Local School's Trademark Application Sidetracked by AOL
The Times-Picayune reports that Grantham University, a Slidell-based university that has 5,000 students enrolled in Internet correspondece classes, has run into trouble trying to trademark a new slogan, "America's Online University." The school has operated for 50 years in relative obscurity, so the attention resulting from AOL's objection to the proposed trademark provides some welcome attention to the enterprise. "If all of this sheds a little light on what we're doing, then that's wonderful," said spokesman Jason Maloni. The school has withdrawn the application, rather than fight with AOL.

Judges Fail to Attend Community Meeting
The American Press reports that neighborhood watch groups in Lake Charles are upset that judges from the 14th JDC failed to attend a meeting that was called to address the problem of reduced bail bonds. Chief District Judge David Painter said the invitation from the group was discussed among the judges. Judge Wilford Carter agreed to attend the meeting, he said. "He just didn't go," Painter said. The meeting was called to address the rising number of criminal suspects who have been re-arrested after posting reduced bonds.

Councilman Sues Schoolboard for Hazing Incident
The Advocate reports that Ascension Parish Councilman Jerry Savoy has filed suit against the Ascension Parish School Board, a high school football coach, and the parents of three students that allegedly hazed Savoy's son. The suit, which was filed on Tuesday, would have prescribed today. Savoy, who was recently re-elected to his spot on the council, claims that he wants to stop future incidents. The school board, however, has already adopted an anti-hazing policy and criminal charges are being pursued against the students responsible for the incident.

Trade Union Delegation To Iraq
On October 5th six trade unionists from the FBU, TSSA, RMT and NUJ travelled to Baghdad for a series of meetings with the newly formed democratic Iraqi trade unions. The trip organised by the Stop the War Coalition and hosted by the Iraqi Federation of Trade Unions was the first of its kind since the war and occupation. The tour stopped at various workplaces including a Metalworks, a Fire Station, a Transport Depot, an Oil Refinery, and Baghdad University. All agreed that the delegation had been a success and hopefully the first of many to forge links with Iraqi workers who will soon be fighting attempted privatisation by western companies.

Oh yeah, the political reason
So of course, even if no technological progress is being made, you could be excited by the political statement. I think the political effect will be negligable since Russia and the US did this crap like 40 years ago...in fact in my mind it only generates the idea that China is more "behind" than it probably really is. But lets say, for the sake of argument, this does make some sort of "China is now a real power" statement. Well suck! Because as much as I want to see non-US powers gaining more oomph in the world, they need to not be total loser regimes. I mean, if this was Japan or Korea or Australia or Germany or India or something... well that might be a positive political statement.

China's Space Program...hum di dum
OK, so I have political objections to using lots of government money for NASA; its not even in the ballpark of "defense spending" of course, but regardless of your views on armaments, it is easier to justify as related to practical concerns AND being the place of a centralized government. I think space is cool too, but I don't really think NASA has been worthwhile overall for the past decade or two. Anyway, so aside from all these monetary and "who's responsibility" concerns, I think space exploration is nifty and fun and entertaining. But I am not remotely excited about China putting a man in space. Why? Well, the Russian/US space race was a political and technological/scientific affair. Politics may have been the motivation, but technology was a big part of the battleground. China has basically launched a clone of the Soyuz: ancient technology itself. Whoop-de-do. Thus far, China's space program is purely political. I mean, the Soyuz is a cool (relatively) cheap launch system ...

Look and feel
Neither SharpReader nor RSS Bandit renders my business card nicely. They both strip out or otherwise deactivate the CSS tags that are used in rendering the card. So go my web site if you want to see the card "for real". Raises an interesting question. How much support should syndication feeds like RSS have for look and feel? [Harry Pierson's DevHawk Weblog] I think the main goal of a RSS Reader is to syndicate feed informations, with stress on information. So a consistent GUI is more important than to get an idea of the personal preferences of colors/design of each individual. But there are always links within the detail view: at the top to the main blog page, and within Read On... directly to the post itself.
