Went to Future Shop and got myself at Belkin USB Sync-charger cable for my Palm Z71. I have travel adapters for my iBook, so I plan to use it to charge everything else. I'll charge the Palm over USB, and I'll charge the rechargeable NiMH batteries for my camera over USB as well. Yeah, then I went to badminton. I'm not too pleased with how insecurely the charger cable plugs into the Palm. Doesn't take much force to make it disconnect.

Mind Space has continually gone through changes. After all, it's all about the undulating waves, the patterns that play throughout and within. This is a great time to get involved with making this site, and the community in general, a more human-friendly, inter-connected, compassionate, and evolving ways. Think of the the Universe jumping up and clicking its heels. We need people like you who want to share their ideas. We're setting this up totally on voluntary time, and next-to-no budget....

Anti-Anti-Idiotarianism. Joe Katzman cheerfully avoids the discomfort of actually having to answer the question I posed: exactly how big is the "big tent" of Idiotarianism?"Leftists" in universities wink at Jihadists in the same way that "Rightists" at CCC meetings wink at cross burners. You (the collective you) draw connections where they don't exist. Can a female university student believe that Palestinians have a legitimate cause, as a people? Not in Katzman's world: her belief structure means she is a "feminazi", an "islamofascist", an "anti-semite", an "animal rights nazi"... you get the idea. But there's more! She's also "hostile to rational thought", "winking at jihadists", an an apologist for murder, to boot! Wow, that's a lot of evil in one little girl. Who knew? All I say is she thinks the Palestinians might have a point. But your dots become fully connected, defensively, instantly...And yes, Joe, filling a few paragraphs fifty percent full of insult and bluster cheapens ...

I've only worked with MySQL a little bit, so I'm not yet comfortable using it for data warehousing. I'll be researching Open Source databases in a lot more detail this spring in advance of a few conferences, with the goal of pumping some large volumes of data into them to see how they handle the usual range of business intelligence tasks. Expect a spate of magazine articles come mid-summer on the results, assuming my hardware is set up in time. While catching up on some reading I came across this useful page about some of the more annoying features of MySQL. The author doesn't treat these as bugs since they are mostly documented and designed-in behavior. For example:If no DEFAULT value is specified for a column, MySQL automatically assigns one, as follows. If the column may take NULL as a value, the default value is NULL. If the column is declared as NOT NULL, the default value depends on the column type: (...)I did not realize that MySQL's treatment of NULL values was as strange as ...

I installed Fedora Core 1 this evening. My CD Writer has apparently died so I had to do an install off my hard drive. Thankfully everything went smoothly. Having entirely skipped Red Hat 9 I was pretty impressed with the change from Red Hat 8 to Fedora Core 1. After the install was finished, within minutes I was adding a few sources to my apt and yum lists (yes, FC supports apt and yum repositories) and installing tons of extra goodies. In the process of intentionally deleting my old GNOME config (to get a clean slate) I accidentally deleted all my epiphany bookmarks. Oh well, now I get to start with a clean slate there too. Here are a couple screenshots of my Fedora Core 1 desktop: using up2date browsing and chatting Overall, I'm quite pleased. I think I'll be sticking with this at least until Novell SUSE + Ximian Desktop comes out (at which point I'll have to try that).

Things got pretty exciting in the Linux world recently, when the Debian Linux distribution announced that a cracker had broken in to four debian.org machines, escalated privileges to root, and installed rootkits on several of the servers. The method? The cracker used keylogging software to sniff the password of a user authorized to log in to one of the servers on Wednesday, 19 November 2003, then logged in and took advantage of a vulnerability in the Linux kernel to escalate to root. After that, it was a short time before the other machines were compromised as well. Further details about the exploit are available in a number of places, including Linux Today and wiggy.net. Let's cut to the question many readers probably have: if you use Linux, should you be worried? [read the whole article by S. Granneman at SecurityFocus]
