GWB Gets a Laugh Out of 9/11 © 2003, John H. Farr The following is from the October issue of Ladies Home Journal. I found it here, courtesy of Michael Moore. Read it with a barf bag handy. Thousands of people dead and they're laughing. I'm speechless. Peggy Noonan (the interviewer): You were separated on September 11th. What was it like when you saw each other again? Laura Bush: Well, we just hugged. I think there was a certain amount of security in being with each other than being apart. George W. Bush: But the day ended on a relatively humorous note. The agents said, "you'll be sleeping downstairs. Washington's still a dangerous place." And I said no, I can't sleep down there, the bed didn't look comfortable. I was really tired, Laura was tired, we like our own bed. We like our own routine. You know, kind of a nester. I knew I had to deal with the issue the next day and provide strength and comfort to the country, and so I needed rest in order to be mentally prepared. So I told ...

Go Daddy Software, Inc. has filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court in Arizona against VeriSign Inc. seeking a temporary restraining order against VeriSign's new Site Finder service, a paid advertising page VeriSign has established on the Internet to which the traffic associated with mistyped, and other, domain names will be directed.Go Daddy's lawsuit claims that VeriSign is misusing its position as the .com and .net domain registry to gain an unfair competitive advantage by intercepting (and profiting from) internet traffic resulting from the scores of invalid domain names that are typed into users' browsers on a daily basis.

Michael Moore Responds to "Wackos" on Bowling for Columbine. "Bowling for Truth", "Moore Lies", "Moore Watch", "Michael Moore Hates America" -- the right wing has been busy in its campaign to discredit filmmaker and author Michael Moore and his film Bowling for Columbine in particular. Last month, I wrote a response to the critique by NRA lawyer David Hardy, which has been the main source for many of the anti-Moore sites. But I was somewhat disappointed by Moore's responses to the criticisms -- Moore has always been Internet-Savvy, but up to this point, there was only a somewhat meager FAQ (the link is now dead; Google cache). In light of his pending book publication in October (Dude, Where's My Country?), Moore is now fighting back against the "Lying Liars" (an Al Franken expression which Moore has borrowed for the title of his response). On his Wacko Attacko page, he answers in detail to the most common criticisms of the film. [kuro5hin.org]

And a part of the blogosphere goes quiet tonight as people get their Emerging Technology 2004 presentation proposals ready. Lots of people are proposing (mamamusings, Dan Brickley, Morten Frederiksen, to name a few), but of course there's only limited time and space available. I'd love to see all the proposals that are sent in to see what everyone thinks is cool enough to show off or talk about. That's the bad part about conferences, is sometimes you just don't know what you missed, or how cool it might have been. I thought about it, and realized that this would be a perfect thing for the Internet Topic Exchange, so I set up a category for it, http://topicexchange.com/t/etconproposals/. You can trackback to that URL or go there and manually do it. There's even an RSS 2.0 feed. If you've submitted an ETCon '04 proposal, get it online and let the world know about it!

Continuation of Cornel West interview.

Cornel West is a modern Emersonian. Come to think of it, Cornel West may just be the contemporary Emerson: an adventurous Christian thinker who keeps extending the question of what it means to be American, to be modern, to be human. West is entertainingly serious and seriously entertaining. He is a moral and political provocateur, a stylist and individualist. To boot, he's a prophet without honor at Harvard, as Emerson was after his notoriously unorthodox Divinity School Address of 1837.

TiVo Therapy Hilarious piece by Joshua Allen in The Morning News on seeking therapy as a result of TiVo. Speaking as someone who has a very active relationship with TiVo and regularly sees a shrink, the article is priceless. This exchange between Joshua and his therapist is deadly funny: It [TiVo] plants this seed in your head. This idea that you can make anything your own, no matter how prepackaged or limited or controlled. Its all just a matter of transferring it quickly and efficiently to a new realm thats completely separate from the source. And youre applying this technique to other aspects of your life. The motions shes making with her pen look less and less like writing. To all aspects, I say, glancing at her over my shoulder. As an example, I taped last weeks session with you. With the TiVo. With a pocket-sized audiocassette recorder. I then hurried home, transferred that recording to my computer, and re-edited it so our conversation went more to my ...

Geek Eye for the Luddites Hilarious geek take-off in Fortune on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy: The experiment: Let loose three tech experts in an average family's home. The result: gizmo nirvana (well, almost). Speaking as a geek (and as a member of that very rare geek subspecies - girl geek), it is much easier to pass on fashion tips than to outfit a home with working tech gear. For three days the Fab Three took over the Burkes' home. And at the end, it was nearing digital nirvana. But, O, Fortuna! It is not so easy being geek.

"I look forward to being able to pontificate about Storage in a more HCI focused context (I'm tired of talking about databases damnit!)" Ha ha ha. This is what I wrote about the talk when it was first setup. Unfortunately I hadn't thought about the fact that IBM Almaden does a bunch of database stuff. If you want to talk technical, the NL is the "most technically risky" aspect, not the database!!! If you're challenging me about the database, you are talking about the wrong technical thing. What we're doing with databases simply isn't that interesting. As my pseudo-host said afterwards... (and said I should have mentioned this more to allay people's fears, and he's probably right): desktops simply don't have that many documents. The database isn't that large. What we're doing with it isn't that exotic. Its going to work! This isn't some giant theoretical hurdle, it just needs decent engineering.

Well, I can never really tell, but I felt like the Almaden talk was a disaster. I didn't establish credibility with the audience, and worse I ended up peppered with technical issues by a sprinkling of developer-types in the room. Defending Storage on a technical level would be hard pressed to do in an hour, and I was giving an HCI talk. I think this would have been ok and ignored by HCI people except that I didn't spend enough time definitively demonstrating the HCI problem and moved on to quickly to airy-fairy things. With an audience that was less concerned (I guess they were legitimately concerned) I think I could have flown the general outline of my talk and it would have been interesting (more interesting than the talk that I should have given that probably would have worked). I tried to do something more sweeping than a nitty gritty "here was the problem we solved" -> "here was the solution we proposed".... because to me the really interesting stuff is not the specific design ...

Some time around one year ago, I joined the American Civil Liberties Union. Yes, the ACLU. I guess I felt, as an American, it was time to do my small part to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States. For the first time in my life, I became a card-carrying member of the ACLU. But this blog entry isn't directly about politics or law or the work that this particular organization does. It's about the customer experience I had in dealing with the ACLU. It all started when I joined through the signup form on their website . . .

It's time to get back to this one: The President Of the Untied States Lied about the events of 9/11. It is documented. It is indisputable. It has never been questioned in the mainstream press. Why not? There is a clear and present Lie. There is a coherent examination of this right here. Have a gander. And I'll add one of my own: how come if the last plane was, as reported, drove into the ground by civilian heros with cell phones that worked in the sky...then, um, how come the wreckage was spread over 2,000 square miles: that's a pretty big dispersal pattern for a ground impact, even for a heavy plane with full tanks of Jp-2...
