LiveJournal and the No-Spider Flag
There are two standards established for letting Web spiders know that you don't want your pages indexed, the Robots Exclusion Protocal (robots.txt) and the Robots Meta Tag Protocol. Almost every Web spider out there, including Waypath's Scout, supports the Robots...

New: Cancellable In-Place Edit Popups
Controls like the ListView and the Outlook ListBar allow you to edit items in place by either double-clicking them or through a context UI feature such as a menu. This article provides a class which helps with the tricky parts of implementing in-place editing, and demonstrates how to use it to create an editable ListBox. VB.NET and C# code provided.

Post-PDC Thoughts
It was a slow surfing day for me yesterday; I actually don't have anything bookmarked other than the Longhorn Architecture diagram. So, for a change, no Saturday Grind. Instead, a few ruminations on the stuff that was ballyhooed at this year's PDC. I should preface this by noting that I wasn't there. This means that I've been free of the Microsoft reality-distortion field, but also that I'm relying on published stuff to form my opinions. Also, you should know that I think Windows user interface design has been in a steady downhill slide since roughly Windows 3.0. That said, and in no particular order: <big snip. Go read the original post now /> [Larkware News] Mike, you’re so right. I’ve tried to get excited about it all but beyond the odd improvement here or there to the UI, and the very welcome move to fully managed code most of the things that have been mentioned in the past week have absolutely zero impact on my working life at the moment.

Expose
Been using Panther for a few days now and I don't have a lot to say, which may not be so bad: it's a bundle of incremental improvements. One of which is Exposé. Now, Jason suggests an improvement to Exposé, but I have to disagree (at least in part; I definitely don't think it's perfect). I think there are actually several different types of application-switching. I love Cmd-Tab for the 900 times a day, I know where I'm going type of switching. What I'm finding Exposé extremely useful for is the now-what-was-I-just-doing type of switching. Like when you type a URL in Safari to call up the menu of your favorite lunch spot and then the phone rings and then you check email. That's the time you really want to see everything you were doing all spread out on your "desk." This of course brings to mind Apple's old piles idea, which, I imagine, is where Exposé came from in the first place.

Longhorn and RSS
Although the writing was on the wall, saying goodbye to RSS newsreaders may be premature. For more than two years we've been discussing the likelihood that Windows and other tools (specifically Microsoft Office) would eventually integrate RSS consumption capabilities, and it's starting to happen. It was inevitable; RSS has so much momentum and it provides useful solutions for many information problems. Looks like Bill Gates has RSS in his cross hairs. Longhorn is going to have integrated RSS support (no surprise here). So, get ready to uninstall all your third party RSS readers and have 95% of user-based RSS traffic come from Microsoft products. rssweblogsinc.com Where does that leave most RSS newsreaders? Well, they were somewhat commoditized long before Microsoft got into the act, and whether Microsoft has RSS in its crosshairs of not, is irrelevant. If Microsoft didn't integrate RSS, a slew of third party firms would have; and NewsGator was the first to innovate on this idea. ...

Object Relational Mapping BOF
When you have a booth in a MS conference, you get 3 'Exhibitor Staff' badges and one 'Attendee' badge. I usually get the Attendee one, but as this time we wanted to be present in most conferences, and I needed to be in the booth when the Exhibit Hall was opened, someone else from the DeKlarit team got the Attendee badge. I was able to attend to all the BOFs with my purple badge, but when it was the turn of the O/R mapping BOF, the guy in the door did not let me in. He was probably right, but it was really a shame, as Scott, who was hosting the BOF, asked at the beginning if there was someone from DeKlarit and it would have been great to be there. So, I went to the Smart Client BOF, and at the end I waited for Scott and invited him to go to the DeKlarit booth on Wednesday to exchange ideas. We had a good conversation, he is a very open guy, and I tried to explain him why DeKlarit is not an O/R mapper as it tries to build the Business Logic layer, not the Data Access Layer (and you ...
