Spatial Relations is Important
Good spatial relations skills are important, and I experienced two great real world examples of this recently. The first was when my pregnant wife had her 20-week ultrasound scan. The ultrasound operator had to synthesize a mental model of the baby from the 2D images on the screen and the position and orientation of the transducer with relation to my wife's womb. It didn't help that the baby was wiggling around a lot! A slightly less stirring example was when I visited the grocery store the other night to get root beer float supplies for my aforementioned pregnant wife. There were two store workers trying to maneuver a pallet of ice out the front door. The pallet was about the same width as the door, but it wasn't perpendicular to the door and it wouldn't fit through. They kept trying, though. I counted myself lucky the two were just moving ice and not locating the organs of my unborn son.

That’s it.
Well, I think I shall indeed replace the phpWebLog diary with this Blosxom one. Okie, so this one still dynamically renders (a sore point of mine), but at least it’s faster. That’s the good thing for me. Now, with some luck, I will have a place to store school notes.

If I take this job, can I bring this Athlon 64 box home?
In my previous post, I mentioned the chassis that AMD chose for its Athlon FX-51 reference machines. A couple of readers asked for more specifics. The CoolerMaster model is the WaveMaster TAC-T01. Brushed aluminum stem to stern, not a speck of plastic. If only InfoWorld had a centerfold. The WaveMaster's design is meant to reinforce the Athlon FX-51 CPU's appeal to deep-pocketed gamers. But don't write off either the CPU or the WaveMaster chassis as teen accessories. The FX-51 is actually an Opteron 100-series processor, with none of the trade-offs in cache size or bus speed found in other Athlon 64 desktop CPUs. The chassis is roomy and, as you might expect, well cooled. Load an FX-51 machine up with RAM, toss in a couple of 10,000 RPM Serial ATA drives, bolt in a pair of redundant power supplies, and by my lights, you've got a high performance desktop. Casting my mind back to my suit-and-tie days, my first thought on seeing this system was "front office candy." Visible technical ...

Mapping Knowledge-Making Efforts
Summary: What does it take for kloggers to collaborate on long term work? A suggestion. Picture a map of a certain area of cognitive space. An area might be major category: universal knowledge making first sub: qualitative processes sub of first sub: quality controls sub of first sub: dissemination sub of first sub: collaboration and so on. Now picture that, say, Wikipedia, took on not just knowledge recording (sorry if this seems an overgeneralization) but knowledge making. And had groups of people sign up for knowledge-making efforts in each area of their general knowledge map. Those groups research and argue and construct, online, naturally, until they produce a set of research questions. Which are publicly disseminated and , because its Wikipedia, commented on. Add a self assessment process that has each research group giving ratings to each of their pursuits and subpursuits. Now make a visual map of the cognitive space and put colored lights based on the rating of progress. ...

Character and Principles
I don't think think anybody is interesting until they've had the shit kicked out of them -- Jim Carey This quote has been bouncing around my head for a month since I heard it on a doco about Jim Carey. It says something about a persons character. Can I go through nasty times and retain my principles. How will life's disasters shape my character. Well losing a million bucks at 27 can be character forming. I decided to do the right thing by people whenever I can. I point out when I get too much change from a checkout operator. I also paid holiday leave loading for an employee who quit (that is not an obligation in NSW at the moment). But that ...
