dasBlog rules!
I didn't really post all the content below in five minutes. The kind folks at GotDotNet set me up a blog, and I started with that. Then I discovered that dasBlog is, like, years ahead of the version of BlogX they have on GDN. After seeing the difference I just couldn't stand it. So I installed dasBlog on my own server and copied the stuff over here. A big THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to dasBlog and BlogX.

PDC fever
I was going to explain what parts of Longhorn I work on, but I realized I don't know exactly how to do that without inadvertently preannouncing things. So while I research that problem, I'll stay generic. :-) I haven't participated in a massive developer conference like this since coming to Microsoft. I was involved in a lot of Apple conferences, but as you can see from my bio, that was a while ago. It looks like there will be plenty of opportunities for informal schmoozing with developers, which is certain to be the most educational thing for me. I'm excited to make some personal connections and see what's on the minds of developers. Please stop by and say hello (and suggest some blog topics). I'm the tall one. We're doing a lot of work right now on slide decks, white papers, etc. for the PDC so we can effectively explain all this stuff we've been working on. Preparing for the PDC is interesting. If you've really been keeping customer needs foremost in mind, it should be easy to ...

Bio
So who is this Walter Smith guy? Here's what I wrote the last time somebody asked that: Walter got his B.S. degree from CMU (sure that B.S. would come in handy in the computer industry) and stayed on for grad school. After a year he got a summer job at Apple. That was so much fun he took a "temporary" leave of absence from school, which has now lasted 15 years. Walter spent eight years at Apple working on the ever-morphing Newton project, for which he ended up building the NewtonScript compiler(s), runtime, and object store. After Newton 2.0 he left Apple to look for something new. He soon found himself working for Microsoft, where he has messed around with browser UI and various attempts to improve the Windows application model, helped ship three versions of MSN Explorer, and is currently an architect on the Windows Client User Experience (aka Shell) team. Walter enjoys long walks in the rain between buildings 9 and 35, believes K&R had the brace style right to begin with, and ...

Testing 1 2 3...
The PDC is approaching and it seems like time to start a blog! Most of the things I work on are new in Longhorn and I haven't been able to talk about them publicly, so the idea of having a blog seemed like a good way to be very frustrated. After next month's big coming-out party for Longhorn, though, I hope to have some interesting stuff to say. Since I'm not totally sure I understand how this posting UI works, let's leave it at that for this post. :-)

HALO PC
Halo PC came out yesterday... It's the same game as the XBox version... But it does have the online multi-player, with 5 new FRIGGIN HUGE multi-player maps. Oh and the Fuel Rod (the HUGE gun that the Hunters had in the XBox version that you couldn't get), also it has the flame thrower and this one can actually cause damage! The flame thrower was meant to be in the XBox version but due to memory problems (lots of burnt walls...

Another Nobel laureate?
If Alan MacDiarmid for chemistry wasn’t enough, it would appear the people behind the literary incarnation of the Nobel Prize awards are wanting to give out (or, well, are tipped to, anyway) an award to Janet Frame. A good thing, methinks. (If we ignore that I’ve never knowingly read an actual piece by her yet, however. Erm.) Incidentally, the New Zealand Herald calls her a recluse. What the heck? I don’t think many a recluse get streets named after them in full — there is indeed a Janet Frame Way in at least Upper Hutt. Then again, they obviously did it as a theme, with a Katherine Mansfield Drive slap bang next to it. (Other stuff the paper has is something on shoddy bank client satisfaction — um, I’ve never had a problem with Kiwibank, especially with their nicely odd opening hours, especially at weekends.) Probably the greatest hitch comes from the Australian tall poppy chainsaw especially reserved for New Zealanders at the government-funded ABC who do a beat up story on some ...
