MDA? No way.
Rickard writes about MDA here. Basically I have the same objections against MDA. The logic has to be stored somewhere and UML might not be the best representation of logic. MDA will work for a small number of applications (e-Commerece comes to mind and other simple workflow applications), but most applications can't be done with MDA. Leaky Abstractions will creep out of the tool and bite you in your ass.

24-hour days: Too Choppy
I just can't be one of those people who always goes to bed at a reasonable hour, wakes up early, and works an eight hour day. Now that I've successfully adopted that routine, I miss those long sessions of sinking in to the particular task a la moment: work assignment, art project, a new recipe. Last night was the first in a while in which I was up most of the night. There is something to be said for long, continuous sessions of work. Not all the time, just some. What would be perfect: to have everyone else on 24-hour day schedules while I can be on 36 or 48 hour shifts. Man am I going to be cranky at work today.

RSS Agility
MySmartChannels feeds may include the full text of items by simply adding a few parameters to the command line. MySmartChannels includes new capabilities in its RSS feeds that allow you to get the complete description content of channel items. For example, this Weblog is available as a full-bodied feed at this address. http://myst-technology.com/mysmartchannels/rss/214?model=rss/std&description=full This makes it possible to subscribe to a feed with something like NewsGator (that also persists the content in Outlook or Exchange folders). The result is a useful way to read the entire item offline on a notebook and it provides a natural (real-time) backup system for the channel. MySmartChannels also provides additional flexibility with these new optional parameters: description=none|summary|full (default=summary) channelDescription=none|summary|full (default=value of 'description' parameter) itemDescription=none|summary|full (default=value of 'description' parameter) ...

Ja Vote, Swedish Pizza
The good side of a bad result Can't know for sure, especially amatuer economists, but I'd think the Nej vote on Swedish Euro adoption would mean a long term hit to the Swedish economy. And a decline in the value in the krona. Which is actually all just fine with me, since then Swedish pizza will be cheaper. The greatest secret of Scandinavia is the high quality of Swedish pizza. Arguably the best in the world. Pizza shops, with the inevitable name of Mamma Mia, usually staffed by immigrants from Turkey, Jordan. If I relocated from the Middle East to the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs flow, definitely the place to hang out is around a pizza oven. And they're the best, thin crust, some unidentified key combination of flours and cheese. The best topping is Kebab, with saus, though Taco is also good.

Orthography and the human brain in general
Just got this by email: Aoccdrnig to a rscheearch at an Elingsh uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoetnt tihng is taht frist and lsat ltteer is at the rghit pclae. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae we do not raed ervey lteter by it slef but the wrod as a wlohe. I don't know if this really was a university project, but for sure it is amazing what the human brain is able to do. And it does it even if we don't realize it! We create a tiny interface for communication using only 26 characters, and the brain remembers thousands of whole words instead. And why? Because our brain is fast. Our brain's strength is not number crunching through complex algorithms, it's just speed. Another example is face recognition: People are searching for technical solutions for visually recognizing persons in a way a human would do it. They had invented systems that vectorize faces to get only 36 bytes ...

Laszlo Blogroll
Marc points to a very very cool little widget, a richapp blogroll built using Laszlo and OPML. Check out the right hand side of Sarah Allen's Weblog. Marc introduced me and another Marc to Laszlo last year. Apps are built using a combination of javascript and XML, and delievered in Flash. My only criticism, is the dependence on the Laszlo Presentation Server. Lots of developers won't want to deploy the full server, requiring Apache Tomcat. How about a stand-alone utility, to compile SWF from Laszlo script?

Brighton is the English Santa Cruz Hippie era die hards, beach town, pier and coastal amusement park, university on the hill. In one way, Brighton is more Santa Cruz than Santa Cruz.
