Spim and interoperability
Stowe writes about an InternetWeek story on spim interop. I thought I'd point out a couple of things in our approach that help to alleviate spim, even though we're all about interoperability. Takes work to fake from addresses. With server-to-server (S2S) dialback, you get some limited spoof-protection, but with S2S TLS, you have a shot at keeping out the fakers. Block communications from unwanted sources, including people not in your roster. Being able to trust your addressing scheme is an imperative pre-requisite for this. Karma. This is an implementation detail, but configurable rate limiting helps prevent some of the DoS attacks. Many places to plug in Bayesian filtering, both server-side and client-side. If you think of other anti-spim approaches you want in your IM system, let me know, and we can work together to figure out how to include it.

Watching Games
Just committed to my archive: spectator support! Monopd now supports players to watch games in progress - if the players who are playing allow it. This should simplify looking for players to play with, since you can talk to players currently playing and play a new game when they're done! As you might have noticed, the download page has been changed a little bit: CVS is no longer the location where primary development takes place. Up-to-date development code for the project can now be found in my GNU arch archive. If you notice any references to SourceForge CVS, please contact me so I update them and point users to the correct locations for bleeding edge code.

One of Miles' toys (a rat puppet that ducks down into a conical hiding place via attached dowel). First image ever shot with the new phonecam. Posted to MT via mfop2. Word is that MT Pro will have moblogging ability, but we wait .......

Whine and Ye Shall Receive
iCal 1.5.2 came out on Monday and includes a number of new features. Most notably (and surprising) to me, Apple has vastly improved iCal's Info inspector. I went off on a bit of a rant when they started using the drawer back in October. My main gripe was that the window couldn't be maximized properly since the drawer wasn't factored into the width. Moreover, revealing the drawer on an already maximized window would cause it to be displayed off the screen. Both of these problems and more are fixed in the new version.First, the green button does what you'd expect. If you've got a non-maximized window with the Info drawer revealed, the green maximize button takes the drawer into account and makes the iCal window the proper width. Second, revealing the drawer does what you'd expect. If you've got a maximized window and you reveal the Info drawer, the iCal window resizes so both are visible. Third, (surprisingly) if you still loathe the drawer you can tell it where to stick it and ...

Arguments have consequences
Roe v. Wade turns 31 today. Though you rarely find commentary that sheds more light than heat on the subject, here is an article that does: Liberty, Logic & Abortion by journalist Mark Goldblatt. I don't agree with all of his conclusions, but I think he offers constructive criticism of arguments on both sides of the issue. For example, take the argument that abortion should be legal because "a woman has the right to control her own body." Goldblatt responds: ...it's simply untrue that American citizens, male or female, exercise absolute sovereignty over their own bodies. If that were the case, not only would 49 states have to join Nevada in the legalization of prostitution, they would also have to permit the selling of internal organs for transplant—which would in turn warrant the bodily exploitation of poor people by wealthy people. The implications of the "absolute sovereignty" argument can easily be multiplied. It would also sanction selling yourself into slavery and agreeing to ...

Novell's Alternative to System.DirectoryServices
Novel has released a .NET based library for LDAP operations [1]. Unlike Microsoft's implementation, this is pure managed code, so you won't have to deal with those amazingly informative “Error 0x85000000“ errors that Microsoft's Win32 API wrappers in the System.DirectoryServices namespace love to give you. Some cool features in there too, like async support. And I must also mention, that you can also download the complete C# source.
