And finally, the last geek birthday present: Today, "Mom", the Ski Boy, and I picked out my birthday present from Mom. The little gem to the left is a Garmin E-Trex Vista. My very first GPS. I am so excited. My big goal is to start geocaching with this puppy.

I am such a geek stud. I installed my birthday linksys print server. I had to do some finagling unrelated to the print server. Hewey (my laptop) did not have the HP Photosmart Print driver installed and my HP installation CD was bad. So I downloaded and installed the print driver. However, even with the print driver installed, Hewey just couldn't seem to cope with an indirect connection to the printer. So, I unplugged the print server, pulled out my wireless card so Hewey couldn't see the wireless network (which would only confuse matters), and then plugged the HP printer directly into Hewey. Hewey liked that configuration and we printed successfully. So, I then unhooked the printer from Hewey, hooked the printer back up to the print server, put my wireless card back in and voila, Hewey could now see and print to the HP. Totally great. So I can now print from anywhere in the "Ski Boy"/"Slat Rat" Manse. This stuff is so much fun!

Zack is in his chivalry phase, fascinated by all things knight and castle. The animated Disney version of Robin Hood has been a household staple all his life and a personal favorite of his. As a treat, we got the 1938 Technicolor classic starring Errol Flynn and Olivia de Haviland,...

Panther weblog I know that no posts since April is a little sad (ok - a lot sad). May 2003 was the time that I started to focus most of my attention on Panther and it was hard to talk about Jaguar. Given that I couldn't talk about the new cat, silence prevailed. I'm definitely going to talk about Panther and share some insights and tour throught the cool and subtle features in this release. I've recently started using the TypePad service and will do all of my postings from there. The new blog can be found <a href="http://bereskin.typepad.com/panther_weblog/">here</a>. Thanks for all the emails encouraging me to keep up the blog.

Ok I am here ready for PDC, time to create my schedule. It took me about an hour to get on a super shuttle bus to get to the hotel. Wait. I landed at 3:00pm and made it to my room by 5:00pm. I guess it took 2 hours. Most of the time was spent trying to get on a super shuttle. It cost me $13. I met a really interesting person on the shuttle. He was a Microsoft employee but I didn't get his name. We talked about security and enterprise people processes. I basically here this voice in my head every time I hear some one talk about the break down of development process, "You can take perfectly great software tools very capable of producing securable, scalable, instrumentable, deployable, and reliable, enterprise solutions, but when you add people it all just breaks." And it surely isn't for the lack of enabling tools. Like Nunit, Nant, Application Blocks and more. Oh back to the arrival story. Rory, I don't think you can make it in a half hour. Maybe if you take a cab, but I have to ...

DiceLaRed ("The Network Says") helps its customers see and understand. For example, here is a picture of a real time graph, shown in the browser, that shows Spain's political parties by share of the current news cycle. In real time. Clicking on a wedge lets you dive into the news stream. The flow of news and blogs is beyond understanding. The headlines alone are overwhelming. So we need machines to helps us make sense of the flow. DiceLaRed creatively blends news crawling + lexical analysis + data mining + data visualization + customization + alerting. Apply this to your customers' weblogs, your industry magazines, and local newspapers for an environmental scan. Apply this to job board postings. Understand labor market demand across the usual dimensions. Then stretch to discover new buzzwords and "terms of art". Can you say competitive analysis? How about strategic recruiting? Apply this to medical discussion boards. Look for spikes in conversation about symptoms to detect ...
