Liberal Media, My Ass Despite a Gallup poll claiming that 45 percent of Americans think the media is "too liberal," it's hard to ignore the obvious conservative bias in the mainstream media. Summaries of the poll invariably fail to mention that while 45 percent claimed to regard the media as too liberal, a grand total of 55 percent (that would be the majority) regarded it as just right or too conservative. Further, the percentage of people believing the media is too liberal has decreased among all groups (conservatives, moderates, liberals) for the past two years, whereas the percentage of those believing the media is too conservative has increased. Does this mean that the media does have a liberal bias? Not when you consider that one of the reasons for this misperception is FOX News, the highest rated news channel in America, which consistently tells its viewers that the media has a liberal bias (see O'Reilly's rantings about NPR elsewhere on this blog). Consider a study done by ...

The Advocate reports that the American Civil Liberties Union has filed suit against the Tangipahoa Parish School Board for the third time in nine years. The suit alleges that the school system has endorsed public prayer at Loranger High School football games, thereby violating constitutional restrictions on government-backed religious activities.

The Advocate reports that the Louisiana Judiciary Commission has found that 33rd JDC Judge Joel Davis violated state law and judicial ethics by appointing his father as a public defender in cases heard in his own court. The commission has recommended to the Louisiana Supreme Court that Judge Davis be suspended for 180 days without pay and required to pay the $1,532 in court costs associated with the three-year investigation of his misconduct. The American Press provides a more detailed analysis of the situation.

Our political language has been weakened and watered down so much that few of us can describe what is happening to our society anymore. If I could create a 19th century drawing of the ravishing and dismemberment of the lady Columbia by jackals and hyenas that would not do justice to what is actually happening. The current state of the republic can be compared to a prostrate woman being ravished by hyenas. As each jackal comes in to rip its pound of flesh, the woman writhes and turns, but no matter what she does, she cannot escape from her attackers by herself. Only when a power stronger than the jackals kicks the dogs out of the way, kills some of them for effect, and banishes them back to their evil lairs can the lady Columbia be rescued, comforted, and regain her life and liberty. These images sprang to mind reading the Washington Post story about the 285 men and women who were responsible for raising most of the $49.5 million in campaign money Bush reported collecting this ...

The Advocate reports that the fate of more than 1,200 DNA swabs collected in the hunt for Derrick Lee might be impacted by a United States 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the national law requiring federal convicts to provide blood samples is unconstitutional. The California opinion addresses a central issue before the federal court in Baton Rouge: Under what circumstances can law enforcement authorities collect, maintain and share DNA profiles to solve crimes? Attorneys for Floyd Wagster argue that the "voluntary" samples collected during the hunt for the serial killer were not supported by probable cause and that the federal law "is similar in construction and operation." US District Judge Polozola has given both sides four days to file their analysis of the decision.

If you routinely check the number times your scripts have been downloaded from scriptbuilder.net, this script will help you do it more quickly. It uses Internet Explorer to load the script page (by script ID entered in a dialog box) and parse the page source for the script name and total downloads in about 5 seconds.

Some marketing genius at Planters decided that Nut Poppers was a good name for a snack food. I can't be certain, but I'm pretty sure that Nut Poppers was also part of a hazing ritual on my high school's football team. Now Nut Poppers might be the tastiest snack food on the face of the Earth. But with that name, its time on the shelves of our nation's truck stops, Kwik-E-Marts and supermarkets is limited. So in the interest of preserving a short-lived piece of snack-food history, the Badmouth team leapt into action. I bought some Nut Poppers to conduct what may end up being the only recorded Nut Poppers taste test.

If you develop commercial web applications using PHP, you may want to consider encoding your scripts. We know that the Zend Encoder is the pioneer in this area, afterall the Zend engine is what powers PHP. However, the price of the Zend Encoder is way too expensive for most developers.ionCube offers a PHP Encoder which I understand is really reliable and stable. Most importantly, the pricing on ionCube's products are affordable. The time-expiry feature is really useful if you need to show a client a software you have developed, or evaluation versions, etc. It is also possible to limit script execution to a IP address, server names, or MAC addresses. The standalone encode starts at US$199, but there is also an online encoder which can encode your PHP scripts for less than a dollar, depending on the complexity of the scripts.

Version 0.5 of my PDC Session Browser is ready to roll! This started off for me as a way to learn how to do a few specific new things for a current project and to get ramped to attend the (Now sold out!) Microsoft Professional Developers Conference in LA. In order to get the most from the conference, I’ve been working hard to increase what I know going in so that I can build upon it and do even more with what I’ll see. I think that this is an excellent time to be a Windows developer, we great opportunities for lead in.<img width="0" height="0" src="http://www.robzelt.com/blog/aggbug.ashx?id=9cfe2b28-253d-428a-9e02-eda9692395cc">

Nothing like satisfied users... Blaine Buxton writes about Seaside: To say that I am amazed is putting it mildly. What I did today would have taken me hundereds of lines of Java/Struts code (not to mention all of the damn config files I would have had to change) instead it only took a few lines of Smalltalk. And: I'm completely sold on continuation web frameworks now.... the code is more concise and makes more sense. Glad you like it, Blaine.

Don Imus & Al Franken: Recovery Advice for Rush Limbaugh By JOHN MAINELLI October 14, 2003 -- DON Imus showed Rush Limbaugh no mercy yesterday, even though Imus himself was off the air several times during the 1970s and '80s because of cocaine and alcohol addiction. "Rush is a fat, pill-popping loser and an undisciplined slob who was turning his maid into a drug pusher, and she's the one who's gonna go to prison, and - as soon as he gets caught - he starts whining," Imus ranted yesterday on his WFAN wake- up show. "He's going to rehab because he can't get any more pills and he's gonna go to prison," Imus said. Limbaugh stunned his radio audience last Friday by announcing that he's leaving the air for 30 days to battle an addiction to prescription pain killers following reports that his maid had sold him massive amounts of black-market pills over a four-year period. "Suck it up, fatso, and stop taking 100 pills a day or whatever . . . and employ some discipline in your life," Imus ...

It blows my mind just how childish people can be. Why can we not be happy for folks? Why is it essential to ruin their good time just because we feel left out? Isn't that petty jealousy? It boils down to one thing. Selfishness. Come on folks, can we see some more class acts? I know you are out there!
