"Paul Krugman" [Daypop Top 40] I have never seen it put so starkly. Krugman knows what BushCo did with the tax cuts and now we know. There has not been government disingenuousness of this magnitude in my lifetime. These bastards have to go for the common good, a phrase I can hear them sneering at even as I write.

Well, PDC is just about a week away. I'm really looking forward to it. One great thing for me this year is not only am I attending (how could I not? It's in my backyard), but I'm presenting the Data pre-con. [0] Should be a ton of fun since I plan on building a Whidbey Windows Forms application that works with a Yukon database. All in just over six hours. Can't wait! [0] http://msdn.microsoft.com/events/pdc/precon.aspx End of line. This Blog Hosted On: http://www.SqlJunkies.com/

So, it's been a month since I updated this so I think it's about time. I've been running valgrind on random stuff in GNOME lately. So far I've gone through - gnome-applets and some underlying stuff in libpanel-applet gnome-vfs libgnomeui and libbonobo - gnome-terminal - gnome-media - gnome-utils - file-roller There's plenty of leaks left for someone else to hit on so fire up valgrind and start filling up bugzilla with reports and more importantly...PATCHES! Other than that I went fishing in the mountains a couple of weeks ago and got this nice trout: My nice catch Autumn is great :-)

One of the new templates added in Whidbey's BCL is Nullable, which allows defining Nullable providing "nullness" on value types. The usage is very simple:Nullable oi = null;Console.WriteLine( oi.HasValue ); // falseConsole.WriteLine( oi == null ); // trueoi = 3;Console.WriteLine( oi.HasValue ); // trueConsole.WriteLine( oi == null ); // false The instance can be null because it's a reference type and the assignment can be done because operators are also specialized for type T.I don't want to talk about the difference between ValueTypes and ReferenceTypes, or if the performance of the Nullable instances can be compared with the ValueTypes usage. But i was wondering about its usage in applications and probably their usage could be a bit complicated.Any method that wanted to receive any value will receive an object:void MyMethod( object t ){}In the method body any one will query if the value is a ValueType or a ReferenceType. Now we have to ask for the instance to see if it's an ...

Welcome to my blog. My name (which should be painfully obvious from the blog's title) is Brian A. Randell. Not to be confused with another, very prolific geek Prof. Brian Randell [0]. I spend most of my time as a consultant with MCW Technologies [1]. In addition, I am an instructor with DevelopMentor [2] where I teach courses like Essential Windows Forms [1] and the Visual Basic .NET curriculum (among other things). If you look at the categories, you'll get an idea of what I'll be posting about with more to come. I'm too busy re-ripping all my music to AAC's for iTunes! ;) I think I'm going to burn all my MPC's to disc, and any new stuff I'll compress to both types. Just in case an MPC plugin for iTunes comes out in the near future. On the other hand, maybe I should just stick to AAC, in case I ever get a Mac or at least an iPod. AAC seems to have more of a future than Musepack, like it or not. And, so far the AAC's I'm making (with a command line compressor, of course, so I can do high-quality VBR) are passing my crappy hearing tests (which is highly scientific - it amounts to me listening to it and thinking, that's good enough, I'm not hearing the weirdness from the old MP3's). Juggling quality, ease of creation, and compatibility concerns can hopefully only get easier as things settle down, and the "true" successor to MP3 is decided.

The speaker paired with Kunstler was Virginia Postrel, describing some of what's in her latest book, The Substance of Style, and a weird thing happened... or failed to happen. The pairing had great potential. Kunstler says our cities have ended up lifeless and unwelcoming as a result of terrible design, poor urban planning, making the world safe for automobiles and other reasons. Postrel says we're entering the Age of Aesthetics, where design is King, where no company can ignore design as it develops its products and where people are increasingly using designed artifacts to sculpt their identities. The interaction of the two speakers should have been awesome, and in fact I thought I could see Kunstler restless with the desire to jump in. He's mad, motivated, inspired. Instead, all the audience questions went to Postrel, whose message, intentional or otherwise, was that the resurgence of design is an overall good thing that is making the world a better place. Having published pretty ...

Great piece in WIRED by Lessig on blogs and poliics A managed community works about as well as a managed economy. So the challenge is to find a way to build community without the community feeling built. The article's message is that Open Source is what works. It seems the Church can learn here from the power of the movement in the software world. ...you will absolutely suffocate anything that you're trying to do on the Internet by trying to command and control it... Part of how the Church, mostly in it's traditonal and established , denominational forms, does "command and control" is in systematically ignoring the open source nature of community. They have Web sites and web developers, but the conversations are lacking becuase they want to control them. The publishers avoid allowing the customers to "talk" about their products because they're afraid someone will trash them. Well, if the shoe fits.......On the otherhand, if the product is worthwhile, wouldn't we WANT to know how ...
