Roche to debut Librium (clordiazepoxide hcl) in 1960, which was well received, considering the sedatives of that time didn't exactly have excellent safety ...

When targeting becomes patronising nonsense
Marketing campaigns that target specific demographics groups run the risk of being perceived as patronising and silly. I came upon this article about the various campaigns that have run in the US to target “young males”. Because of this group’s aversion t

When the Pope came to Ireland
Pope John Paul II came to Ireland in 1979. It was the first time a reigning pontiff had visited the country and the nation went crazy. I was six. My father, my younger brother and my uncle Donal drove to Limerick to see him, along with about 300,000 other people. He faced a similar-sized crowd in Galway, and filled the Phoenix Park in Dublin with nearly a million people, by some estimates. This in a country of about three and a half million people. I went to bed at six o’clock the night before and my father woke me up at midnight. I was put in charge of the torch. We drove up to the Northside to pick up my uncle. Then we hit the road at about half one in the morning, along with most of the rest of Munster. There were helicopters overhead, monitoring the traffic. It was the first time Radio 2 broadcast all the way through the night. It’s sixty five miles from Cork to Limerick. We parked the car a mile or so from the Mass site at about seven o’clock in the morning. Then we got out ...

Season Pass
Because of my recent Tivo adventures, I've had to re-enter my season passes twice. Since I wrote it down the second time, I figured I might as well post it, in the form of micro-reviews. "jwz uses and endorses television." Things I Unashamedly Enjoy: Galactica -- some of the best science fiction ever on TV. It took a while for the initial miniseries to grab me, but the weeklies have been consistently great. I was worried that they were going to go to a very dumb place with the human-form Cylons, but they went to a really good place instead. Carnivàle -- After Galactica, this is my favorite show at the moment. The first season was fun but somewhat incomprehensible, since it moved very slowly. The second season has picked up the pace a lot. Clancy Brown is what makes it; that guy is terrifying. Lost -- It took me a while to "get" this show. From the first few episodes, I had a totally wrong idea of what the show was about. I thought it was about "how do you make fire, and what's that ...

RIP: Pope John Paul II
And so the servant goes to be with his master. When Pope John Paul II was elected in 1978, the world was a different place. Developments with a profound economic impact includes globalization and the democratization of Eastern Europe. Few significant changes are the result of a single man, but as the most widely traveled pope and as the first Slavic pope, John Paul II certainly represented these changes, and I suspect that history will show that he was indeed instrumental in much of the change. May his soul and the soul of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. (Read the rest of RIP: Pope John Paul II (~126 words).)

Google does it once again
Last year, Google shook the internet news sites and blogging community. Was it possible they had 2 pranks? Both seemed too much to imagine. A lunar based office, and a 1 GB storage email service named Gmail. The talk was of copyrights and trademarks after the announcement of last April 1st, people completely debunking the possibility as too much to imagine, too much to be real. They ended up revolutionalizing the free web based mail market. On the 1st of this year, Google seems to have topped themselves. I am not sure what their true prank was(GoogleGulp), but their announcement that they will double the space available under their Gmail email service in honor of it's 1 year birthday and official launch is only toped by their promise 'to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs'. Happy 1st year, Gmail.

Thoughts on John Paul II
There are thousands of Catholics in Iraq, and the death of Pope is affecting them deeply. Already feeling under siege and driven from their native land, the death of a man who tried to bridge the differences all the Abrahamic faiths is yet another blow to be endured.
