(SOURCE:McGee's Musings)- Social networking sites are great way to meet new people, but if they have a regularly updated blog or website that I like, then I always feel alot more comfortable meeting them face to face. QUOTE Rick skips over the importance of two to an excellent conversation. After almost two years of reading each other's blogs, several phone conversations, and multiple last-minute lunch cancellations, Rick and I finally managed to break bread together. We did indeed dive right into several conversations that were both challenging and entertaining. Something that would not be possible, by the way, simply as a side effect of several of the various networking websites such as Ryze or LinkedIn. While these sites may have a role to play, the picture you can build of someone on the basis of following their blog on a sustained basis (preferably in your aggregator) is not something that can be replaced by the dry recitation of resume tidbits and interests that make up the ...

Nick from CodeMonkeyX.net has reviewed Drupal 4.3.0: Drupal is an extremely powerful website platform. It can be used to create a wide variety of websites, and can be highly customized. This power comes at the price of some ease of use for the webmaster, but is well worth the time it takes to become familiar with the system. Read the complete review on his new Drupal website.

Interesting story, Steve. Sounds fairly similar to that of another programming collective I know, but I'll leave that to another day. Here I just want to say that you should look into the LLP (Limited Liability Partnership) structure for your company. It is a very flexible structure, managed by a member agreement that can be freely designed by the members (much like a normal partnership). See http://www.startinbusiness.co.uk/features/ch_260301_llpforms.htm

With the PDC behind us, Whidbey is public, as are a lot of details about the .NET Compact Framework 2.0 and the new Whidbey Smart Device development features. As one of the testers on the Visual Studio for Devices team, I'm at least partially responsible for testing the following feature areas: Data Designers (aka "You don't have to hand-code all your managed SQL CE apps now") Setup and Deployment projects (aka "The 'Build CAB File' button on steroids) consuming Web Services (aka "Add Web Reference," aka "You don't have to hand-edit typed DataSets") Of course, there's some other stuff I test that's maybe not as interesting, but I'm pretty excited about the new data designer features, especially. Scott and Carlton (the Data PM and Dev, respectively) both gave some demos of these new features at the PDC. If you weren't there, you can at least check out the slides from some of the relevant talks: Exploring New Features in .NET Compact Framework "Whidbey" Release [ppt] Developing ...

So, Friday was really cool... I took a half-day from work, picked up my Son, and took him to a party/seance which was a blast. Saturday, I had to be up super early to do running around, but I managed to sneak off to the Japanese Garden with Adam and save a baby snapping turtle. After 2:00 I worked on the kitchen... OMG I was in pain. We extended one wall by two feet, ripped off the old sheetrock on one wall, and hung up three cabinets. We stopped working around 6:00pm, and I cleaned up till about 7:00. This morning I was up at 9:30, and working on the kitchen by 10:00... till 5:30... we removed the rest of the sheetrock in the entire kitchen, and hung up some more. We also took out the rest of the old cabinets. Now I will be sink-less till thursday (yay paper plates and plasticware). and I took all of the refuse to the curb for Garbage day tomorrow. It poured rain all day long, and I was the only one doing the trash. It was all heavy, all wet, and all slippery. I am in a lot of ...

Chris Anderson has been writing a lot of interesting information about the evolution of Avalon and, in particular, the motivations behind the design of XAML. Here are some of his recent entries: A brief history of XAML . . . After great debate, we decided that the programatic object model would be based on .NET conventions. We also felt that the markup should have the same programming model as code. Neither HTML nor RC files had this "markup == object model" tenet, and it made programming difficult. ASP.NET had (basically) this model, and people seemed to really like that. Is XAML just data? . . . When we started on XAML we had this same debate, and we basically decided early to side with our past experience with ASP.NET. While the architecturally pure view was to complete separate code and UI definition, the reality was that developers like to do things that aren't architecturally pure ;-) Of styles and styling More on Avalon Styling... and CSS... . . . We were then faced with ...

For the record, 50.6kbits/sec is not sufficient for my productivity needs. Sigh.Today I found online a synopsis of Steven Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. It's in PDF form, apparently written by Steven Covey himself. This version addresses my main complaint about the book: If you're so darn effective, why does it take an ENTIRE VOLUME to convey seven habits? If the habits are THAT complicated, most people won't be up to the task. This version seems aimed at people that have reading skills above that of your typical gastropod and are able to live without PAGES and PAGES of examples. It's really most pleasing at a short five pages and it's EXACTLY what I've wanted for a while. It's easy to read, re-read and remember. And - überplus - it's free.Find it here.
