Useless trivia of the Day
The premise for the scifi series Odyssey 5 is that the Earth is destroyed by some mysterious force (maybe aliens) and the only surviving humans are the crew members of an orbiting space shuttle called Odyssey. We then follow the adventures of these five people as they are taken back in time by another mysterious alien on a mission to figure out what went wrong. An interesting premise which could have succeeded as a series if only everything else hadn't been so bad. In the first episode of the series we see Earth explode into a cloud of dust and debris, and the space shuttle just gets shaken about a bit (despite being in orbit only a few hundred kms above the ground). While the crew is frantically trying to figure out what the heck is happening around them, in one shot we see a crescent moon behind the shuttle ... even though Earth does not exist anymore as a solid object to partially block the sunlight from hitting the moon. Christopher Gorman (bottom left) who played the ...

Out of Sight
Back from the shadows again with a newly-restored T-Book. Over the past few weeks, the Mac has slowed down on reboot, 'til I made the mistake of saying yes to an OS upgrade download. Down is the operative word, as my machine just said no on reboot. Fade to black.... 6 days later and $300 lighter, I have my Big Mac back. I could have slid back to an older Powerbook, or booted an old ThinkPad, but instead I lived on my Blackberry, cell phone, and occasional glances at Scripting News, Doc, Udell, brother Dan, and Scoble. Email newsletter briefs kept me caught up with the trades. The break gave me a good chance to ponder the rhythm of the absent RSS and iSight/iChat feeds. No big surprises -- a road trip or a conference week produces much the same effect. But I did learn some important backup lessons -- my Safari bookmarks and my NetNewsWire OPML list were not protected. One was ignorance -- I still don't know where Safari's bookmarks data is stored. The OPML file doesn't appear to ...

Response to SystemServices comments
A few of the people who have e-mailed me about SystemServices have queried me about the existence of runlevels in SystemServices. I should clarify that runlevels are just services, and are only present as a way of providing a bridge between traditional "init" systems and SystemServices. SystemServices will have no inherent concept of runlevels. In the long term it might provide some sort of profile support so you could create a profile called "single_user" or something... but I might even axe that (old sk00l sysadmins may flame me now).

Quick and simple file finder
ASFileFinder excels at the frequent task of searching for a file by its name. It is just over 75KB in size, and runs as a standalone executable -- no DLLs, not even an installation routine. When you run it, it asks you to choose a drive, and then does a quick survey of all the files on that drive. The process takes no more than a few seconds, and then it is ready to search. You then start to type in letters, and it displays the file names which match the entry. If you are looking for "The Year of Living Dangerously", type in "liv" and only those file names containing that string are displayed. (If you have used PowerMarks, you know the power of this simple search technique.) Type in a second entry to narrow it further. Type "liv", then a space, then "dan" and it is likely that only the one desired file will display. Double-click on the file name to open it. Very simple, and much faster than Windows' search tool, particularly if you need to do several different searches of a single ...

Today we rolled out an application to production. While not entirely remarkable in itself, it was quite an achievement. What should have been a trivial rollout (it only has one page) turned out to be a day long debugging session. This application was written primarily by our most senior developer (in terms of length of time programming and pay grade) using Microsoft ASP.NET. While the application seems to perform the business functionality required, it does not do it in a robust way. What I mean is that there was not way for us to diagnose any issues once the application was deployed to production. While this may seem obvious to many; it is simply not something most developers I work with even consider. Even someone with as much experience as the individual I am referring to. The solution to this problem is to first educate and/or mentor the programmers to understand that business features are not the only features which need to be built into an application. Then we need to give ...

The 80s live on in my soul
Listening to 80s music today. Started with a sugar-coated dose of A-Ha (accidentally left "Take on me" on repeat for 30 minutes, it will be stuck in my head for millenia to come). Moved right along to an hour of the incredible Ultravox. I want to be a machine. Then somehow my player landed on Queen's 1980 album "The Game". I finally figured out that it was going to be an 80s day and acquiesed. So now I have a playlist for the rest of the day including some old U2, 80s David Bowie, etc. I will end with a stunning indictment of the period: I have noticed that most of the best albums that are strictly speaking "from the 80s" were released either at very the end or in 1980/81. In other news, reshaped SystemServices around the futile, idealistic goal of having daemons contribute the services instead of silly little shell script wrappers in the future. Ever poked through RH's /etc/init.d/ scripts? Its absurd... they do so much stuff in there that should be included in the bloomin' C ...

Death and School
Johnny Cash. John Ritter. Robert Palmer. Edward Said. Death is visible these days. And but from it comes something else. Hard to say what. Always different. Different people. Different kinds of death. Literal. Metaphorical. Body. Ego. O my bright and risen many, I disappear tomorrow from my usual context and reside <a href="http://www.lacasademaria.org/">among</a> the ghosts of Jesuits for four days, for Monday is my first day of school, for the seemingly uncountably nth time. Much excitement accompanies this. But I believe I shall leave the box at home. So you shall read nowt from me here for a few days (until Wednesday). Then the flood.
