"NOCHE BUENA".....A Christmas Filipino Gathering!
As Christmas Eve is approaching, being a Roman Catholic and being from the Philippines (who's people consider Christmas Holiday as a very important holiday celebration), I am very much excited and very enthusiastic to welcome the celebration to commemorate the "Nativity". I can't resist but to tell you how Filipinos celebrates the Eve of Christmas.....One the Eve of Christmas, most of the people awaits the celebration of the midnight mass, called the "Misa de Aguinaldo" (Gift Mass). Usually, this mass is to commemorate the "Birth of Jesus Christ". This mass is followed by a very important family/relative gathering called the "Noche Buena". This is the time where family members could savor the yuletide favorites like the "queso de bola" (ripened ball cheese), "relleno" (stuffed chicken), "hamon" (ham), and "castanas" (roasted chesnuts). It is the night considered by most Filipinos as "a good night and not a night for sleeping."May this Christmas Holiday gives us the spirit of joy, ...

Stateful Failover on Open Source Firewalls
I finally got around to reading a URL that Neil Blakey-Milner posted to me a couple of days back. OpenBSD has committed changed to its development branch to share firewall state information between two boxes, over a network interface. This is something quite near and dear to myself, and probably Neil as well. During our stint at iTouch we were responsible for developing the group standard firewall platform - a fun filled three weeks hacking up a standard FreeBSD install and adding some needed customisations. All was good, but the nay-sayers refused to accept the offer completely due to its lack of automated failover. The problem of automated failover is actually quite a bit more complicated that it first appears, particularly in the environment we were operating in using NAT. We did come up with a proof of concept solution with BSD, using a combination of some nasty shell scripts and a modified VRRP daemon. This actually worked reasonably well, in 3 of the four possible cases ...

More Wally World Madness
To quote Walt Kelly's Pogo - "We have met the enemy and they is us!" How many folks are aware that Wal-Mart Corp. alone is responsible for nearly 10% of the US trade deficit? Wal-Mart rollout - or rollback?. The Inglewood community is resisting the retail giant's expansion in California. [Christian Science Monitor | Top Stories]

It's Here
This could actually be good news for us. Our cows are safe - we don't feed them ground up downer sheep, as is the common practice in large feedlots! But it'll be bad for the beef industry as a whole, no doubt. We'll have to see how this shakes out... First Suspected U.S. Case of Mad Cow Disease Under Investigation. The first-ever U.S. case of mad cow disease is suspected in a single cow in Washington state, but the American food supply is safe, the agriculture secretary said. By The Associated Press. Moving News
Whew! I completed a major redesign of haxton.org today - in preparation to mving the blog over there. Figured I'd take the opportunity to get rid of some of the darkness hanging around - lightened the backgrounds, redid the menus, added all my stories from here to there. I also made it back thru November putting titles on these posts to make indexing in Blosxom easier. What a royal pain! The only time Radio uses titles is in the RSS feed - otherwise they're ignored. Blosxom depends on titles to build it's indices - hence the problem. The export tool by Andy Fragen is quite useful - not perfect, but very, very appreciated! I also managed to get AmphetaDesk running on the Big Mac as a daemon (of sorts). Hacked a little Perl - I'm no Perl God, but I am getting fairly proficient at hacking on Perl sources. Now I gotta do a bit of hacking to get a "post" button for the blasted thing operating, and a bit more to get an automatic "upstreaming" function for my new setup. Lot's to do, but ...

Seth Finkelstein on Censorware, Copyright and Blogs
(SOURCE:GrepLaw | Seth Finkelstein on Censorware, Copyright and Blogs)- Wow! A must read. Read the whole post for more great insight. QUOTE # Which are the most important anticensorship projects in the loop today? The Google cache. I mean that very seriously. What caused the most outcry when censored by China? By Iran? None other than Google. That should tell you something. It's considered a serious threat. In my view, an important anticensorship effort needs to have two qualities: a) It must be usable by ordinary people and b) They have to want to use it. Most proposed ideas fail one of these two criteria. Nobody besides very technical people can use it, or would even want to. In contrast, the Google cache is literally one click, and provides a very useful service. Moreover, such utility means governments have a harder time suppressing the service, because then there's a backlash from respectable people within their own societies. It creates pressure towards a more open society, ...

Village Voice film poll
The Village Voice has its hihgly heralded annual film poll out today. Some good stuff on there, but it takes a great big shit on itself at the top. The dissappointing and unrealized Lost in Translation first, and probably the worst "major" film of the year, Elephant, second. Blech! These people are trying way too hard to impress someone. Elephant, especially. A film only a fake film poser could love.

FarPlates
You know that car game where you look at all the license plates going by and you have to come up with a word using all the letters in order? (Okay, now show of hands for the people who didn't learn it from me.) I got bored with that and started looking for letters that could make the names of characters in books and movies. Then I got bored with that and made it that I had to see at least two from the same source at once. I used to see them all the time, and now I hardly ever do. Then again, I was living at home when I came up with this and my mom's minivan ended up with plate letters EGW, so every time I was in that car I automatically had one plate for The Wheel of Time. So anyway. There was next to no traffic on the commute to work this morning, and we were pacing a beat-up little black car with a blue-and-yellow plate starting with 2AEY. It took me a second to register that I could spell Aeryn with that (kind of disappointing reaction time, but LOTR outranks Farscape in my ...
