5E
It was a lonely, lonely night. Kazue was the only person to show up tonight, but she wasn't able to get here before 8:50. We did talk about professional sports in Japan and the US. She likes to plays sports, but isn't really a fan of any professional team. I am pretty much the same now. When I was younger I used to follow professional sports much more. How about the rest of you? Are any of you a fan of a professional team?

The IMS Abstract Framework (IAF) Review Presentation provides information about the IMS Abstract Framework, which is a device to enable the IMS to describe the context within which it will continue to develop its eLearning technology specifications. This framework is not an attempt to define the IMS architecture, rather it is a mechanism to define the set of services for which IMS may or may not produce a set of interoperability specifications. My family belongs to a, well, let's call it a health club. They have racquetball courts, basketball courts, weights, pool, etc. This club hosts a basketball league for grades 6 and under since they are not handled by the school. Great. A nice community service. There's been some trouble in the past with hiring quality referees but they raised the fees for joining the league to cover bringing more and better refs. I'm fine with that also. In the past they've had trouble keeping non-members from showing up and sneaking from the basketball area into the rest of the facility and generally behaving as though they had a free Day Pass. They handled that this year by charging 1 dollar admission to the game. I'm not fine with this.

It's all in the WebPaths, baby... "From blogdex to Veen to del.icio.us to this wonderful search plug-in for IE mahvelous!" [jenett.radio] Give me a moment to think of a word to write other than "WOW!" Click on the last link in Joe's post if you are a Windows + Internet Explorer user and you like searching library catalogs. While there are several pre-configured search engines available at the site, the Searchy plug-in turns out to be another pipeline into online catalogs that sits completely outside the library world. Like LibraryLookup, anyone can configure the plug-in to work with any OPAC that allows the appropriate type of search strings, and the site even provides a Plug-in Generator. For example, I played around with SWAN's keyword search and created a registry plug-in that allows me to type searches directly into the address bar in IE. After installing it, I can now type "sk celtic music" and the results of the search in SWAN load in the browser window. In fact, I just ...

The NYT has an article, New Economy: Markets Shaped by Consumers, about how consumers shape markets in a more direct sense than is often appreciated. An unmet demand, if its strong and left long enough, will creates its own supply. Eric von Hippel, a professor at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, argues that a huge swath of innovation can be traced to elite consumers whom he calls lead users. These imaginative and technically adept consumers spot a need and invent a solution, often changing whole industries, from sports to software. Mr. Von Hippel and...

1K Today Mineko was back and with a new hair style. It was Mai's last class today. She will be leaving for San Diego soon. We had a farewell lunch at Michinro after class. It was really fun, buty people weren't very interested in speaking English. This class really has a lot in common and can talk for hours. I had to go back to work, but everyone looked like they were going to be there for a few more hours. Too bad Akiko couldn't make it. In class today Kumiko and Junichi wanted to know a word to use for an all you can eat restaurant. One word you can use for that eating style is a smorgasbord or buffet. The homework for next week is the Language Check and cut out the cards on page 121. Make sure look them over and understand the meanings.

For the last couple of weeks I have been getting mildly depressed (varying, actually) at the utter futility of life. In my current belief system, it really is pointless. That takes the pressure off people to "succeed" or whatever, but it means that anything we do is without meaning and will not be worth anything. And there's nothing I can do about it. I suppose that's one of the purposes of religion; to induce a...
