My Dad sent email reminding me of several things I had to do... things I'd already taken care of.visa for travel to Australia (ETA)collect frequent flyer mileage for the big tripetc.Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, done that, already done that... Booked the hotel for the ComputerFest trip this weekend. Trying the Staybridge Suites in Markham this time. I was surprised to find that a low rate was still available at this late date, but of course there are restrictions: this reservation must be prepaid in full, and it cannot be changed or canceled. Well, I booked the room, and my credit card has been charged, so I'm definitely committed to going on this trip. The best thing about the room is that it's got two double beds and a pull-out sofabed in the living room. That means that the guy who smokes can indulge his nicotine addiction in a separate room without bothering the rest of us. The invoice also makes a point of mentioning high-speed internet access. Hmm... I guess we'll find out ...

By now, I'm sure most of you have heard of the "spam rage" incident in which a guy threatened to kill and/or torture people working at a company that was sending him spam. Naturally, a lot of people have mixed feelings about this; although the ice pick and anthrax threats were a bit over the top, many identify with the guy's anger (this Samizdata post and associated comments provide a good example). Those who think the solution to every problem is another law will be gratified to know that Congress just approved an anti-spam bill. One has to imagine, given that such proposals had been languishing for six years, that the "spam rage" incident may have had some impact on the bill's passage. Of course, I'm highly cynical of anti-spam legislation for several reasons. First, because any time any form is speech is regulated, it makes me nervous. Though I find panhandlers, street-corner preachers and billboards annoying, I don't think they're doing anything fundamentally wrong and I'm not ...

5E Zenta called before class to say he had a business trip to Sapporo, so he had to miss class. He will also have to go to Kitami next week, so he will be doing some make up classes. Miyuki was back tonight. She has been very busy. It was good she was here toinght because we talked about basketball-- her favorite sport. Of course, we talked about women's basketball. The women's game is getting more popular and know some people find it more exciting the men's because it is less physical. There is less pushing and shoving and a lot more movement. I have never seen a women's pro game, but I would like to someday. From the leagues website it looks like they are still going strong.

Want to know where Storm is today? If he'll be on the mountain, or which mountain you can find him at? Well now you can! We'll announce Storm's location just below his picture in the right hand column on this page on all his training and regularly scheduled duty days. Due to the nature of Search and Rescue, it may not always be possible to announce if Storm is participating in a real Search and/or Rescue while that mission is in progress; but we'll do our best to report back after the fact, if it's possible for us to do...

I feel like I'm drowning in fun new stuff. The headphones showed up today, and they have a very nice crisp sound, though they'll take some getting used to. And I'm in love with Speakerboxx* (especially "The Way You Move," which I will forever associate with my first night at Toad's...). A guy in line for Toad's Friday (a night on which we were unable to get in...damn them) tried to convince me that The Love Below was the superior album, but I'm always partial to albums that make good running soundtracks. Speaking of running, I finally went to Marathon Sports, which I should have done a long time ago. The nice man looked at my terribly pronating tendencies and hooked me up with a pair of compensatory Brooks. The difference is amazing. To round things out, I checked out new books from the library (having finished Kavalier & Clay a while back) and went glasses shopping (I'm being pushed in a rectangular plastic direction) and got most of my hair shaved off. In any case, I'm off to ...

Carol Coye Benson of Glenbrook Partners has a article, Liability and Federated Identity: Much Ado About Nothing on why Federated identity probably may not live up to expectations: they will likely never provide a basis for transferring liability for between the parties to an on-line transaction. But, as she points out, this probably won't matter. This is the thing I think most security wonks miss -- it's tilting windmills to try to make risks disappear or to transfer them all away. But this doesn't mean you can't do business. It just places a burden on you as the business manager...

1K Recently people have been slipping into Japanese more and more, so I started keeping track how often I heard Japanese. There were over 25 times today! And many times it was for things that you could easily say in English! Next week I will keep track again and see if you can do a better job. We finished up the Solo exercise and started Unit 9. In this unit we will be talking about the future. In the warm up part we talked about plans for winter vacation and no one is doing anything special. I didn't tell you that I am going to Alaska this winter vacation. I hope that I can see the northern lights. The homework for next week is to listen to the listening activity again and see how much more you can catch. Also listen to the About You section and answer the questions.
