For The Fallen
They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Laurence Binyon (1869 - 1943)

Infinite Spire WTC Memorial
I'd like to thank Andy Oram for pointing out Brian McConnell's Infinite Spire design proposal for the World Trade Center Memorial in this post (O'Reilly Network). Although I didn't connect much with the Fallen Headstones idea, I really loved the Infinite Spire concept. It is very elegant both from an aesthetics and a mathematics point of view. I think the simplicity of the monument would have beautifully conveyed its solemn but hopeful message. The site has lots of details on how to implement the optical illusion, using geometry and texture. The references to antic Greek architecture are also very interesting....

Making tough decisions
My Western Australian operation is a mess. The manager I have over there was a fantastic sales rep and a all round good bloke. Unfortunately he isn't generating the results I am after. I don't think it is his fault as such, but he obviously isn't the right guy for the difficult job of turning that state around. So I have choices: Coach him through a turn around Find a new manager Shut down the operation and liquidate the stock over there Shut down the operation and freight the inventory to the east coast I haven't decided what to do yet, but I need a decision before the end of November. Whatever happens I also need to decide whether to do it myself or get my ...

Cross-strapping!
So, I’ve actually done something vaguely productive with arch now; namely put debootstrap into it, and hacked on cross-strapping support. Cross-strapping is basically inspired by the needs of the Hurd project, and more particularly the crosshurd package. Basically, in order to install a Debian GNU/Hurd system you have to boot up Linux, do partitioning and a partial install, then reboot into that partial install and finish it off. You can’t do the partitioning in Hurd, and you can’t get a functional Hurd system from Linux, so you have to do it in two stages. So naturally, that’s how debootstrap works now. The first stage can thus be executed on any Unixy platform, and just needs basic things like a POSIX sh, sed, wget and access to a Debian archive; and while the second stage does have to be run on the target host, it doesn’t require anything other than what the first stage has already setup. In fact, the procedure for completing the second stage install is just: chroot $TARGET ...

Religious Symbolism Of The Matrix Revolutions
There is a "vast Seraph-Winged conspiracy" against The Matrix Revolutions. The majority of the people I've talked to did not like the third sequel.

Go: The Lesson Continues
In Go, there are interdependent, concentric groupings of ever-expanding spheres of consideration that begin with the immediate concern and scale in layers of abstraction outward to encompass more comprehensive strategies involving the entire board.

WebFaces
WebFaces is a new, coming soon, visual RAD tool that we are developing to speed even further web application development. The tool is developed in the form of a plugin for the popular NetBeans and Sun One Studio IDEs. Initially based on TICL as the underlying UI framework, it will evolve together with TICL towards support of the upcoming JSF (Java Server Faces) specification. Hence the name WebFaces.

Neo Genesis Revangelions
Saw The Matrix: Revolutions yesterday after hearing almost nothing but bad press. We went in expecting nothing, so except for the crappy dialogue, it wasn't bad at all while we were watching it. Afterward, though, once there was time to digest everything in the context of a single movie as well as a trilogy, it was a different story. I'm not bashing it Kenneth-Turan style, but as a person who appreciates both style and substance, I found myself retrospectively disappointed. Those of you who've seen Evangelion will know exactly what the title is referring to. I'm not big on religious symbolism for its own sake, but if it serves a purpose, as it does in Evangelion, I'll go with it. There wasn't really a purpose in this beyond being messianic. I guess what ticks me off the most is that I can't stand the idea of Keanu Reeves as Jesus. Especially when the Trinity is out of the picture and what we've got left of the original advertised triad is an ancient Greek concept. Hell, even Niobe ...
