I have had the opportunity to use a few technologies for mixing and matching programs written in different programming languages in the last month: CORBA, SOAP, and the simple XML over HTTP (i.e., REST like RPC). Sure, it is a hassle using RPC compared to building large monolithic applications, but I find that not only are different programming languages best for some tasks, but often key utility libraries are available only for some languages. While I really like CORBA, and I have CORBA support in Java and Smalltalk, other languages which I find useful like Common LISP and Prolog either don't have CORBA support, or it is expensive. Although not a perfect solution, I keep coming back to writing HTTP servers that use URL encoding to specify a "function name" and arguments - usually returning an XML payload makes sense. In principle, SOAP is a better way to go, but XML over HTTP is much easier to implement.

My 3 :-) readers may have noticed that the main RSS file and the home page didn't update yesterday even though the page for September 15 updated right away. This happened because on Sunday night I added the TipJar and told Radio to publish the entire site. Either I need a faster machine or a faster Internet connection or both because it didn't finish upstreaming my 5000 posts until 3a.m. this morning!

The linked article seems well balanced and makes a lot of sense to me. I think that Haaretz is one of the better sourrces of news in Israel - and this article reinforces that opinion. There is a large minority of Israelis who strongly disagree with the actions of the right wing government - this article reflects this rational opinion.

Ogottogottogottogott!

With all the visibility on the security holes in Microsoft's products, one underlying problem seems to always get missed in the discussions. I still believe that it's possible to have a fully secure system running all Microsoft products. That's a bold statement coming from me today because I heard the most amazing story. Chad, one my best developers, hadn't turned on his computer at home for a few weeks as he was doing some remodeling. So, he turns on the computer intending to go immediately to Windows Update and apply the latest patches. But.... the rpc faeries were lying in wait for him. No problem, stop the rpc service. Hmmm, no stop button. Aha, take it off the network. Hmmm, hard to get updates like that. I think I may finally able to convince him of the wonders of a hardware based firewall ;-) OK, so the rpc vulnerability was just nasty, and that was the first time. But most of these vulnerabilites are happening on client workstations. The vulnerabilites are in Outlook, IE, ...

The NOAA National Hurricane Center in Miami, Fla., reports that at 2 p.m. EDT the center of Hurricane Isabel was located about 595 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. Isabel is moving toward the north-northwest near 7 mph, and this motion is expected to continue for the next 24 hours. Maximum sustained winds are near 105 mph with higher gusts, which makes Isabel a Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. While some further weakening is possible Tuesday, conditions could become favorable for re-strengthening prior to landfall.
