The most frequently questioned answer in I.T.
The post on “the two most frequently asked questions in I.T.” gets a fair bit of traffic and is worth following up with an easy suggestion to try: If the most frequently asked question in I.T. is “How long will it take?” Then why not be proactive and post estimated or actual timeframes whenever you implement an app? Post your times to lists, forums, and newsgroups. Tell authors to post it next to the download link. Realistic timeframes. For installing and implementing every article, every component, every question on every public forum. “It took an hour.” “It took a day.” “It wasted three months of my life.” For me it means finding out how long it takes the average person to install and implement GenericDB (with worst/median/best results to be posted at the site). Or asking for feedback on how long it took to try any of the code I've blogged on. Sites like ASPAlliance, GotDotNet, or MSDN could set an example and start posting timeframes as well. One hell of a lot more useful than ...

Sirius Radio
After subscribing to XM Radio for the past two years, I have recently changed providers and moved to Sirius (because of their higher concentration of talk content, their commercial free music policy, and their embrace of the NBA and NHL (and hopefully the MLB). I got the Sirius S.R.S. by Audiovox device, which allows me to listen at home or in the car with the same subscription. So far it's been excellent, though the car kit is a bit more ugly than the old XM setup, since it was do it yourself. Things have gotten a lot easier in the Sat. Radio market; I was able to purchase the whole kit for $149 from Best Buy and walk out and install it myself. When I signed up for XM two years ago, the new service required the seperate purchase of an antenna, a box under my seat, and a tuner device, and cost quite a bit of money....

Final Warning - Site Build It Price Increases December 10th
Site Build It will be increasing the price of their all-in-one website creation and management tool on December 10. I have received several emails warning me of the increase, and wanted to let you know so that you don't get burned. Right now, you can buy a site that has more power than you could ever imagine for only $299 per year. After the increase, the price will be going up to $499 per year - you can save $200 PER YEAR by acting quickly! The good people at SBI are allowing people to buy all the sites you want right now at the $299 annual price. Don't worry, you don't have to start building them all at once! You can buy 4 sites, register the domain for only one of them, and the other 3 will just "sit on the shelf" until you actually "start them up" by registering the domain name. Remember, you can buy the sites now but the clock does not start ticking on your annual cycle until you actually register the domain names. You can "store away" the sites you don't have time to build ...

Dawn
To fellow bloggers: It's been only a few days since I started this weblog, and I've had a lot of fun both in putting up the technical part and in starting to write. I've now learned the basics, adapted my scripts and made an RSS feed available ; still on my to-do list: write and integrate a XML:RPC ping mechanism to Technorati and weblogs.com (other ones I should know?) and look at how trackbacks work. I didn't know what RDF meant at the beginning of the week, so I've learned a lot on the way, but the road is still long: tips and ideas to get this new weblog off the ground (without relying on existing blogging software), as well as comments on the contents, would be highly appreciated! The way this started is very similar to how this picture was born, in September this year during a climbing expedition in Nepal: When I woke up before daybreak to satisfy some basic natural needs, once out of the tent I realised that the conditions for a picture I had imagined (clear night, full moon ...

Time for prudence
