I read an article about how “lame” Saturday Night Live is on MSNBC. And thank the lord the word is out. SNL used to be good around the early 90’s. Yet most of their “stars” are dead or retired. I...

Since then I'm part of the RSS Bandit community I usually read my (mostly geeky) news feeds in a half hour at morning. So I was happy finding the <a href="http://dwlt.net/tapestry/dilbert.rdf">Dilbert feed</a> that makes me also smile.

For more than a decade Jay Rosen has been a frustrated advocate of people-first, bottom-up "public journalism." The premise of his project (and his book, What Are Journalists For?) was that, as an act of civic conscience, major media might abandon the celebrity circus approach to covering, for example, presidential campaigns. The idea was laughed at, left for dead after the 1996 season. Yet now, strangely, he believes we're in sight of real public journalism -- not as a matter of corporate or professional conscience but because: the tools of journalism are being democratized.

Since I last posted something here (looks like this blog business is not for me) a lot of stuff happened in my life: - I left my job on Lexicon Genetics and joined MySQL AB - MySQL AB acquired all rights to Eventum, and we will release an open-source version of it in six months - Some redneck driver hit my car and lied his ass off saying it was somehow my fault - Got my car fixed (they paid for the repairs) - Moved to another apartment so I could get a separate home office - Continued developing new features to Eventum And now we will finally start using Eventum (still in beta) for our support customers....

Given the recent hoo-ha over currency exchange rates (a bit of economics that affects me directly), I've started rereading Paul Krugman's The Accidental Theorist, hoping to get a better handle on the whole issue, which involves, among other things, the US current account deficit, the Bank of Japan's interventions to keep the yen weaker, the question of whether the dollar needs to be weaker (or, really, how soon the dollar should be weaker), and if 80's-style trade protectionism will make a comeback. The Economist devoted much of its recent Survey on the World Economy to this (last week's issue, still at your local library if you're interested), and so did William Pesek in a recent column. Much of this stuff, is, admittedly, over my head, but I know enough to be bothered by some neo-protectionist rhetoric I'm hearing from folks back in the States. Give me some time, I might even be able to articulate my concerns. Eric Gower, author of The Breakaway Japanese Kitchen (which I own a ...

Mark Morford's column in the San Francisco Chronicle captured the essence of Apple's design so well. This is the point. Detail and nuance and texture and a sense of how users actually feel, what makes them smile, what makes the experience worthy and positive and sensual instead of necessary and drab and evil.

I’m not too sure, personally, but first read suggests to me that VeriSign’s notice and press release on the suspension of the Site Finder wildcard address seems, well, arrogant. What is it for everyone else, yes or no? Maybe on second reading later I might well conclude otherwise. Balance wise, the ICANN’s responses in the form of a threat/demand/’request’ and advisory both make fun reading. Ho ho ho. (Now, I wonder if I should still try doing a satirical take on the service?)

DCOracle2 is the Oracle interface module for Python I use most often. It is advertised as "beta", but quite suitable for production use, aside from a few minor rough edges. There are a few others, most notably cx_oracle, but I can't vouch for them. Debugging applications that make use of DCOracle2 can be challenging, as with any database environment, specially in a multi-threaded server context. I have developed a small utility module to aid in development. When it is imported, it will automatically trace all database calls made through DCOracle2, including arguments such as bind variables. More interestingly, it will also automatically run EXPLAIN PLAN on queries taking longer than 2 seconds (by default), to aid in tuning SQL statements. As a side bonus, if run by itself, it provides a (very basic) SQL shell that does offer command-line history and editing, something Oracle hasn't managed to provide in SQL*Plus in almost 30 years :-) This code works with Python 2.2 and DCOracle2 ...

Matthias Felleisen announced that the latest CVS for DrScheme allows you to write <a href="http://www.ccs.neu.edu/home/matthias/Tmp/spy.jpg">Python in DrScheme</a>. Nifty. I've noticed that DrScheme has a Java view as well - with Python support, it supports all the languages that I write in Eclipse except Ruby.
