Getting home from PyCon 2005
I think I've recovered enough from the trip home to write about it. I suppose I should just accept that this is going to be an annual ritual. Our car trip from GWU to Dulles was reasonably speedy -- we only made a few minor wrong turns, and we learned a few things about Washington D.C. from bear, who seems to know something about everything. So we arrived at Dulles with plenty of time to spare, made our way through security without any problems, and walked to Concourse B, which is where all of us were flying out of. PJE and I were flying from adjacent gates, and Alec was flying from a gate down the hall a bit. I was originally schedule to fly from Dulles to Pittsburgh on United/US Airways Express and then pickup a United flight from Pittsburgh to Seattle. The problem arose when the US Airways flight was cancelled due to mechanical trouble. The agents at the gate immediately got to work at trying to get people onto flights. There was a Dulles to Chicago to Seattle flight which the ...

Steve Maine on Indigo Duplex Contracts
Steve Maine of Brain.Save() has done a really good job on the description of a set of duplex contracts in Indigo, i.e. those contracts where callbacks are specified, using the design of a multi-player game of blackjack. Steve shows the service contract interfaces, a bunch of the messaging code and even what's on the wire. Recommended.

More on Structured Blogging
I've had a few days to think more about structured blogging; not so much the overall concept, per se, as I've been a proponent of that for a while, but on the current proposed implementation. I'm happy to say that I'm pretty satisfied with the initial work that has been done, and I think it's a good starting point for SB to take off. As I mentioned earlier, one of the main issues I wanted to digest was, where does this metadata go? My initial inclination was, of course, to insist that the data go in the RSS feed; although the primary intention of RSS is syndication, many have seized upon the idea that the RSS represents a quite-usable structured version of what would otherwise be unstructured and somewhat unreliable data. There's a few problems with this however. Blogs have come a long way in terms of the XML-ization of their content, but an item on a feed is still a transient entity. As it currently stands, I know of no system that, by default, creates either an RSS or Atom ...

Getting our Mojo at Yahoo? Yeah. And some new DNA too.
I've seen numerous folks commenting on Om Malik's recent posting about Yahoo: How Yahoo Got Its Mojo Back. In it he credits several things (including me and Russell--thanks Om!) for a resurgence of interest and appreciation for what we've been doing these last months. And what it also has a couple of guys, I like to call them blog evangelists, who knowingly or not, have brought the right kind of attention to the company. Russell Beattie who recently joined Yahoo...

*laugh* iPodding seriously damages your chances of getting laid. Amazing shots
Wow. While I was right about my equipment being next to nothing compared to the others, even the person with what looked like a Canon Point and Shoot had a better camera than me I suspect, I still had a lot of fun. I took about 200 shots, a lot of them were 'take 10 shots to get the right one' type shots, most of which didn't last on the camera. We hit The Forks, 5 of us in all, and took shots of 4 major areas. We took from the parkade, from the observation deck, down below by the skating rink, and then we drove over to the St. Boniface Cathedral and took some shots of that with the setting sun casting it's last few rays on it. Sadly, with the setting sun I had no choice but to use the tripod, and a lot of the side shots had horrible tilts. As far as equipment, we had 3 Nikons in our group, I think 2 Canons, and my lowly little Fuji. Dan brought 2 Nikons, and with his fisheye lens took some amazing shots, including one of the other 4 of us looking like we were standing around the ...

Win for the little guy - not really
I just spend several hours reading this.In theory, it's a how-to guide of how to defend yourself against claims of copyright infringement and cybersquatting. In reality, it's a discouraging account of 150-some versions of legal paperwork required to dismiss what was never a case. If Hank hadn't had an incredible lawyer working for free for him, he would have either had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to defend actions that are legal - or he would have lost and had to pay much money to a bunch of not very nice people. In either case - the big companies win, and the local person who writes a website loses. I'm particularly discouraged by what the judge wrote - if you aren't qualified to hear a case, you should remove yourself from it.
