Weblog research links. Lilia is looking for links on weblog research of the academically endorsed variety. While most of the good writing on weblogs is to be found on the web itself rather than in academic publications, more traditional-looking references can come in handy to those in an academic environment. Here are a couple pointers of mine. (Most are taken out of my blogroll on the left.)Websites Weblog Kitchen -Weblog Books, Who's Who Blogresearch - group blog. Logitech's Bluetooth diNovo Media Desktop. Pricey new Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo from Logitech. The diNovo Media Desktop comes with both a wireless Bluetooth keyboard and Logitech's MX900 Cordless Optical Mouse, but what really makes it worth the cash is that it comes with a third wireless Bluetooth peripheral called the MediaPad which can be used to control your PC's music and video software, tell you if you have a new email or instant message, and even double as a calculator. (The Moore School Lectures and the British Lead in Stored Program Computer Development (1946 -1953))
In 1946 the British were able to take the lead in computer development from America. The main challenge had become the rapid construction of a machine while solving the one remaining major technical problem - storing a program in memory. This problem was well understood in concept but the practical solution was more challenging than it appeared. As a result of their experience in the war the British were approximately 2 to 3 years in advance of the Americans in the crucial area of rapid prototyping and evolution of complex electronic devices. It was this ability that enabled them to take the lead in computer development from America.

A formula for blogging in organizations. I just learned about another SQL Server weblog community: SQL Team weblogs. Running on Scott Watermasysk's .TEXT. By the way, the SQL Team website has tons of info on SQL Server. [The Scobleizer Weblog] I was going to point to this as a good example of the benefits you obtain when you lower the barriers to expression. And it is. But it also contains some interesting material on knowledge work from a slightly different point of view than I've taken before. So I've also subscribed to their RSS feed (SQL Team Weblog RSS feed). One of the benefits you get when you lower the barriers to expression and lower the barriers to attention by providing RSS feeds is that the abstract notions of self-organizing networks get a set of operational tools. This is what is getting us excited about the potential for these new tools inside and across organizations. Blogging in organizations = lowering the barriers to expression + lowering the barriers to ...

After church tonight Me, Jimmy, Whitney, Melonie, Chris, Matt, and Emily decided to go to Ruby Tuesdays in H-Ville. It was alright... The waitress was terrible though! She overcharged Whitney and Melonie! But they didn't demand to see the manager like I probabbly would have done... Oh well... When we got back to Athens we decided to go and write on Rod's car windows with window chalk... We almost got caught... And Jimmy wrote FHQWGADS on one of the windows....

Lawyers used to trounce the one-month-per-year-of-service rule as dead in the water. The courts refused to be bound by such rigid formalism, they said. Enter scene Justice Day, who says in the case of a middle manager that the one-month per year of service guaranteed in his employment contract is all right. It could be higher, says the judge, but it’s not outside the range of normal. On top of that, the judge seems to happily rely upon the modest results generated by wrongful dismissal databases in order to fashion his judgement. You read it here first: Allen v. Bosley Real...

In 1867 Sir Richard Burton, the famed British explorer of the 19th century, made a journey down Brazil's Mississippi River, the Rio São Francisco. Following the trail Burton laid out, a BBC reporter named Paulo Cabral recently attempted a similar journey this time accompanied by a personal computer and the ability to post daily blogged updates. Here is his account:

http://www.internetnews.com/dev-news/article.php/3093931 "Like a developer's version of "Where's Waldo," careful readers of Longhorn-focused and PDC-themed blogs (even "official" sites in Microsoft's own PDC Web pages) can find leaks and juicy tidbits about the builds they will see for Longhorn. The same is true for Visual Studio, code-named Whidbey, and Microsoft's database application, SQL Server, code-named Yukon."

From http://nytimes.com via http://commondreams.org: As the flier inviting guests to the Pentagon screening declared: "How to win a battle against terrorism and lose the war of ideas. Children shoot soldiers at point-blank range. Women plant bombs in cafes. Soon the entire Arab population builds to a mad fervor. Sound familiar? The French have a plan. It succeeds tactically, but fails strategically. To understand why, come to a rare showing of this film."

China succeeds in sending a man into space, the third country to do so. Yeah! A Chinese manned mission to the moon in a few years has been rumored for a while now. Will this wake up ESA? (Sending satellites or unmanned probes only gets you so far, you know). And how about NASA? Am I the only one left on Earth that wants a manned mission to Mars like, yesterday? Politicians (theoretically reflecting what their constituents think) say that it's too expensive, too dangerous. People might die, you know. Does it matter that the astronauts would gladly give their lives for the chance of succeeding? (Heck, I'm not an astronaut, but I would too). No. They have to be protected from themselves it seems. Oh, and money is a problem? A mission to Mars could cost 20, 30 billion. I mean, that's too expensive right? Right... How much is the war in Irag going to cost? Isn't the US paying 4 billion a month for it already? And, sending toy cars that run Java and take measurements and pictures of ...
