It's almost mid October. I wonder where the time has gone. The semester is drawing to an end and I realize that I've spent much more time on Debian than on uni. I think I basically treat Debian as a full-time job and uni as a part-time job. I suppose that explains why I'm busy all the time. ;-)There were some interesting events connected to Debian recently. A few days ago, I got up and found a nice message in my DPL mail folder informing me that Debian has won the 2003 Linux Journal Readers' Choice Award as the favourite distribution. I also managed to get James to announce how New Maintainer rejections would happen and to actually get some done. It was really time this happened. I also chased more inactive maintainers. It's amazing (and depressing) how many inactive developers there are in Debian. However, I'm actually more annoyed by those developers who are basically inactive but don't think they are. Unfortunately, they are not up to date with what's going on at all and don't ...

Well, Zonkboard has decided to become a pay-only service. Not that I really care or anything, not a lot of people were using it on my site. But I don't think they realize that nobody's going to pay for that...

Bush Campaigns on Our Dollar Bush and company are using our tax dollars to fund a new public relations offensive meant to prop up his sagging poll numbers. Instead of working to defend our nation, they are working to defend Bush from an as yet unnamed democratic rival in 2004. Instead of admitting to mistakes in the Iraq war plan, they're working to convince Americans that Bush never makes mistakes. Meanwhile, five US soldiers have been killed in Iraq this week and several injured. The Pentagon in the past has called such deaths "militarily insignificant," something Brit Hume of FOX News suggested when he falsely claimed a soldier had a greater chance of dying in California than Iraq. He pointed out that 6.6 people are murdered daily in California versus 1.7 troops in Iraq, but neglected to consider that 150,000 troops constitute a far smaller population than the 34.5 million Californians, giving a US soldier in Iraq a 46-time greater chance of being killed each day. Claiming that ...

I stand alone in an elevator, descending. All at once the elevator lurches and starts dropping precipitously. A terrible roar erupts as concrete rips violently against steel; the metal and wood-panelled sides of the elevator ripple, rend, and then scrape off leaving me in a concrete box, still descending, now amidst rushing whispers of silence. Then the walls begin to move in. Fear. Fear. Fear. Fear. Surrounded in concrete, still falling, walls steadily closing in—abruptly I recognize my imminent death. Fear evaporates. Instead, an exasperated frustration recedes into irritation and then gives way to indescribable disappointment. Moments before the encroaching concrete crushes me, I open my eyes. I lay in bed, heart pounding, sweating profusely. In that instant I know I had been dreaming. In the next instant, I close my eyes again—a blink in reverse—reenter the dream. And die. I sleep soundly for the rest of the night....

It seems I have a nemesis. They wonder if I have "guts". They just left this as a comment in my journal on a totally unrelated topic. They still need a sedative if you ask me, but I'll ask you, the intrepid reader, what you think instead. Am I the unhealthy one to be happy and content and well adjusted in my own little world living with a nicer guy than Monique has apparently ever met, which is an unfortunate thing for her but not for me, or is she the unhealthy one? It rather seems unhealthy to me to be so insecure that the private life and personal ideas of strangers terrify you into snarling like a rabid dog backed into a corner. I would say what I think, but my judgment is suspect. She would not listen to it.I am just a "little girl" so I'll defer that judgment to you. What do you think? Monique would like to know, but please, no mention of kids. I do have an adult Web site and perhaps Monique isn't educated enough to be aware of the good laws of the United States of America, ...

The past few weeks have been really good and yesterday was really, really good: My TOEFL scores were decent. Managed to convince Krunal that the TOEFL is not very important (he was whining all the while about his scores). Vinod won a web-designing contest. Spoke to Deepa for some time; that was nice. My CV looks fine despite the not-so-good academics. Managed to find the Monaco font for PC. Managed to find a simple sed script to convert HTML files to LaTeX; I need it to convert my CV, which is in HTML, to DVI and I'm not interested in writing the TeX code from scratch. The script is pretty dated and will need lot of work around to work with the sort of HTML pages you would find today; I guess I should be able to code it. TBL actually wrote the script in a reply in a public WWW forum!!...but it was way back in '92...understandable, eh? Most importantly, the realization that everything on my part for the admissions are almost done. All in all, I feel good.

Eric Meyer's comment Friday about Microsoft's next OS, Longhorn, may have actually been a little generous: (Yes, I can count: Microsoft's Longhorn launch date of 2005 says to me it'll actually launch in 2006. I'm just drawing a historical inference here.) Today Mary Jo Foley reported in her Microsoft Watch weblog: It's Official: No Longhorn Until 2006, by Mary Jo Foley, October 11, 2003. The obligatory "I'm being Slashdotted" post. Server CPU and memory are doing fine, bandwidth is a bit of a problem. Adjusted the stylesheet a little to compensate, saves 20KB per visitor. Network statistics indicate the biggest peak is over, anyway.. so slowly lag will dissapear and the site will speed up again.
