A job I want; a job I never had.

Regular expressions are beautifully ugly
For several years, I've been unable to find a suitable Web server log statistics program for this server, which hosts several dozen virtual domains for myself and a few friends and relatives. The commercial options such as WebTrends and Wusage cost more than I want to pay for a server-wide solution. The open-source and free-beer programs I have found are either skimpy on stats or can't handle sites that get millions of hits a year. I've decided to write my own program in Java, a project I'm naming Logfreak. The initial goal is to write an application and class library that can read logs in Apache common and combined log formats and store statistics in a JDBC or ODBC database. Once that works, the stats can be retrieved for presentation on a JavaServer Pages or PHP front end. The first thing I've learned is that I'll never deal with text again without using regular expressions. It isn't pretty to look at a pattern matching expression like this: ...

Quite possibly the best opening lines of any appellate case come in the Ninth Circuit's Elvis Presley Enterprises, Inc. v. Passport Video: "The King is dead. His legacy, and those who wish to profit from it, remain very much alive."...

Community and Collaboratory Tools
Over in BlueOxen land EugeneEricKim, to inspire discussion, has inquired why we think we need better collaboration. I went off to think about this, and ended up with an answer that is a bit tangential but relevant. It's about what I might like to do with Community and Collaboration oriented tools. The needs they might satisfy. We'll see where this goes.

Webber backs Klien.
According to Mark Webber, sponsorship money isn’t the only thing that got Klien a Jaguar Race seat.....but, naturally, it helped.

... In our early years, we in the field of software development learned a great deal about software design and structure. It is time, and we are ready now, to make and keep schedule commitments, well-planned "big upfront designed" specifications, and project budgets. How can we be sure it's time now? By observing how silly our excuses for not doing these things have become.

Backyard birds
We have numerous sparrows in the yard and a pair of cardinals have lived in the pine tree in the front yard for several years. The chickadees have all but disappeared and there are fewer crows than in previous years. A while ago, we had a woodpecker menacing the birch tree in the backyard and there are always some grackles eating the birdseed out back. Maybe next summer we will have a greater variety of birds with the new plants we're planning on putting in.

Morning Plaza Mitsuyuki was back from his trip to Italy and he brought us some delicious chocolates. Miho went to Finding Nemo. Kaori was happy because her husband gave her a dishwasher. We talked about different types of movies and if you want to read about movies there are a lot of good sites on the web. You can go to one with many reviews or directly to the offical site of the movie. You can also find sites for your favorite actor or actress. The homework for next is to write seven sentences using the information you got from your partner. The winter vacation homework is to do the review exercises. I will see you in January.

Is Froogle An Affiliate Killer?
Urgent notice to all affiliates.... Beware of Froogle! I am starting to see Froogle results listed at the top of Google for random product searches. What does this mean to affiliates? It means you are in for some pain in the near future! Here's how it works:Froogle goes out and grabs web pages that include products for sale. It grabs the product description, the price, and a photo of the items listed on the pages it finds. It then indexes all of these items into a massive, searchable database. You can search for just about any item and come up with several choices at different price points from many different sellers. So far, this is a pretty neat way to find an item you are looking to buy. The trouble for affiliates comes when Froogle listings start being shown at the top of the Google search results. The Froogle listings are right up at the very top of the 1st page of search results...way above any affiliate listings you may have achieved in Google. See the problem? Buyers will ...

Audio mugshots.
Long story short:moonchyld1 is walking friends home. Group of people across the street yells at her group of people. Her group yells back. Second group follows first group in their car, eventually getting out, beating them and stealing phones/purses/etc.The twist? She was in the middle of a (rather drunken) LJ phone post at the time. Her phone stayed connected through the entire event. Give it a listen.
