Salt Lake County Issues Strip-Search Alert
Salt Lake County Issues Strip-Search Alert -- Ashley Broughton Salt Lake County authorities on Wednesday warned restaurant workers about a nationwide telephone scam after a female employee at an area Applebee's was forced to undergo a strip search. Utah is only the most recent state reporting such an incident. The calls are believed to originate in Florida, and the suspect -- who calls collect from a pay phone -- is almost always male, said Peggy Faulkner, spokeswoman for the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office. The man calls the restaurant and identifies himself as an undercover police officer conducting an investigation, she said. He then asks who is working. When an employee says the name of a female, he asks for a description of the woman and then says, "That's the one." He tells them the female employee is suspected of stealing property from a customer, Faulkner said, and suggests a strip search be performed. The woman at the Applebee's submitted to such a search, she said. ...

Weather May Help Battle Against Wildfires in California
In southern California a strong onshore flow off the ocean heavily laden with moisture has dramatically raised the humidity across the area, according to the NOAA National Weather Service. Strong southwest to westerly winds of 20 to 40 mph with higher gusts are expected inland Thursday with this marine push, said forecasters from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., and NOAA National Weather Service forecast offices in San Diego and Los Angeles.

Find the dummy posts on Don Box's Blog
If you've attended PDC03, you must have seen the first demo made by Don Box and Chris Anderson which ended by submitting a post on Don Box's blog using Indigo. The post made in live is here. Can you imagine that Don and Chris would have taken the risk to do this demo without a minimum "real life" testing and without repeating it some times do acquire a good practise? I don't. Now guys, I'd like to launch a small game/contest. The goal is to identify all dummy posts on Don's blog, which might be the results of the tests and repeats of the demo. I already have some ideas on the question ;-) I wish Don could comment this post and say if my theory is reality...

Updated: 13 Ways To Loathe VB
One of the best features of the otherwise kind of hard work Dr. Dobb's Journal is Verity Stob's column. If you've not read any yet, then you can browse through this lot for a treat. Particularly you might want to cast a look at How to survive a code review and StobLog: ("I should once again remind everybody that next month is the Great GUID Renumbering Month. In order to serve you better, and to guarantee the supply for the next five years, it has become necessary to renumber many existing GUIDs. Those of you in the south, please prepend 0xE4 as appropriate, whereas those of you in rural areas must add a carryover quartet of 0x1C7A to those GUIDs with an even number of primary factors, treating residuals obliquely"). Anyway, Thirteen Ways.. annoyed all sorts of VB apologists when it first came out, leading to many generally ill-thought out rebuttals and petty defences of our favourite language, some of which you can still read if you look for them. But I kind of liked it and find ...

Lately, I've been thinking about money a lot. That happened because I ran short of it during a long, long time. It seemed to me like even the New Yorker shared my concerns, what with a review of money books it recently published: Smart Money, by John Cassidy ("Two Wall Street classics appear in new editions"). Interesting books, by the way. One of them, The Intelligent Investor, teaches the layman the principles of "value investing." Valuing companies based on the information contained in their financial statements constitutes an entire discipline, much of it established by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd in their 1934 textbook, "Security Analysis." Graham, who taught at Columbia Business School for years, and numbered Warren Buffett among his students, is regarded as the pioneer of "value investing," the painstaking pursuit of cheap stocks. In 1949, Graham explained his methods to the general public in "The Intelligent Investor" ... Buffett has described it as "by far the best book ...

tailor iTerm with Interface Builder
i just installed a new version of iTerm and my favourite keymapping suddenly disappeared (ok for others it already disappeared in august). so as mentioned at the sourceforge page of iTerm you can tailor the keymappings by editing: /Applications/iTerm.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/MainMenu.nib as i actually never edited a os x resource before i googled and found this very usefull post which i copy without permission here: From: shamino@techie.com (David C.) Subject: Re: How to hack menu's in X? Date: 29 Dec 2002 22:27:28 -0500 Most (if not all) OS X applications are not single files, but are application packages. The file (with the .app suffix on the name) is actually a folder. If you Ctrl-click the application in the Finder, you'll see "Show Package Contents" as one of the choices. This will open the application as a folder.Once the package is opened, there's a folder called Contents in there. Within Contents, there's a folder called Resources. All of the application's ...

A few thoughts on Avalon
I spent a few hours working on the Avalon screen saver . The experience was a very good. After seeing some of the demos, I was very impressed with how easy it was to implement things. However, when it came time for me to use Avalon, it took me quite a bit longer to actually implement what I wanted because using XAML is a different state of mind than programming GDI+. I found it somewhat difficult to decide where to draw the line on what goes into XAML and what goes into the codebehind. Since basicly everything _could_ go into the codebehind, I had to decide how much should go into XAML. Once I actually figured out how my app was supposed to be architected, the only thing that kept me from rocking were the bugs and unimplemented features I found. I did have quite a few problems with a number of bugs, but it was no more than I would expect in such an early product. Once again, I found myself not knowing how to best architect my app. I would often call over someone from the Avalon ...
