So PDC has kicked off in a huge way. General reaction to Bill & Jim's kickoff has receptive thus far. Our division Microsoft.com powers a lot of what Joe Punter sees in the form of MSDN and related websites - hope you enjoy them, a lot of work went into them! Technologies such as Avalon, Yukon, Longhorn, and many other Pacific North-West locations have been hot internal topics for over a year now. Damn nice to see them making the light of day. I salute quite a few of my friends that have been actively wrecking their marriages to fulfill some of those dreams. Most incredible sight of the day thus far was Amazon (usually a strictly bespoke shop) demo'ing building a shopping cart using Avalon. Biggest downer of the day was one blogger bitching about network connectivity. Quit bitching, watch the presentations, there is plenty of time for blogging or checking mail later. Count yourself lucky that you could attend - many people were turned away.

The IT guys loaded up Mac OSX Panther while I was sick on Friday. It is cool! Why? Easy Navigation. Persistant sources/favorites in the finder Finder enable quicker access and context to where you are. The color labeling is back and totally rocks. It's easy to mark trail to files and folders. Yeah, I know a lot of people will say that that's what Microsoft did x years ago with the tree on the left, but what I like about this is that its a limited set of starting points, not a fully redundant tree. And favorite starting points that I've put over there, not everything under the sun. They've made smart choices to limit the complexity, and allow users to make smart choices too. Easy Windows Management. Expose is totally cool and fixes a large hole in windows management that OSX had. See the demo in the link here. It enables you to dynamically scale all open windows down so you can see the landscape and pick the one you want. You can also see just open windows of an active app. Simple, ...

Just for masochistic jollies, I'm installing the latest in a never ending round of Microsoft Security patches. Their download site is still confusing. And as far as I'm concerned there should be a direct link to the security download site from the Microsoft Home page. But, alas, no. You still have to make your way through several links to get to security download section. I just think that these guys still don't get it...At least, now they're trying to get it....

As I blog, the "Ski Boy" is off becoming acquainted with his very early Christmas present - a Sony DSC-P10. It is a very sweet little 5 Megapixel camera - a great lens, good user interface, the perfect size, etc. The present is early because we're headed off to Iowa next week for Peter's stepbrother's wedding. I thought it would be fun for Peter to bring his new little camera along...

Over a month ago I mentioned that Barbara Hall was still a contender for mayor, as far as I was concerned. Well, not anymore. Barbara Hall has been in danger of dropping from my list of eligible candidates for quite some time now. Frankly, she's not a leader. Yes, she may be conciliatory and an effective manager, but I feel that Toronto needs someone who can really push the city forward. Hall has experience on her side, but that was as mayor of Toronto before amalgamation. A larger city needs stronger leadership who will take a stand, not backroom negotiation with peoples unseen. Secondly, Barbara Hall continues to waffle on the future of the island airport and still looks to be leaning in favour of expansion. I dislike the idea of expanding the island airport, but I also dislike how Hall has not been clear on the issue. David Miller will most certainly get my vote, and for reasons opposite to why I will not vote for Barbara Hall. Miller is a leader who has stood up for what he ...

Tori's whole "Little Earthquakes" album is brilliant, certainly her best, and one of the best single albums of all time. Should we hold it against her that she's subsequently become, well, somewhat erratic? (I have a friend who can pinpoint the exact moment that Tori went completely insane. It's on the next album.) This song is the first one I'm putting on the list because of the aggressive piano pounding that comes in right after "every nice girl." (Rock)

Well, a few other people have posted about the Weblogger's BoF, with mostly good stuff to say. Frankly, I was rather disappointed. I realize that bloggers are by nature “Type A” personalities, but c'mon! Clemens Vasters talked far too much about himself (really!). He also spent far too much time gloating over how much Das Blog is better than .Text. Perhaps it was in jest, perhaps not, it was difficult to tell. It was also difficult to hear anyone else speak, as Vasters did not often yield the floor. I did enjoy listening to Marc Canter challenge the group, he had a few interesting ideas pertaining to blog-reviewing instead of blog-editorializing. His main point was basically that many, many people will write a review of a product, movie, etc, but relatively few (only a few million!) people will blog-editorialize. He suggested building solutions around this new potential blog “market.“ Unfortunately, most of the conversation (nay, argument!) would have been better served over a few ...
