SQL Server Clustering, Failover, and Load Balancing
In a perfect hosted environment, your SQL server database would be replicated to several machines to ensure data availability in case of a data corruption. In addition, a failover would happen automatically if say, “Select * from sometable” did not work. Furthermore, when traffic hits start to over load a database, say with 5000 connection attempts, a backup server would come to the rescue and aid by absorbing the extra load. In a perfect world, all this wouldn’t be necessary because SQL Server 2000 would be able to handle 1 billion connections for every human on the planet with no downtime for patches, and most importantly, would never have security holes like Slammer. Ok ok, back to reality. The perfect redundant database scenario is...

The Titans Expansion
Age series gamers will welcome the new addition of an expansion pack for the the Age of Mythologies game. The disc adds the Atlanteans mythology to the other three, in addition to many new units and more. I have started playing the Titans campaigns. I have only played 3 episodes, but the second two of those have been truly interesting maps, with plenty of extra little discoveries for those who like to play slower and explore everything before finishing the objectives. I have even noticed some new map terrains that I have never noticed in the original version. The Atlanteans have some very exciting features, and I suspect they will become a favourite quickly. Please let me know if you would like to contribute an article here. Happy AOx-ing!

PDC Technology Impressions - the Ugly, the Bad, and the Good
The Ugly Some development technologies require Longhorn. XAML is only available on Longhorn. Automated UI testing technology is only available on Longhorn. This is development technology... It is hard enough forcing a customer to upgrade their OS. However, with the hardware requirements presented with Longhorn (1G RAM, 64Mb Video, dual-processor if possible) I would be asking my customer to upgrade all their workstations. This is totally unrealistic. Let's face it: In general you can probably get by with requiring an OS version once it has been out for 1.5 years. However, this Longhorn release demands way more than just an OS. Furthermore, what is Longhorn offering the business customer? Imagine going to a VP and saying, "But Bob, this allows you to organize your photos better. Also, it combines contacts from Exchange, Outlook Express, and your PST files all into one view. It helps me to organize my files on my local PC rather than posting them to the corporate document store. ...

Service Oriented Analysis
The roundtable on Service Oriented Analysis was interesting, because it showed the culture clash between 'Pure Object' guys and 'Service Oriented ' guys. Martin Fowler was the OO guy and someone from the Indigo team whose name I cannot remember was the SOA guy. Fowler was quite ironic about SOA. He said he did not know what does SOA mean, and that the meaning changes every 5 minutes. In his mind, SOA was about application integration. If you have a property layered application, then SOA is just adding another layer to adapt the inner interface to the Service Oriented one. Inside the application domain, you will keep using thightly coupled OO classes. The Indigo guy view was that you can use SOA even inside applications (i.e., inside different teams), and it was a much more pervasive thing. The audience seemed to like Fowler's point of view, as there were applauses after some of his comments. At least there is agreement that you should not expose your inner object model in the ...

ObjectSpaces
Some information about ObjectSpaces that was given in Luca Bolognese's presentation: - It is designed to be a thin layer on top of ADO.NET. It's just as ADO.NET but with objects. There isn't an object server and they don't provide caching, so it's not a Entity Beans clone. - They are targeting a 30/40% performance decrease compared to the DataSet/ADO.NET approach. They are currently 2 times slower. - One of the usual issues with O/R mappers is that they have to decide how to load an object graph. Using the example from their demo, if you have: Continent string Name ArrayList Countries Country string name Continent continent if you retrieve one Continent, you could want to load all its countries or not. In ObjectSpaces you can specify a 'span' when you query for Continent that says that you want to retrieve the Country, or leave the span empty to specify that you just want the Continent but no the Country. The other way to deal with this is to use 'Lady Loading' (which Luca said ...

PDC Conference Impressions - the Ugly, the Bad, and the Good
The Ugly Crowds, crowds, and crowds Couldn't get in to sessions because of crowds Couldn't move between sessions 'cause of crowds The Bad I started out with my IM signature saying "Wireless is Awesome!" It didn't take long to have to change that to read, "limping on wireless." The problems, DHCP times out every 15 minutes and one couldn't renew the address. Signal strength was "Excellent" but no IP address. Network down entirely on Tuesday. The labs (well at least the one I did) were pathetic. I did a guided Indigo lab that essentially gave instructions to one which lines of a canned sample to uncomment. Pathetic! I learned nothing. When I asked the proctor a question about Indigo he responded with, "Well, I don't really understand what is going on. I am just here to make sure people can keep up with the presenter." Keep up with uncommenting the right lines that is. (I think there is value in the labs if you use them as samples.) Bad communication on what technology is in the PDC ...

The Investigators: One Lawmaker Seems Immune to the City's Ticket Crackdown. Why?
We know New York cops have been cracking down on parking violations, handing out tickets and towing cars if you don't pay your fine. But an Eyewitness News investigation has discovered a powerful politician with thousands of dollars in unpaid tickets. And he doesn't get towed. The Investigators Jim Hoffer is here with his exclusive report.

Create, Manage, and Host RSS
Lots of people ask us about using MySmartChannels just for RSS solutions. Here are the basic steps to get started. Many MySmartChannels users create channels of content for RSS purposes. A channel is a container for items, information objects that can contain just about anything you want. There's no limit to the amount of data a channel (or channel item) can contain (well, 16GB per item). Here are the steps you can follow to see if our platform might be useful for your RSS management and hosting purposes.First, register as a member on the MyST platform - it's easy and free. After you register and login, click on "My Channels" (upper left). You'll then find a button for creating a "New" channel (upper right). Once you finish creating a channel, add two or three channel items--just test data for now. The tool bar provides many options for channels - the first option is the "New" channel item button . In RSS parlance, the name of an item becomes the <title/>, the Summary of an item is ...

Math Fun Facts
The Mudd Math Fun Facts! site is worth checking out. Although it doesn't detail the demonstrations for the facts exposed, it is quite mind teasing. I especially like the random fact page. PlanetMath is also interesting for math-curious people. It is similar to wikipedia, but focused on math definitions, theorems and proofs. The presentation is pretty nice, using images (rendered from LaTeX it seems) for the formulas, but unfortunately the site doesn't load very fast. Wolfram's MathWorld is another good reference....

Finishing up OOPSLA
OOPSLA '03 was concluded for my part today with a panel discussion on "Application Servers - One size fits all...or not". Microsoft, Oracle, Sun and IBM was represented, but the questions did not lead to any real substance. Microsofts Technical Evangelist on the scene was as usual excellent and way more drilled than the other participants. On tuesday I caught the norwegian consultants from BEKK present their solution for the norwegian educational department, and attended a tutorial on UML 2.0. The additions and alterations to the UML standard are made to facilitate MDD (Model Driven Development). This seems to have been the hot potato on this years OOPSLA. MDD and MDA (Model Driven architecture) has caused the fiercest fight (sadly I missed that panel). Finally a panel on XP and Agile coaching gave me a better overview of coaching without breaking any new ground -> too much consensus. Yesterday was dedicated to a panel on Test Driven Development and concluded with a session on the ...
