Contribute! | Policy | PhilosophyAt our team meeting today, discussion about shuffling offices. Rank being equal, you get office perks strictly on the basis of how long you've been there. Due to space constraints, we are obliged now to double up. The boss was explaining the new configuration and how folks would be doubled up according to "... er ... what's the opposite of 'seniority'?" About four people at once offered the obvious: juniority.

Elf is much funnier than I would have guessed. The costumes and the setting make you think about Jim Carrey's How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but thankfully Elf is more like Tom Hanks' Big set in a Christmas context. Elf isn't really a "Christmas movie", it's just a comedy that is set in the mythology of Santa Claus. The main character Buddy (played by Will Ferrell) is a human boy adopted and raised by an Elf in Santa's work shop. As a grown man (of appearance only!) he travels to New York to find his Dad (James Caan) who never knew he was born. Dad is the typical Christmas movie anti hero, the grouch to be converted, and Buddy handles the job (of course) in a hilariously innocent way. The comedy has lots of laughs and makes very nice use of Buddy's elf upbringing. He may have been a disappointment in Santa's workshop, but he still picked up a lot of abilities that set him aside from your average adult regressed to the age of 10. Good work by writers and producers and excellent ...

I discovered Eric S. Raymond's blog today. ESR is a noted technology pundit and open-source advocate, and he apparently has many other interests, too. In this article, he notes the similiarities between the Nazi resistance at the end of World War Two with the current Iraq Baath party resistance. The reference to this article is particularly interesting, as it details...

(SOURCE:Burningbird: The Value of Human on a Humanless Web)- Shelley pens another magnificent piece on the semantic web; it's about the people and any technology that enhances the relationships between people is worthwhile; anything that doesn't should be questioned. Burningbird continues to be a must-read blog! As for people blogging and writing on their laptop at conferences, I write down stuff in real time at conferences for the people who are NOT at the conference. Writing for the people at the conference to use in real time is pointless I agree. QUOTEWe talk about how the Internet sees censorship as damage and routes around it. We sometimes forget, though, that it is people who act as routers in this case, not machines. We attend conferences because we want to experience the discussion in person. or at least, this is what we say, and I remember conferences and sitting in the back so that I could watch people's reactions to the words, or look into the speaker's eyes and see ...

Today one of my father-in-laws turned 5 followed by a zero. That is to say that if he were a dog and he lived this long he'd be in the Guiness book of whirled records (at what point will they upgrade to CD or MP3?). But he's not. Clair is a neat guy and a fabulous father-in-law. He likes golf and despite that he still works long hours. This is quite a feat since most people sho like g...

Today, I have been approached to help migrate a Zope based system to Drupal. After removing some superfluous contrib-modules, the main task was to transplant the 660 existing users to the new system. After some hassles it was possible to extract the user data in xml format. With only minimal effort a script was written and the site had 660 new users. The site in question is the drupalized my.gnus.org site. It caters for the Gnus user community. Gnus is a news- and mailreader that runs in Emacs and XEmacs. A quote from the my.gnus.org community about my.gnus.org and Drupal: «As it's a page dealing with the news and mail client whose features are a superset of those other clients offer we were looking for a CMS which offers us the same.»

Wasn't I supposed to grow up to be Jean Genet? I can't even remember his damn name. His book titles, those were easy: The Thief's Journal and Our Lady of the Flowers. Thank God for Amazon, so I didn't have to look like an asswipe asking, "Wasn't I supposed to grow up to be that French guy who wrote The Thief's Journal?" The truth is, I didn't even like The Thief's Journal, though I can't say I got more than half a dozen pages. I wanted to. Didn't quite know what to make of it, though. Wait! I know why it stuck with me. I decided that was exactly the book I wanted to write, only good. ("Heaven is exactly like where you are right now. Only much, much better.") I want to be the good Jean Genet. Or get good enough to understand Jean Genet, realize his brilliance and then transcend it. It took me a few tries to get Naked Lunch, and I did really enjoy it the second time through, but I never wanted to do that myself. Too ugly. Too vile. (Do I need a quickie recap on Jean Genet? The ...
