I think I have to watch it a second time to fully appreciate. There was no mystery in this movie. No real plot. Matrix 2 was better. We know that she will live and there will be a second volume. The action scenes are terribly long and can be even boring. Instead of making two volumes, Tarantino should have put only a single movie. You can kill five persons in three hours, can't you? If not, see El Mariachi/Desperado/Once Upon a time in Mexico. His pal Roberto Rodriguez can teach him some. I'm a bit disappointed maybe due to my great expectations. I agree that it's a tribute to Bruce Lee (or a ripoff). What I liked: - The music is great - It's visually beautiful - Uma Thurman is better than ever

After getting my PowerBook back from its last repair trip and finding that they did literally nothing to address the key issue, that my hard drive was extremely flaky and needed to be replaced, I spent another week of my own time trying to gather evidence for the second attempt. I backed up and formatted my hard drive a number of times. I ran tools like Norton Utilities and DiskWarrior repeatedly, which found more issues each time I ran them. I attempted to reinstall the operating system, which failed due to disk errors. So, I finally sucked it up and sent it in once again. I was sure to express my concerns to the Genius Bar staff person, so as to ensure that things would be properly handled this time around. I am pleased to announce that they took care of everything! They replaced the hard drive and the ribbon cable that connects it to the rest of the computer. They also replaced the rubber foot which went missing during the computer's last trip to Texas. So far as I can tell, ...

With our moving date only a week and a half away, things have been pretty busy for us. I've spent the last two weekends trying to get things packed and ready to go. So far, I've packed up all my DJ equipment and records, half of my CDs, all of my toys and puzzles, and my piano music books. That's really hardly anything, to be honest. Ugh. I have a long road ahead. I've also been spending time trying to find things NOT to pack. I've been going through furniture, computer equipment, electronics, games, clothing, etc. and figuring out what I don't use. I have gathered a gigantic pile of stuff that I don't intend to bring with me, so keep your eyes out for a big MOVING SALE post in the next couple of days (hopefully). As if closing on and moving into the condo wasn't enough stuff to worry about, also rapidly approaching is November 1st, when my company transitions from being a lab at the Whitehead Institute to being The Broad Institute at MIT. I will go from being a Whitehead employee ...

Well my dispersed many, it took substantially longer to recover from the start of that journey than I could have imagined. Wondrous and transformative in the best of all possible senses. Only in bits and pieces can it be described at all. A curious combination of the first week of college and one's first visit to Burning Man.

Rick Klau writes about our Department of Homeland Isolation in response to a thread on Joi Ito's blog. Amen, brother. I sometimes talk with Europeans about their generation-long fight to reduce border controls. They're not sloppy. They realize that border controls are a customer service and visitors are "the customer" as much as the citizens. Failing to take the pain out of the average visitor's experience changes the customs and immigration process from one of "Welcome to our country! Enjoy your stay" to one of suspicion, hostility, and ill will. This is a numbers game; say one in a thousand people are offending in a material way. Do we need to expose all thousand to a cavity search? Clearly not. So this is about throttling down intrusion and ratcheting up smiles and helpful conduct. Free traders should be all over this, advocating for markedly less painful visitor experiences. Disney and the entire tourism industry should be up in arms. Universities should be launching student ...

Could the Internet be about to lose one of its best bloggers? Let's hope it's just a temporary break in transmission as Chris Locke is one of the sharpest observers and commentators not to mention entertaining writers on the weblog circuit right now. While some agonise over exactly what a weblog is and whether having one makes you a serious writer and countless thousands of others just get on with it, Rageboy shows that it's pointless to try to define a medium by its message. Someone give the man a job, or buy his books because the blogosphere can't afford to lose such an individual voice.
