In the midst of the Eolas vs. Microsoft madness, Todd Dominey comes through with a shining light. Eolas: Donate the Money. A lot of people are up in a huff about the entire situation — and it’s a doozie, to be sure — but it’s great to see someone taking the proactive stance. Make suggestions. Make a difference. I’m not sure if Mike Doyle reads Todd’s weblog on a regular basis, but I hope he does. I hope he reads the suggestion and takes it to heart. Community-focused action from a major capitalist player? What a revolution!

Well, now. Um. For my Blosxom installation, I still need to get a good sidebar RSS aggregator. Dang. I still haven’t found one. On the upside, all I need for my release otherwise is the mod_rewrite changes to get the URLs public. One more step! Well, if I decide I can’t live without RSS headlines on the sidebar, anyway. Other news: I’ve done a different categories layout. Mmmmmmm. Yay!

..a mastery of abstraction is the talisman that keeps one ahead of the others struggling so hard bankers, engineers, programmers, accountants study hard and climb effortlessly above and see the absurdity of those trapped below even for those lower down art, tv, are forms of worshipped abstraction and they equate to the delicious distance from life that is possible and consumable modern art hanging in banks and corporate corridors imply this delicious distance but a fusion of abstraction and matter is power in our world beauty and the body banking money and the things it can buy. the physical tv and the episode of buffy .. some american soldiers probably entered iraq and afghanistan with the most delicious of abstraction tech, retinal displays, dancing lasers in their eyes. The distance from reality maintained with guns and information and the ease of localised accurate air strikes. Not easy, but no need any longer for walls to celebrate those abstractions behind. No need for those ...

so we all know i'm obsessed with movie soundtracks, do we? well, if you didn't know before, you know now. well, i ended up buying the Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl soundtrack and let me first say that i think it's a terrific soundtrack. you don't get the "yo ho, yo ho, it's a pirate's life for me" song, but the instrumentals you get are *great*. it's just like watching the movie again! and i guess that's what i like about soundtracks. i like the ones that take me through the movie again, or ones that evoke the feelings i had when watching the movie (ie. sad, nostalgic, wound up, etc). and i guess, to just bash a subject to death, don't like the Hogwart's theme because it doesn't give me any feeling. it's too... generic sounding? too much like elevator music? i dunno. ;_; anyway, so i'm driving in my lil' dark blue 2000 New Beetle (yes, i'm round an' bubbly and so must my car be), crossing Burrard St. bridge which kind of has a bit of an incline in the ...

I spent the afternoon preparing myself psychically to stick my clumsy fingers into my digital camera. I bought the eclipse solution (pure methanol I think), the pec-pads, the spatula (no Wendy's here in london) and finally worked up the nerve to risk destroying my favorite toy. All in the interest of getting rid of a little dust. In the process of figuring out how to clean the camera myself I ran across the best article summing up the joys of owning a DSLR camera. On the plus side, the Boots down the street has a Fuji Frontier 370 now and can make reasonable prints for 15p (about $.22) each, with a second set half price. I am actually finally getting some of the photos I never took the time print and am finding I like having them on paper rather than just in the computer.

Work continues on Python bindings for DBus. It started off as a necessary step to making SystemServices work right... it has taken on a life of its own. At this point it is insanely easy to create new Services (things that export objects over the dbus that people can call methods on). Accessing remote services is even easier, of course. Behold, the awesome beauty that is a DBus Echo service written in Python: import dbus import gtk def Echo(self, echo_message): print ('org.designfu.Echo: received %s' % (echo_message)) return echo_message service = dbus.Service("org.designfu.Echo") object = dbus.Object("/", [ Echo ], service) gtk.main() Now I have to work on making the signal (receiving and transmitting) API better... and finish off some half-assed code at tunelling Python exceptions across the bus (when using Python on both sides).
