Odds and ends that ya find in yer mailbox
I checked my mailbox to find one of those notes from Canada Post: I've got a package waiting for pickup, and a $17 fee to pay in charges. I bet it's my sleeping bag! Finally! I can pick it up tomorrow and try it out before my trip this weekend. The other day (actually, I think it was last Saturday), I was driving along Laurier towards the Nicholas expressway ramp to the 417, and noticed that the Laurier bridge reconstruction had finally completed! Today, there was a flyer in the mail from the city (or was it the National Capital Commission? Who knows... there are something like 4 or 5 levels of government in this city and each has jurisdiction over different parts of some common things) announcing the end of the bridge reconstruction, and detailing all the improvements made to the bridge. The width of the bridge has more than doubled, and there is now more than enough space for cyclists, pedestrians, and cars to share. It's like a brand new bridge! And, it's about f*cking time, ...

The phone system’s value needs to be enhanced by integration with social software.
(SOURCE:Telepocalypse: Telecom theory via E Land)- Amen! Bring it on! Integrate Skype, audio blogging, etc. QUOTETelcos do a lousy job of managing “inspiration to communicate”. American Express send me an endless stream of offers with inspiration to spend. My nameless telco suppliers never suggest now is a great time to call to my mum or message my boss. So this suggests a change of emphasis. For instance, social software is clearly targeted at inspiring communications events. The phone system’s value needs to be enhanced by integration with social software. I’ll go into this in more depth another day. Funnily enough, BT used to have an advertising campaign based on “It’s Good to Talk”, essentially trying to promote phone calling as a passtime and stimulate demand. I think we can do better! Users need ongoing inspiration to communicate until the pipes are completely full. UNQUOTE

4L Only Naoko today. Last week Atsuko mentioned she would be absent because she had to go to her children's school. I don't know about Keiko, but Naoko was hoping that she would show up. We checked the homework and talked a little about it compound adjectives. Using these words makes your English much more interesting. Try to use them the next time in class.

Losing the Internet
The Internet is in danger. Apparently you can take over the Internet in your spare time and viruses and worms are getting nastier thanks in no small part to skewed economics and crooked business practices as well as shameful technological regressions. And eventually the Internet will have nothing to do with what its name stands for.

Who Owns the Alphabet?
Here is a very interesting study on the alphabet and their owners, according to Google. Why in the world does Netscape appear first in the search results for the word 'X'! Ok, GNU comes up first for N because "GNU's Not Unix" Speaking about the GNU, you probably already know about these funky abbreviations for Unix terms, such as: PINE: Pine Is Not Elm GNU: GNU is Not Unix WINE: Wine Is Not an Emulator and many more!

Morning Plaza Mihoko and Karou were both traveling last week, but no postcards. :( Karou went to Kyushu (I am going tomorrow.) and Mihoko went to New York. I didn't have a chance to talk to her today, but maybe next week we can get more details. The chocolate she brought was great. We practiced ordering food in a restaurant and in the last practice Mamiko's group were some tough customers. The homework for next week is to remember what you order in a restaurant. We will use the information at the beginning of the class.

Time Flies
Speaking of times pass, what a day that was one year ago today (well, yesterday, as of nine minutes ago), filled with such hope and possibility... Lindsey, who is in town from New York, and I went to see 21 Grams, one of the most amazing films I've seen in ages, and one of the saddest as well. Oscar caliber from direction to cinematography, the acting and supporting acting, all spectacular. Go see it. Today, I have a lot to be grateful for; my mother, friends returning home for the holidays, a safe warm place to live, a positive attitude, and more than I could ever dreamed possible. Happy Thanksgiving.

Update Area Code 1.1
Update Area Codes -- by Allen Watson (Based on an original script by David Cortright)<P> Area codes do change sometimes. This script will walk through your Entourage Address Book, finding all the phone numbers whose area code is "123", changing them to "456" (you specify the numbers, of course). It looks at each type of phone number in turn--home phone, business phone, fax phone, and so on. When it finds a match on the old area code, it (optionally) displays the name or company it has found with the old and new numbers, and lets you choose whether or not to apply the proposed change.<P> Self-contained, no scripting additions required. Tested on OS X 10.3.1 (Panther); should work on early versions of OS X but not guaranteed. <P> <B>NOTE:</B> The script first does a fast but "fuzzy" match, finding all contacts whose telephone number contains the area code. That means that searching for "212" would match a phone number like "914-555-1212" as well as "212-555-3456". It briefly reports ...

Grrr
Gray, think you could send mom more cookies? The two-legged pig has decided that since he didn't get to go to Thanksgiving dinner, and no one begged him a plate of turkey, it was his right to eat every damn cookie you sent. And yes, smothering his selfish ass with his pillow tonight has crossed my mind.

Outlook Not Responding yet again.
This is really starting to annoy me. Every couple of days or so I'll try to bring Outlook up where it's nicely minimized in the system tray and when I do I get the lovely Outlook is not responding error message. So first of all, the wording on the error message stinks. I don't use Exchange server so that information is irrelevant to me. But there's no way out of this loop unless you use task manager and kill the process. I've got this nice little quick launch shortcut that launches “%windir%\System32\taskkill.exe /IM explorer.exe /F”. I'm thinking I might need another one that kills outlook.exe too. Wouldn't the smart thing be to have a Close Outlook option? The next time I bring up Outlook is should tell me what the hell went wrong and why it stopped responding. I've viewed my logs and can't find anything useful. I know it's not NewsGator because it did this plenty before I installed that. Here's hoping this will get changed for Outlook 12, it's one of the very few nuisances in ...
