It's official: Vertical Horizon now has ten songs to their name that we've determined to be at least 75% appropriate for sci-fi, fantasy, or anime music videos. The only other band that comes close to this is the Wallflowers, with four. Don't ask me how they do this. We just watch (and occasionally read) stuff, then listen to songs, and the songs fit. Tuesdays, we go over for dinner and Farscape with Kelson's family. Scapers, get ready to wail: last night's program was "Self Inflicted Wounds." Both episodes. For non-Scapers, yes, it was as big an emotional wringer as you may have guessed. When we got home after a round of coffee and sympathy, I checked a hunch on the lyric sheet for the latest VH album, Go. Bingo--"Won't Go Away" has now officially joined the ranks of the video-able. At the risk of sounding like an IMDb summary, get the full list here...... In chronological order of idea solidification: 1. "Everything You Want," Babylon 5, Marcus and Ivanova. The first video idea ...

One problem, maybe the main one, with Tablet PCs today is the lack of ink-based applications. Microsoft's "Think in Ink" contests are definitely are great way to get more developer traction to the ink-enabled platforms. But my attempts at coding ink applications have led me to think that it'll take quite some time before rich ink applications flourish. More samples and articles demonstrating interesting techniques are needed to get developers to invest more effort in ink-specific challenges....

SocialText cofounder Ross Mayfield had one of the highest rated sessions at the ACC2003 conference. This is why I am very happy that he will make time in his busy schedule and lead us through the latest developments in the area of Social Software. No book to read this time (I know that that makes many of you happy :-) but check his blogs, worth a read independent of whether you have time on Friday the 21st or not: Many-to-many, Socialtext, Ross Mayfield. Instead of just talking about Social Software, we came up with the idea of using social software already leading to, during and may be even after the event. In reality we do use Social Software since the beginning with our Yahoo Group and the Futurist Salon Companion Weblog. This time we will add a couple more things, to give you the opportunity to use the tools and make up your own mind about how useful these are in what circumstances. First up: Public Mind a site created for demand aggregation. Harry Max is the founder and he ...

Tired of other filesharing communities such as Napster, Gnutella, and Scour Tired of Napster Clones in general Looking for something new Get ready to change the way you think about peertopeer filesharing. NeoModus' Direct Connect. offers a complete set of tools to locate any type of media. New Modus offers a windows explorer look and feel to share any type of media. It makes money through serving advertisement to the subscribers. I have heard very good reviews on their products; however, I haven't used them myself yet. They are based in Berkeley, CA.

The BBC reported today that a probe launched when I was around 5 years old has just reached the edge of our solar system. Voyager 1 is around 8.5 billion miles away from home, transmitting a signal of less that 1 millionth of a watt. More detail is up on the NASA website.

It isn't exactly project hell, but it's close. I've been to project hell several times. Being a connoisseur of the various circles of project hell, what I'm doing now is more like heck, with a few dalliances in the first two circles of hell. Thus, extracurricular blogging slowed down this month. The nice thing about my current project is that it has a long and involved history, much like the history of napalm, with it's deep roots in the combative use of combustion going back to Greek fire. The project's history stretches back to the dim recesses of an earlier age, at least from the perspective of the users and sponsors.I've never been on a data warehouse project that took more than a year to get from start to a usable application. The projects usually delivered a first release within 6-9 months, and the first deliverable was always usable. Until Project Speedbump. When Fred Brooks answered the question "How do projects get a year behind?" with "One day at a time" he had not yet ...

I disappeared. I know. Sorry. I was working on a freelance contract for a very large online service provider in the DC suburbs, and spending half the week in Reston, VA and half the week here, trying to catch up with myself as I went, and everything that wasn't basic life support functions fell by the wayside. Now I am back in New York, working for an agency whose offices I could, if necessary, walk home from without collapsing from exhaustion at the end of the trip (provided I'm wearing sensible shoes), and emerging from hibernation. What brought me out, blinking, into the sunshine, was this: death. Or the threat of it. Eddie Izzard has a routine where he says the Anglican Inquisition would have offered sinners not "repent, or death!" but "cake, or death?" Everyone of course would prefer cake. As would I. I would even prefer the threat of cake to the threat of death. The week began with a death threat against the marvelous Emily Nussbaum. You'd think by now people would have ...

Admittedly, that’s not what he’s trying to do when he says: People mumble about arch until they go use it for a while and realize it is about 3-5 years behind BK. Here’s what he was saying about BitKeeper four years ago, in 1999: The problem with most systems is that they don’t scale. They all work great for 1-5 developers. It doesn’t matter which one you choose. However, they all tend to fall apart when you have 1000 developers. Since we have experience in source management, having designed and implemented most of Sun’s TeamWare source management system, we are quite familiar with the scaling problem and feel that we can provide a better, more scalable and more reliable answer. We did it before, and this one is better. Without taking away from anything Larry was meaning to say, that still seems like pretty high praise for arch, to me.

This has been a busy week... And a strange one. I have been so busy with everything that I hardly have time to just sit and think. Monday at work I was running around doing the job of two, and On Tuesday I was asked to pick up a Third responsibility. There is no extra pay, and I suppose it will look good on my resume, but I think that it is wearing me down. I am starting to get gray hair... At first I did not pay too much attention to it, but It is starting to get pretty noticeable *sigh* My work week is now one where I am constantly busy, seriously constant workload. And I do not get a break because I keep on volunteering. I have also been working on the House, Planning life, and going to school.I need a vacation I think, and I need a little space. On those few times where I find myself with nothing to do, I play a videogame, or surf online, or write a journal entry (Like I am doing now).Tuesday... Sucked... I was doing this project at work, and finished around 9:25am, I normally ...

Last Friday was Halloween. We didn't celebrate it because we're fundamentalist killjoys. However, we did go up to Sherman where Jessica's cousin's family did celebrate it, and it was great fun watching the little ones get excited. It was not fun to see the 14 year old's doing Halloween. I think their parents should have said, "No, you're not 8 any more. Plus the odor from y...
