A Mossbery article I didn't see coming: if you're tired of viruses, he says, look into a Mac. I've certainly enjoyed the fact that owning a computer with less than 5% market share means most viruses won't affect me. But reading this makes me wonder if Mac OS X really is more secure. Another thought crosses my mind: how can Apple, with far less of an R&D budget than Microsoft, build a stronger operating system (if the head of Symantec's Mac products group is to be believed)? After all, Apple, with much less of a budget for R&D, builds its...

It’s been ‘out’ for a week now, but finally the BNZ have announced the 2003 winners of the Katherine Mansfield Memorial Awards. (Based on enquiries at the Manners Mall branch, they took their time.) One friend appears to have won the top prize… congratulations Natasha! :) Nikster especially likes the unique way the story is narrated in the first person. But she’ll have to have another read of it in a moment, when she hangs up the modem. :)

Here's the thing they don't tell you when having a kid- you're going to get sick more often. If the sleep deprivation doesn't get you, the germ "breeder" your baby is will get you. Now I know why some of my coworkers become so fastidious about washing hands before meals wherever they go. Today, I woke up with a 100 degree fever. I can hear my boss saying "Son't come in if you're sick, you'll get everyone else sick too!". So I missed an important class I wanted to attend. Ah well, I should take the time

I have a completely non-traditional office. I don't own a desk and the space I work in is sparse and zen-like, with a great view of the woods surrounding our neighborhood. Really, my PowerBook is my office, so I don't need the accoutrements of normal business. But until today, I've been using...

Reading this and this made me think about how silly it is for people to have religious arguments about whether one OS or application or hardware product is better than another. I mean, on a scale of 1 to 10, seems to me every computer in existence has got to be a 3 or less. Having an argument about which OS is a 2 and which one is a 2.5 just seems goofy. We are nowhere near done improving computers and software and networks. Better to make some constructive comments and help us all move a little further toward the upper end of the scale. This is not to say that 2.5 isn't, proportionally, a lot better than 2! Just that some people seem to focus a little too much on the differences at some moment in time, and not enough on the overall progress of the industry.

Well, since I'm off work tonight, I finally have some extra time to write an entry here. My laptop got here on Friday, and I love it. I think I'll end up buying laptops as primary computers in the future. I'd still like to get a Powerbook at some point. Upgrade my wireless to 802.11g, so I can get 54Mbps instead of 11Mbps. My DSL was upgraded finally, supposedly to 3.0 Mbit down, 640 Kbit up. Although I haven't been able to really get those speeds. Not sure what's up, I'll have to phone Newtel Aliant soon to see about it. I also got my laptop backpack today, from someone on eBay. Since I haven't gotten around to taking a picture yet (or even of my laptop yet), here's the eBay auction: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3434655792. It's pretty nice, although the colour isn't my favorite. But the blue one I saw like it elsewhere on eBay, I didn't really like the seller, or his terms or shipping prices. But this will do. Much better than paying $100+ for a laptop bag ...

Like Richard, I don't normally do these things. But since Laura suggests that "everyone should do this quiz", I figured I'd give it a go, if not to further enlighten the World, then to fill in the space around writing emails and other such interesting things at work. So here we go... firsts: First best friend: I don't think I've ever had friends! Hmm... guess it'd have to be David, who I knew when I was about 6, and lived in Spixworth, near Norwich. First real memory of something: I'm lucky if I can remember yesterday... think it'd be knocking my front teeth out when I was 4 or something. First real kiss: Not got a clue (and no, that's not because I'm a casanova). First job: First proper job would be when I worked in a hotel at home, during sixth form. First crush: Can't remember her name now, but it was in Spixworth. First screen name: Err... don't think I really have a screen name, as such... First self purchased album: "I Should Coco", by Supergrass. First funeral: Not dead yet. ...

One of the things I debate in my own head when working on gnomedesktop.org is the use of transparent pngs. The majority of the audience uses browsers that support trans pngs but there are still a few that don't. Development of IE by Microsoft seems to have pretty much halted. Now that they've won the browser war, it seems they could care less about about IE. These days it is an undisputable fact that Mozilla is a better web browser than IE. Is it time to start adding those little stickers to our webpages that say "Best viewed with Mozilla/Gecko"?

I recently got a new desktop and I've been gradually moving all my stuff over to it. I use NetNewsWire to keep up with most of the weblogs I read, and recently the author posted an article on where NNW stores its data. Using this information I came up with a fairly easy way to move my NNW data to my new machine using the terminal: On the old machine, tar everything NNW needs to a file (make sure you're in your home directory): tar cvf nnw.tar ~/Library/Preferences/com.ranchero.NetNewsWire.plist ~/Library/Application Support/NetNewsWire (This is also an effective way of backing up your NNW data.) Copy the nnw.tar file to the new machine, into the base of your home directory. From the terminal, untar the file (again run from your home directory): tar xvf nnw.tarYou can now delete the nnw.tar file. A more ambitious person could probably take this idea and turn it into an Applescript for migrating NNW to a new machine.
